Description
at 1 meter in length, this robust dissorophid is among the most unique of it's family. it is believed to be a fully terrestrial amphibian that supported armored scutes along it's body. and just like the synapsids at the time, phatyhystrix supported a large sail that most likely helped the amphibian thermoregulateRelated content

Lots of Permian creatures seemed to follow the sail-back fad.

It seems those spines weren't sails...or crests...or humps...
They were just spines.

Really cool. Did this amphibian live before any (sailed/finned) reptiles. That be cool if it a first.

not really. it coexisted with many sailed back synapsids, but there's no direct evidence suggesting that this particular creature lived before them.

isn't it? i always found a large array of amphibians to be quite adorable. no reason why an extinct dissorophid would be the exception
