Description These things are used as mounts; they are however normally found in deep burrows underground. They enjoy eating roots mostly but will eat meat if they absolutely have to.

Why "absolutely have to?"
"However, many herbivores will eat eggs and occasionally other animal protein."-digital-desert.com/wildlife/
Plants are generally low in nutrients, so herbivores must browse for long spans of time, consume great quantities of food, and have a long, complex digestive system to absorb the nutrients of their forage. Meat is richer in nutrients, including protein; therefore, carnivores need less food and less complex digestive systems.

If a carcass, eggs, or a tiny, injured animal was right in front of a herbivore, it would probably partake of the opportunity, simply because meat is easier to digest. (a carnivore has trouble digesting plants, but a herbivore should have no trouble digesting meat.)

You stated they "enjoy" eating roots "mostly." Do they eat most of their roots? Do they eat mostly roots? Do they prefer some kinds of roots to others? Do they eat tubers, corms and bulbs as well as true roots?

How big are their burrows? If their burrows are small, they might have trouble maneuvering---their shoulder-spines look stiff, and their limbs do not seem optimally modified for fossorial life.

I think you are looking into how I typed this up way too hard ha ha...not to be mean or anything; I don't put too much thought into these tiny blurbs on my work but I do extensive write ups from time to time.

'Absolutely have to' means it is not to their taste per say. They are sentient beings after all and have the capacity to prefer one thing over the other. They basically eat whatever is around but prefer roots that is all that means. Of course they do have the common sense to be opportunistic.

All of these creatures are on alien planets; the rules of real world animals do not apply but I'll give you this:

Those sorts of roots may or may not exist in Laynair; they just normally feed on what is around their dens, if the food supply runs low they go scavenging and will and can take down large prey as they are mount size, other races ride these guys around.

Their dens are gigantic more in the way of huge constructs than normal 'holes in the ground'. The spikes are ridged but they can flatten down if they need to.

I am in the habit of designing aliens with great scientific detail, which was why I was curious about the minutiae.

I was not aware of their sentience; nothing in their "blurb" suggested they were sentient.

Your clarifications are logical and informative.

I do the same but I hardly ever post them in their entirety. Sometimes I post little snippets in comments to let people in on how they work and such.

Yea I really need to work on typing longer descs lol..

Very good <3 glad I could clear that up.
