Description I've finally mapped out the Mars I use for my own art projects, which combines the various versions of Mars seen in Public Domain fiction. This site will probably scale it down so much it'll become completely unreadable. There's a slightly better version here: www.flickr.com/photos/13929567…

First off, I've increased the size of the planet by 3.5 times. Fictional Earth will be similarly scaled up when I finally do that map.

Secondly, instead of putting the 19th century maps on top of each other, which would result in overlapping locations, I put them side by side. This means a Mars with four distinct areas: Oceanic Mars (based on a map by Camille Flammarion), Sea/Canal Mars (based on a map by Giovanni Schiaparelli), desert-like Mars covered in canals (based on a map by Percival Lowell) and finally a small section based on Real Mars.

I've tried to include all the countries, cities and major locations from the Public Domain, but it's possible I forgot a few. I took a bit of creative license with a few locations, such as the Martial Territory (the book Across the Zodiac doesn't mention canals at all and I put it in an area filled with them), just to make things work with each other. I hope this doesn't offend any purists out there.

EDIT: of course, this will be subject to edits as "new" information comes in.

SECOND EDIT: Silly me, I forgot Ptarth on this version. I'll probably be updating this image all day.

Is this version of Mars going through that who "dying Mars trope" or did they fix that? Also is the gravity thing from the Barsoom series still present and if so does it happen in other parts of the planet then the Barsoom parts?

Mars is dying, but it's being kept in check by a central Atmosphere Plant (like in A Princess of Mars). I'm also adding the idea that there are atmosphere booster stations all around, some of which work well (the green area with oceans) and some of which don't work at all (the Airless Wastes, which is the small portion that resembles real Mars).

Are there any ways to make more atmosphere plants or improve the existing ones? Also who are the most powerful countries on Mars and how do they compare to Earth countries?

They're ancient technology built by a long dead race of Martians. They can only be maintained.

The most powerful Martian nations in the present day are the Red Martian city-state of Helium (from the Barsoom series), the Yellow Martian kingdom of Mandal-Uttima (from Journey to Mars), and Soatsera (from Aelita: or the Decline of Mars). The latter is a Communist country and the other two are monarchies. All three have advanced technology such as airships. There are also various outposts of Sarmaks (from War of the Worlds). They are also a powerful force on Mars, but operate with a hive mind, so they're not quite analogous to any Earth country.
