Description
Watercolor like render using DAZ studio to see if it could be done. I look at the poser shaders for watercolors and sketches sometime and go ... siiiigggh... it's too bad the shaders aren't interchangeable. While staring at the promo images I realized the way the colors blended were kind of like how DAZ's visual style shader works. So this is how you do it.
Using the Visual Style Shaders.
Find seamless watercolor textures. You want more than a single example of each color. You want various colors; several blues, skin shades, browns, etc.
Set up the shader dialogue like this, using the dress as my example:
Shading start: .3
Shading end: .6
Diffuse-Light: Basic blue watercolor tile, shade of choice
Diffuse-Dark: A darker color blue watercolor tile or the original tile with a soft blue color over it to darken it a little
speculate through opacity on
outline start: .1
Outline end: .35
Outline dark: Here I used a grey watercolor tile that I increased th contrast to with a light grey color to soften and darken it
Outline light: white or a very light version of your diffuse watercolor tile.
occlusion dark: another darker watercolor tile set up similar to your diffuse-dark but it's better if you don't have the shades quite exact
occlusion light: like your diffuse light but maybe slightly darker. But only slightly.
specular glossiness: .2 on skin I might increase it.
specular strength: 1 with the contrasted watercolor tile as the strength map. On skin I may lower it to .6 or .8
speculat sharpness: .65 - on skin i might soften it. Maybe.
specular color: for the dress I have an extremely light blue watercolor tile chosen.
And that's it. Easy peasy.

Thank you! I'd probably never get a tutorial out about this one...
It really was that easy. I use the Noir - and click on the outline for my work and then just add some random watercolor texture into the Diffuse Color and play around with it until I get the desired effect.
It's better the way you did it, because I still have no idea what I did to do what I did, but it took hours to do in the end... (I should take notes, but I'm so disorganized).
This render looks awesome. Like me - I also tried the Pass Shaders in DAZ, just to check (hey, they were $5 and I have Poser 8) <-- of which, they work in neither.
Anyhow, I'm glad someone broke it down. I really didn't know what I had done, I'm still new at DAZ and 3D (my 1 year anniversary in June of actually using DAZ itself).

I think yours look better, to be honest. I hope you remember how because I tried to replicate what you did and it looked terrible!

No, it doesn't. You're being too hard on yourself. The colors are light and watery on your character, just like the pass shaders example in RuntimeDNA.
Did you know, that you can also texture your shading below the diffuse color area as well? I just tried that today with interesting (but not 'wow' results).
You probably already knew that, but I just discovered it.
I play around with a whole bunch of the sliders in the shader patameters tab, and render the same picture at least twenty times before I get the right results.
I also recommend downloading any watercolor textures, not just seamless. I used a few free textures from (and I've also purchased his premium packs as well.) They are all high res and large, so they yield beautiful results... Not sure if they're optimal for renders at that size, but I stuff them into the diffuse colors tab without scaling them down anyway.
For most of the effects on the watercolor, I used the Noir from PWToon, and then checked ON the outer outline using a slightly darker color than the one being used in the render, but never black unless you're using black as the base.
for cool colors, I stayed with the original purple Noir, gives than added a cool texture (or grey or neutral), for warm colors, I changed the purple noir to a salmon color, and placed either a pastel watercolor texture or neutral near-white watercolor with light tans or light rose and yellows.
Its kind of of like applying makeup - it doesn't need to be specific with matching blues to blues - get experimental, add a purple texture to a blue diffuse color base, or a green and teal texture to your purple base ... Add an orange and yellow texture to your red, and neutral can be added to everything.
You can even adjust your hues in Photoshop, and experiment until you get what seems correct.
It seems like a lot of work, but I think that's how the PASS shader probably work too. There is a huge readme PDF included (I never read) and it seems complex, but I think this person did exactly the same thing that you and I have been doing to get the water color effect.
take the standard shaders from DAZ (poser for PASS), use the toon one - tweak everything and add textures then, repackage those textures combined with the shaders and use.
In fact, I wouldn't doubt that you could get an artistic effect of any kind of media simply by shoving a texture made from that specific media into either the visual style shaders or PWToon diffuse color areas.
I prefer PWToon, simply because the visual style shaders sometimes remove themselves after "X" amount of renders and I have to reapply them manually again, especially the hair and skin ones - after five or six redos, I suddenly get a blank model with no,colors and textures. The PWToon shaders are very sturdy, so they always render without losing the script information like visual style shaders sometimes do...
Also, go with a cell shaded, and not a soft shaded for the watercolor texture FX (I always use thin). You can tweak the sharpness and such from there to soften shadows or make them more pronounced. It just works better...
OH YEAH! And always, always turn OFF the inner lines when using PWToon. The inner lines are aliased and look jagged and ugly, so if you want a soft anime-like render with watercolor specific qualities, turn that button off for everything. I never use it.
Sorry this is a long reply, but I'm just telling you what I remember doing in the end. I've purchased some amazing textures here on DA from resource artists, and those people will say if they want credit when using their resources or not, but some textures can be very beautiful here...
i think final" solution to the look is the randomness of the texture. Don't go for seamless, unless you're looking to make a large flat zone of watercolor shaded area. With skin, hair, clothing... Go for random. For textures in my clothing, I used DAZ textured shaders and just converted them over to PWToon NOIR mode, clicked ON outline - and Noir preserves existing texture patterns, but adds only a lavender shader. There are also two more things you can tweak, and I can't remember the name of them, but they show up as dark grey and black in PWToon under the shadow/shader --- change the colors and play around with these too (I think it's rim diffuse or something like that). Change the sliders/levels on them and what not... Keep those two colors dark, but similar to the hue that you're working with in the base. The final results are also dependent on that.
(sorry, have to keep editing this post -- auto correct is changing words on me)
That's about all I can think of...

