If I could "just get over" my anxiety or bipolar disorder, don't you think I would have already? They're not doing me any favors. I've had people tell me that I just need to 'get over' my anxiety and Avoidant PD and start dealing with people.Yeah, cool, I'll do that. Except for the whole dehabilitating panic attacks thing and ensuing panic attacks when returning to the situations that caused the first one...
Don't tell people to "get over it" if they have a mental illness. It doesn't work like that.
Should you let it rule your life and use it as an excuse for everything? No. But can you just "get over it" and start living problem-free? Not really.
Besides, do you really think you're the first person who came up with the idea of asking someone to "just get over it"?

Lol. Yes. It IS impossible to just re-wire your brain and get completely rid of the trauma involved in this types of things.

It must be wonderful to have the luxury of 'not thinking about it'. I truly envy those people.

I've learned the luxury, but only through medication..and then people are like "You shouldn't use that as a crutch!" Its not a "crutch" it makes me be like "normal" people and function. You can't imagine how amazing it feels to just not let something bother you. Its like "...yeah the picture's crooked...so what? Let it be crooked!"

See, I think it's unfair that people don't treat mental illness the same as a physical ailment. You wouldn't fault someone with a broken leg from using crutches, but somehow your brain (perhaps the most important organ in your head to worry about being healthy) is thought of differently. I think it shouldn't be trivialized.

Yeah, I heard the 'can't you just get over it?' line countless times in my life. The thing I always think of asking those folks is HOW EXACTLY DO YOU GET OVER IT?!
problem with clinical depression, bipolar, anxiety disorders, and any other mental illness in the book is that they don't need some kind of bad event in your life to affect you. What I mean is that you can feel perfectly horribly depressed for no reason at all, with nothing in your life causing it and nothing to 'get over'. It's just your mood and where your heads at. But people dismiss the medical reasons because it's just too damn hard to wrap their brains around I guess.

I think the one that is most commonly associated with the "get over it" attitude is clinical depression. I had it for years and suffered through those years without treatment because nobody understood. Mental illnesses are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. You can't just get over those.

Anorexia, too.
I know what my problem is but it's a lot more complicated than "oh, I'll just get over all my insecurities and eat a ton of food!"

Ah, it's damned lovely, ain't it, how people treat others?
Disgusting that we still live in a society that thinks mood and personality disorders are simply imagined.

You have bipolar? Woow that must...to put it bluntly, suck. I don't know much about it, just that you have very wild moodswings and rushed and quick thoughts, and some people even hear voices etc...That plus anxiety... :S I hope you wíll get over it in time
But yeah, same thing with depression.
Just cheer up!
Yeah if that was possible (= = )
