I know... and it is getting easier... but its still tough. I still have my 13 yr. old kitty... and my bunny bunny. and 3 other cats... so its not like the house is lonely. lol. But its not the same without Fey's singing.

what a sweet, beautiful bird.
I know how awful the 'sudden pet death' is.

sometimes the hardest to let go.

4-5 years is pretty much max for a keet. So he actually lived long.
thank you.

No, they should live 8-17 years.

"Most of the birds live for only five to ten years" - [link]
He did die younger than most but he was just about 5, at least to when I got him, and he was probably almost a year when I bought him... so
Most of the budgies I've either had or had friends that have had, have only lived 4-6 years.

"In captivity, budgerigars live an average of five to eight years, but are reported to occasionally live to 15 if extremely well cared for."
Where did you get your information?

jeywolf In reply to oatdoe [2006-09-19 20:05:17 +0000 UTC]
From others who have kept them, breeders and pet stores. If properly cared-for and healthy, they should live *at least* 8 years and easily up to 17 years. They key is probably the way they are cared-for, which is not always easy. Diet is a big factor in that. Budgies that have a main diet of seeds (especially seeds with preservatives, namely the evil ethoxyquin) usually don't live long, only 4 or 5 years. But if they have a wide variety with lots of veggies and fruit, and/or pellets, they will live much longer. But you can't force a bird to eat his veggies Also, birds that are around smokers, or things which off-gas chemicals (which you may not even be able to detect) probably won't live long either.

you're right there I take in abused birds, my sister right now has a 'Too that's really had it bad for the past +6 yrs, she's around 7 yrs this year and the vet said it would be best for her to be put down if we can't look after her since 'Toos can get quite demented, but she was a '
et store attraction'
Hate pet stores, zoos, circuses

Aye yeah I wouldn't want a cockatoo. They require way too much attention. Really I don't want any birds they are far too noisy for me, but I"m stuck with the ones I got for now. I do love them, but will not have birds for pets after they die.