I did think of using the Noir settings, but didn't really explore very far into them. I'm going to have to experiment further.
I love the watercolor resource! I think that if I were to ever make this into a shader pack for sharecg or something I'd want to make my own watercolors, though, so I don't step on anyone's toes. That's why I simply put out "here's how" cuz... time. Resources.
The biggest thing about it looking watercolory is the ability for the shader to make things look flat. I'm thinking I'm going to experiment with the ACDz toon shaders with it next time I play with this. They definitely render a *lot* flatter than pwtoon or the visual shaders. Plus, they're free and relatively easy to use. You can make the outline shade into the middle, which would be good for a watercolor effect.
The problem with not going seamless with the textures themselves are all the seams in things like a person's arm. If not seamless, then you get this harsh line at th seam, which watercolors don't do.
I noticed the PASS watercolors have seamless texture (yeah I studied a lot of images when working on it) with only an occasional water splatch and a bit of slight texture. They're not overly watercolor-like like in my render. They're bolder and brighter as a result. I dunno if I'd be able to make textures like that.
You know I was inspired to do this by your DA post right? I was really curious if it were possible. But in the end you're the bigger genius.
Autocorrect? So you wrote all of that on your phone?? O_O

I even downloaded the shaders thinking I'd use their material files but ha ha... they.. .kind of have the files packed INTO the shader and not in a folder.

Man... that is a bummer. Thanks a lot for making this. The result(your image) really looks great. I own the Visual Style Shaders so this is definitely something I am going to try out. My sister owns the watercolour shaders but was still looking for something like them for DAZ so when I saw this I just had to tell her! She also owns the Visual Style shader so this technique is great addition to our DAZ Shader collections.

I'm glad it was helpful. I thought about making textures for it, but I'm a little swamped. I hope someone takes the technique and goes with it.

Thanks again for this. It would be nice to see a full watercolour set for DAZ. A lot has been happening lately so who knows. Saw Star today has arrived at DAZ with the Runtime DNA merger.

Yes, I was happy to see Star had made it over although I still prefer to shop at RuntimeDNA. The first thing I noticed was as soon as DAZ announced the merger, the prices at Runtime went up and all of the sales were gone. This kind of made me sad, cuz I'd spend $10 at Runtime every payday. But with DAZ coming in, Runtime will support more DAZ so who knows what will happen.

Mostly buy at DAZ these days - saw something awesome in the sci fi stuff today but RDNA has always had some pretty nice content too. My sis completely had the same experience as you when she saw the price hike - she was putting together a cart of real deals together when the merger was announced. Fingers crossed that the prices will still be in reach. DAZ does some really nice buy this -get X % off sales and also their 60% vendor flash sales are really good. Being on platinum club also is a bonus but it isn't the same as Deep Freeze or Real Deals on RDNA though.

Yeah I have platinum club but... sigh. I'm also worried most of the things I was aiming to get will be taken down permanently. Sometimes I'll get wind of an old product I would love to get, if only it were still available.

