Description
A Hippomyrmice, giant insects used as mounts by the people of the Sun in True History Part 1 (2nd century AD) by Lucian of Samosota.
"The left wing of the enemy, which was commanded by Phaëton himself, consisted of the Hippomyrmices (Horse ants); these are large birds, and resemble our ants, except with regard to size, the largest of them covering two acres; these fight with their horns and were in number about fifty thousand."
The drawing took some style inspiration from the creature designs of Ricardo Delgado.

Oh, this one has nothing to do with Mars this time. This creature is from the Sun and is involved in the war between the Sun and the Moon. It's part of my series on Lucian's True History, rather than the Mars project.
This is actually an old picture, but I added the size comparison today. I thought the scale was important for this creature. I'll be posting two new Solar Fauna drawings today, if you're interested.

Interestingly enough, it wasn't definitively known that the Sun was uninhabitable until fairly recently. In the 1700s, the famous astronomer William Herschel strongly believed people lived there.
I see the people, plants, and creatures of the Sun in my Universe as superpowered beings able to withstand the heat and pressure. Sort of like Superman.
