Description
Dear Potential Investors,Thank you for your interest in our revolutionary Butter Bugs (R)! Butter Bugs (R), developed with state-of-the-art genetic manipulation, represent a fantastic new leap forward in the fields of agriculture, terraforming, and haute cuisine. Inside each Butter Bug (R) is a complex suite of painstakingly designed microorganisms, which allow the Butter Bug (R) to eat any Earth-derived vegetable matter. They then convert this feedstock into healthy (and tasty!) Bug Butter (R), a mild, creamy product that is so nutritionally balanced, it can sustain a human being indefinitely.
Butter Bugs are easy to keep! A single queen will quickly produce a colony of workers as large as their food supply will allow, each worker busily eating your compost and kitchen waste and producing hygienically sealed capsules of Bug Butter (R). Consumers may then harvest and eat the product raw, or can prepare it in any of thousands of ways, from frozen dessert, to soup, to delicious sauces and herb spreads. Please stay tuned for information on flavoring and preparation.
Our Barrayaran customers will also be thrilled to know that our top geneticists and exobiologists and currently working to develop a strain of Butter Bugs (R) that can digest native Barrayaran vegetation and convert it to edible Bug Butter (R) products.
Please find attached our artist's rendering of a worker of the original Butter Bug (R) strain. Though perhaps not as attractive as our later strains, Original Bugs (R) are fast growers and great producers. Never judge a bug by its cover (ha ha)! They are available in standard coloration or, for a limited time, in fetching brown and silver livery, with attractive patterns on their wings reminiscent of the crest of House Vorkosigan. They are sure to be a hit at any party, but please order soon as supplies are diminishing rapidly.
We here at Butter Bugs Inc. thank you for your time, and hope that you have become as fascinated and entranced by these beautiful (and profitable!) creatures as we have. Stay tuned for future updates on deals and new products, and have a Butterific day!
Yours sincerely,
Mark Peter Vorkosigan

Whew
Okay, anyone who had the patience to read through all that Malarky is obviously already a fan of Louis McMaster Bujold's brilliant Vorkosigan Saga. ([link] )
and the book from which these bugs come, A Civil Campaign.
([link] )
A Civil Campaign is a hilarious book about these bugs, the mad scientist who invents them, and the troubles they have being accepted by society. Since the bugs look like "a cross between a cockroach, a termite, and a pustule." Acceptance does not come easily.
And also there's a wedding or something in the book too. I skipped those pages.
Anyway, these bugs were drawn on bristol board and colored in photoshop. I had intended to make them more photo-realistic, but it would have taken a long time and, to be honest, at much higher degrees of realism, these things would be absolutely repulsive. ([link] ) Now imagine that thing much larger with a soft plump abdomen.
By the way, they arch their backs and hiss when stroked. Possibly with affection.

I think they're about the size of your hand. All the characters in the book (who weren't the bugs' creator) thought they were disgusting.