A-Frique In reply to spearcarrier [2016-03-21 16:57:16 +0000 UTC]
That's always the fear whenever I hear big news like this too. DAZ though has been a bit good at keeping content around so I am hoping that they would be able to bring the products over. It all depends on the vendors though. DAZ has also been doing well in terms of sales I think and customers so maybe it is incentive for vendors to keep products. A good way to get a feel is to write to RDNA and ask about it - sometimes they don't know how people are being affected since they can't readily get feedback. They mentioned in their announcement of how DAZ Studio users wrote to them about the DAZ releases and how this also opened things up for the merger. I guess the concept of nothing ventured- nothing gained does apply. Recently wrote to DAZ about the Chibibel and Belbel figures (they had actually been taken down) and they put them back up foreseeable future! So maybe you can reach out to them and see how their sitting on things like the older content.

Wait, the bels were down? I'd been eyeballing them for months before I could finally begin buying them. And I never noticed. LOL.
I'm just watching and hoping. The main 3D artist I follow already knows I'm out for her older pieces, but it appears she's going to continue to move on.

Yup. They actually went down. lol. Just checked and they are still in store. It's sad about the artist you're following- well maybe they might be able to still sell you the items you want via paypal (out of a store). It's really sad when 3D content is no longer available some things are just aren't replaced with anything else or even close.

Also add - amyaimei 's conversion of Kururu and Deco to G2F & G3F which are free in case you don't have to your backup list. She got permission from the creators to do the conversion/ geografting. I am always really thankful when I see freebies around on shareCG or here cause the stay around for years.
btw may you tell me which vendor is moving on? I might want some items from them so best to get them now or I too will have to make plans!

Oh, they're not moving on. Littlefox is doing quite well, better even with the new DAZ merger. There's just a lot of old Cookie stuff that's not available anymore is all. But fortunately when it comes to 3D things, there's no lack.
I liked the Kururu graft but prefer the original Kururu, which I've been working on here and there. I also have Poser and although I rarely use it and dunno what I'm doing, it's nice to have things that can go back and forth just in case. I didn't know Deco had been redone for G2 and G3. Nice.
I also like this other model whose name escapes me, but she's noncommercial only which is a little frustrating. I only collect commercial okay things.

Cool. My sis she noticed some Cookie stuff went onto deep freeze after christmas. Got some Cookie toon hairs which are nice- just resize them and I am good to go.. I also only collect commercial use items as well. Don't know when or where I might use them so I always look for the commercial use rights. Non-commercial se is good for renders and entering competitions (like on dA) and such but it's always safer to get commercial use though.

When I make something I also release it so folks can use it. I think it's silly to put an object out there that literally can only be shared and say people can't use it for commercial use. It's not like they're stealing it. I love the Cookie hair. But with the DAZ merger everything is more expensive than I can afford now. Well, I'm exploring ways to make my own so who knows what the future holds.

Yeah, I am slowly looking at what I can model myself - wanted to get back into it. Detailed sets I am buying for what I am working on but hopefully one day I can build my skills and make something nice.I have some modeling skills but I lack an eye for detail. Having to re-install my hexagon in the coming days. Enjoying making MAT poses and texture sets for Chibibel though my sis does most of the work.hehehe. I like rendering a lot. Hair Designer By PhilC on renderosity might be a good way to go for creating hair. PhilC's tools are pretty good. It might work for making toon style hair even real hair. Carrrara also can make some nice hair, sometimes if you are luckly you can get it for $15 if you catch a Carrara sale on DAZ and work the coupon magic!
Sis just let me know about this too - don't know if you own this already but although it is for A3, it has quite a lot the Cookie Hairs at DAZ by lady littlefox. You can grab it for about $10 right now in the sale.

Also she gave me a heads up about ApirlYSH's site which has some of her old hairs (going for around $5 each) and freebies.

And also she just gave me another heads up to Mylochka on ShareCG - who has tons of free hairs!

In case you're wondering - my sis sits like just next to me (behind me) in our office and she has an extensive list and knowledge of where to find 3D content. She loves to share when she gets the chance all the goodies she finds.
Just mentioned Cookie hair to her and this is what she gave me.

These are some great resources. I think I have one or two. Didn't know about the Hair Designer. I gotta take a look.
I can morph in Blender, but modeling from scratch proved to be too intensive for me and my schedule. I'm actually looking into using the new program Memento (which is BETA and free right now) because sculpting in polymur clay I do. And could get the hair just how I want it. I just haven't had time to play with it yet.

Thanks for the heads up on Memento. Bookmarked the link for future reference. You can check out Sculptris for sculpting with clay if you haven't already. It's by the people who make Z-Brush and it is free pixologic.com/sculptris/
