Description
This is my entry to 's Months Theme "Fantasy Challenge 3: Fairy Tale Intrepretations"It said to pick a fairy tale, so I picked "Little Mermaid". Yea, couldn't pick something else right, 'ey this was my favorite when I was a kid- the original & disney.
When I 1st read the original, I got it as a Easter presnt for my Aunt & late Uncle. It was a big book of fairy tales- it had pictures ^o^, well when I was a kid, I did not like being read to...so I looked at the illustration.
I pretty much got the story, & was upset by the ending. She didn't get the guy...unlike the disney version- yep, paint a pretty picture of the original story.
When I saw this contest a few weeks ago, I instantly picked "The Little Mermaid"by: Hans Christian Andersen. I have several different books with the story in it, so I read it again.
When I was finished, I ask my Mom "Why didn't anyone save her?" She said "Because no one cares."
Now, that hit a chord. I kinda remebered from when I was little, that I asked the question to myself & had no answer.
In diferent versions, the little mermaid was with the prince for awhile or a short time. Well, during that time wouldn't someone one grow to love her...anybody....
I was just going to have her jump off the boat, but I kept seeing the kid grabbing her before she went over. The boy- yes its a boy XD, is someone who worked in the castle, or the poorly dressed 14-year-old younger brother of the Prince.
Can you see him, in the background of the story, standing there while she walks around his brother's shadow. Couldn't you see him falling for her...even if she doesn't realize that he's there, he is.
While his brother won't shut up about the wrong chick...while the one is standing next to him. Btw, he was invited to go on the party boat- I guess he lucked out, huh?
I can see him depressed because she's depressed that his brother is with the "princess that saved him". Not getting a wink of sleep because he wants to be with her, not being able to bring himself up to her to tell her how he feels.
Now, being on that boat that late at night, you expect him too some things that no one else knows about. What if he sees her sisters give her the knife...to kill his brother to return being a mermaid. O.O Yep, thats what his expression is.
HHe waits to see what she does...sees her come out of the honeymoon suite...smiling. He looks at her hands to see no blood, no screams from his sister-in-law...the little mermaid steps onto the outer step thing on the side of the boat...about to jump.
"Wait!!" he runs over grabbing her arm.
Stopping her, & you can hear him declaring the words she wanted his brother to say...she looks at him & leans into his face &...then Dawn comes.
I don't know what happens after that point...its up to you. ;D
I know that there are wings on him...they were not supposed to be there. I added them because I wanted to >:^P
The thing I have to mention is that....You might be able to be with the one you love the most, but there just might be someone who loves you for you that you might not know about.
Btw, I think he is 14...maybe 15...I don't know.
All I own is the prince's brother/his part of the story & the artwork itself.
I hope you guys enjoyed this as much as I did, & I might write the Brother's side of the story one day...maybe.
Thanks for viewing, & wish me luck, & please leave a comment because its good waves to you.
Edit-
I'm not so good at backgrounds & the boat is...I not a big fan of it. I tried my best on it & my scanner was being wierd, so I don't know...

Hans Christian Andersen wasn't too overly fond of happy endings, due to the fact he didn't get any himself. All of the people he loved rejected him.

Beautiful drawing. I absolutely adore your ending to the story. I read the Hans Christian Anderson version as well, and I ALWAYS wanted the mermaid to have a happy ending. I love this so much!!

(O_O This is from awhile ago...sorry)
Thank you. I really happy that you adored the ending- this was back before I was in a creative writing course, so it really helps.
;3 I'm thinking of drawing this out someday, so I'll give a heads-up to when I do so, okay?

wow. i haave always loved this story, and when i was little i always read the book at the library.it was always sad to me. i think your art is amazing. its very deep. its such a sad story but i understand how she feels. and i think nobody saved her because they couldnt see. people never see when someone is hurting inside especially when they try to hide it. they never notice until its too late. and you feel all alone and deserted, you feel like no one cares or loves you. and to have the person that you love compleately ignore you makes you just want to die. and when she saw how happy he was she couldnt bare the thought of takeing that away from him, so she sacreficed her happiness and her life so he could be happy.(dang now im crying)ok i love the pic! im sorry...

No worries, I was crying when drawing it.
Me2.
Thank you, I wanted to try to give off the right feeling to it, & I kept getting distracted by the story in my head.
Yep, I know that feeling...I guess thats the way I try to be, but...before I left the school I was at all my friends (I'm not able to find their #'s) had their issues & I was trying so hard to keep myself from being consumed by the same feelings I had once that almost took everything away from me.
Its funny, I guess some things can't be seen if you don't know what to look for. ^-^
Sorry, I just went into a moment of things.

The dress was going to be something normal to that era, but I thought "What hell!!" I went with something I had in meh head. :lalala:
It's pretty good- whole lot of symbolism in it, & it gives ya something when you read it.
