Description Ahh, the age old question. A pissed off plumber and a speedy hedgehog. Who would win in a fight?

I would usually go for speed over strength but that's all Sonic really has aside from the Chaos Emeralds. Mario has many power ups to aid him on his adventures. Fire flowers, a hammer, cat bell and the star to name but a few. So my money would be on Mario to win, imo

Let's look at the facts:

Mario has proven to be VERY strong. He can spin Bowser around like a hammer throw champ, break bricks with his fists and actually KICKED a castle into the background of one of his older games. True, he needs a mushroom to get to his full potential but they didn't call him 'jump man' for nothing as he can jump up to 5 times his own height.

Sonic is obviously VERY fast to the point where he's a literal blur which makes him difficult to hit. If you really piss him off, he can transform into Super Sonic or even Hyper Sonic where he is a force to be reckoned with. While our plumber can breathe underwater (how) Sonic can drown unless you get to an air bubble and that horrifying music come on. Sonic CAN avoid death as long as you have at least one ring whereas Mario will die straight away if he's small so he does have that advantage over the plumber.

These two actually have a lot in common despite looking so different.
They both collect currency rings/coins
They both die if they touch an enemy (if Sonic is out of rings or Mario is small)
They both have an arch nemesis who gets thwarted in every game
And of course, they both have a sidekick

So yeah, I've rambled on long enough, who's gonna take the title?

I really like how you drew this, and how you titled it too. LOL! The light effects and motion effects are nice, and I like the more rugged yet still stylized look you gave the characters. Great job

Thank you!Β  That was the only title that came to mind XD

You're the first person to say they actually like my own style of drawing so thank you for that, too
I never want to take away the elements of what makes a canon character I just add a bit of semi-realism which I love doing. I would never have made Sonic look like the first movie shot we saw of him, that was just horrifying... Β

LOL! I think human teeth look horrifying on anything other than humans, but it’s kind of funny too. I think you have a decent balance here of your own style and canon style, so no worries

They do. Imagine how scary babies would look if they were born with teeth .-.

I told a friend on here a few days ago, when you imitate someone else's drawing style, it's really tricky to find your own because you're so used to drawing how they drew, you know? Like I used to copy Jamie Hewlett's style but I felt I wasn't progressing in my art if everything looked Gorillaz styled.

LOL! So true! It sure would make feeding the baby more difficult. Or maybe easier, if they were born liking steak and potatoes. LOL! XD

True, though copying is a skill unto itself, and one I didn't have when I was younger. It's cool you can copy and be original too. I'm starting to figure out my style, and it seems to be cartoony characters with backgrounds that look more realistic than them. I try to tone down the backgrounds, but that can be the fun part

Breast feeding would be a nightmare XDΒ

I like to try starting with the background first so then I get an idea for lighting and shadows for the characters. I feel much more free when I draw in my own style as there's no set 'rules' you have to follow. Like if I draw 2D Hewlett style and deliberately did his nose wrong, everyone would jump on me about it. Copying a style does get you noticed more but you have to be true to yourself. I draw for pleasure, not to please everyone.

IndeedΒ Β

I start with a basic background, and then add in the characters and furniture. I used to always draw the character first, but in traditional paper and pen (or paint, or markers, etc.) that can be a real pain to work around. Art was my first love, but really writing is where I shine. I draw sometimes, but not nearly as much as you and the other amazing artists on DA. Yours is a real talent, and it’s clear you worked hard to get to this point

That back ground is always a good place to start
I absolutely suck at writing XD The only time I ever really do it is to rpΒ  but I've always been a drawer since I was 2.

Thank you very much, friend

Everyone has their talents, and for some it takes longer than others to find theirs. I liked to draw since I was 6, but I was never great at it. The pictures always served a story, but it took a long time for me to admit that it was because the writing is what I cared about. For my entire adult life however I've been writing, whether it's original content or fan fiction. I take both equally seriously, because I know readers give a lot of their time to a story. You remind me more of a friend I had as a child though, who was basically creating art out of the womb. She could draw, paint, craft, create music, or anything else she wanted artistically. We always thought of her as the next Van Gogh or Monet. Her prefered method is canvas work, but she's not picky about which medium she uses. It's such a cool thing to behold when an artist loves their work so much

That's a lovely compliment, thank you!
It's nice to know that people appreciate something you spent hours doing. I really do admire writers, though. It's like art in that you create something from the mind and put it to paper but in a different way. In both cases, the author and the artist have to 'transport' themselves into a different realm to really 'get into' their work, you know?

MadnessJones In reply to SpellboundEnigma [2020-04-01 11:07:13 +0000 UTC]

That is so true. You have to live in that moment in order to capture it, and that's a hard thing to explain to those who don't do that. On the internet it feels like artists are the norm, but then you meet people IRL and you find out that's not true. Don't get me wrong, I've been very lucky to meet several great artists and creators IRL, but it isn't the norm.Β

SpellboundEnigma In reply to MadnessJones [2020-04-02 12:30:48 +0000 UTC]

It's not the norm, no. We have to go into 'that place' we're trying to create. I don't mean to sound philosophical but to talk to someone who understands that, such as yourself is a nice thing
Usually when I draw, I like to listen to music depending on the subject. If it's a fight, I'll listen to something fast and intense. If it's sad and haunting, I'll always go for the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack.
If might sound daft, but it helps you really feel the mood of the character you're drawing.Β

MadnessJones In reply to SpellboundEnigma [2020-04-02 12:56:23 +0000 UTC]

I understand that. I used to listen to music all the time when I wrote. These days I prefer quiet during the writing phase but for the plotting phase I like to turn on music and walk around acting out the scenes so I get a feel for how it should play out (and what parts to cut). The music really does set the mood, mans certain songs will make me think of certain things I've written. Also, the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack sounds awesome. I never thought of that. I have Batman Returns soundtrack on CD which was also Danny Elfman, but I haven't listened to it in years.Β

It's a beautiful soundtrack, I highly recommend it 'Ice Dance' is so haunting.

Batman Returns, eh? Is that the one with the Riddler in it?

MadnessJones In reply to SpellboundEnigma [2020-04-03 10:09:59 +0000 UTC]

Heck no, that one was directed by Joel Schumacher. Batman Returns was Tim Burton’s sequel time the first Batman movie. It was the one with the Penguin and Catwoman. It had some tone issues, but I love the music and makeup.Β

Yeah. I guess the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack makes me think of that one because both were composed by Danny Elfman at a similar point in his artistic careerΒ Β

Indeed. It's weird to think that he also composed something upbeat and jolly like The Simpsons theme.

MadnessJones In reply to SpellboundEnigma [2020-04-04 11:46:09 +0000 UTC]

I don't think it even took him that long to write The Simpsons theme either. Like, he would labor over the theme and mood of most of his work, but he came up with the beat to The Simpsons on the drive home. LOL! XD

Yeah, that’s a memorable soundtrack. There’s a YouTube user that made parodies of the songs from that movie only for the video game Portal. They’re pretty good
