Description
I got a friend of mine to model for me recently. The shots turned out rather well I think.I really have to give props to the model, Kazz, for pulling this off. She's intensely claustrophobic, and nearly had a panic attack while doing these photos. You should have seen the look of relief on her face when she ripped that mask off. Also, she recently broke her nose so send her some love!
Funny thing about the mask, I bought it over a year ago for a shoot but the model skipped out on me, and pretty much everyone.

I tend to agree with corpseyouup on this one. The model is alright, the idea is a good one, but yeah, it's been over-done, and I've seen it done to a much better degree technically. It's a good shot for spawnofbill to expand his experience and portfolio with, however, so I am glad he was able to do the shoot. Also, I think no matter how good a photographer is or how many deviations he has, they will never all be stellar.

i honestly disagree with what everyone is saying, why does a DD have to special? why does a DD have to be amazing? why cant we take interest in the simple things? as well as the great?, makes no sense to me
but still this piece is quite good to me, i have always loved gas masks, and the model you found is quite stunning, the overall feel of the photo is great, it leaves a sense of fear, with a small sense of paranoia, a great photo and a great use of white space. your DD is well deserved my friend, you put work into something you love and that's all you needed

Why... Thank you!

I agree with numerous other posts. I think the complexity the nominator sees is self-ascribed and, to some extent, kinda "full of it." I think this piece is nothing special, and definitely nothing new or powerful. I honestly and respectfully disagree with the DD nom.

this one would have been better if u used a guy than a woman model... I dunno.. but something connects men and gas masks in my mind..
that doesn't mean I don't like this. the lighting and the pose in ur piece is so perfect
(^_^)

I think you make a valid point about men being more connected with gas masks. More the reason for it being a woman is to enhance the vulnerability factor already implied with the nudity. While of course, women are not incapable of self defense, it is the implication that the womb that creates and carries us, that shields us and nurtures us, is, in fact, very fragile. I'd definitely like to see another photo using a male model in the same place.

the symmetry and emphasis is good, but its lacking something.
shes too clean. the whole image is too clean. A truely good picture is one you can spend a good 20 minutes looking at.
with one took my glance for 20 seconds. its too simple. its just missing something
perhaps the use of textures would improve? <3

There's actually a version I did in my photo class using a paper negative technique that gives the photo much more texture overall. I'll have to scan that print in tomorrow and upload it.

i like gas mask! i have some picture with the same subject in my gallery and so i always look for similar on DA. don't pay attention to bad comments that people can say about this composition. this is not like the other and you deserve this DD
good luck!

I just can't help it... I see a gas mask and all I can think of is Doctor Who. "Are you my mummy?"
Alright, got that out of my system.
Her eyes tell a mysterious story... she looks so scared. Why? Is she afraid of germs? Is that why she's so frightened even in such a sterile environment with a gas mask?

in actuality, I am claustrophobic, so after awhile in the mask, I'd started to have a panic attack and was, in this shot, actually moments from ripping the stupid thing off my face.
~spawnofbill and I both had our own interpretations. You can find his above int he comment thread, and mine is in the comments area of my DevID.

yeah, honestly, i don't think this photo is all that great. personally, i think it just reeks of pretense. as was said, the usage of the gas mask has become cliche, and i fail to see how it really serves a purpose in this particular picture. probably the worst is that the nudity in the photo just seems like a cheap ploy to get your attention. i've seen a million photos like this and there is nothing that grabs me about it.
