Description EDIT: Here is the updated reference for 2016 spiralofvertigo.deviantart.com…

Threw some colors on the ref yaaaay.

Male on the left female on the right. The females have their mammary glands in a little pocket on their chest. BOOB POCKETS.

All of the spines and blades can retract.

Edit: VERY BASIC information added. I need to rewrite this at some point..

More info later~ These guys have been with me for a lonnng time.

Environment: There are many known subspecies of Swifthorn which have developed different characteristics depending on where they reside. They live in large groups of either All Swifthorn; or
mixed in with every other race that resides in Laynair. A very diverse group. Found in both the lawless and the cities they are one of the most common races in Laynair.

Type: Mostly bipedal with the ability to run on all fours; though it is not very common for them to do so unless they are traveling the 'old fashion way'

Ancestor: Archwing

Life span: The average individual may live from 100 to 150 years. Depending on the region and gender. Females tend to live longer.

colors: The colors on the cave swifthorn are very bright like parrot’s feathers. The bright colors come from chemicals in their environment. The illuminated hairs are hollow allowing the bright skin to shine underneath; most do not have fur all over their body however. When out of the cave environment the illumenesence is no longer very visible, therefore these spots react to the area they are currently in. The purpose of the colors is to illuminate in the dark regions of their homeland, and to distinguish authority. The desert variety are earthy colors with pale skin. The tundra subspecies are very pale colored and normally white with few black markings. The aquatics come in a large range of blues and greens. Others have dulled but very diverse markings; the cave and tropical are the brightest.

Markings: Face markings usually consist of stripes, sometimes with a "tear-drop" shape like that of a cheetah. The eye markings on other subspecies are used to block UV rays in harsh desert climates. Patterns have a very wide range but stripes and long thick brighter lines layering over large dark portions are common. Swifthorn of one color are possible but very unlikely.

Diet: The diet of the Swifthorn consists mainly of fish. Local fruits are considered a delicacy; the consumption of other sentient races is highly frowned upon due to the fact that they intermingle with other races often.

Culture: The swifthorns have a habit of stitching iron threads through the ears of individuals. This is used to show army rank. The more lines the individual has, the higher the rank. Other cultural habits include tattooing symbols on the forehead to showing which family one belongs to. Each member of the family must have the same symbol but it may be tilted different ways. Though this practice is now considered 'outdated' some still follow the older ways.
The Swifthorn are very scientific and industrial; and are the maker of many of the weapons and technology around Laynair.
The Swifthorn culture is very diverse as many individuals joined the mixed race cities and are referred to as 'modern Swifthorn'. Some however still live in their home areas.
The city dwelling Swifthorn tend to customize their appearance much more than other races. Docking tails and having horns trimmed down and blades/spikes removed is fairly common. They also have surgeons that specialize in making custom shaped horns using chemicals to sculpt and cause the horns to grow a certain way.

Government: The leader of the government is called the "elder". They are voted in by majority vote and their term usually lasts until death. The "elder"; if they break major laws, will be exiled. Elders may be voted in as early as 25 years old.

Personality: Normally the Swifthorn are very competitive, they love to engage in sport like activities, or just a good one on one fight. Under stress they tend to have a hot temper, but are; most of the time, calm and passive. Traits really depend on the individual.

Body Description: With a layered plate resting over the top of the horns with their very large distinded craniums underneath; they look as if they are wearing their faces as a mask. The horns are normally long and relatively straight on the female they can however be slight curved upward or downward. On the male the horns are either curved and twisted into strange shapes. Usually with crystal like spikes adorning them; the females horns may be made completely out of crystal as well as huge parts of the males horns.Rough feather like protrusions have been reported on some specimens along the shoulder blade or spine. Their hands are very human like with claws, feet are two thick claws with one long dew claw on the side. The tail is long and lizard like at times bare but usually covered with fur. The females normally have the blades close to the middle of the tail, and the males have spikes, normally at the base, and sometimes at the tip or both. Their jaws are best described as crocodile like. With a permanent smile. Their nostrils are near the top of the snout and are very avian like; as is how they walk. Small bone like bumps are near the base of the snout; some subspecies have up to four nostrils. The blades are able to push down and be hidden; some individuals actually have their tails docked or blades removed if they join other societies.

Normal Height: On four legs 4 ft 1' at the withers (base of the shoulder) on two legs (depending on age, sex, and parents) 8 ft and up.

I didn't see anything in your gallery that looked similar to the Swifts what species are you speaking of?

I'm glad you like the anatomy; this is from 2011 though so the body type is a little outdated this is much more accurate now spiralofvertigo.deviantart.com… I need to redo this reference for 2015 probably.

Oh I haven't actually posted any reference sheets yet, I sketched them out. I'm in the process of making a ref sheet right now!
I just meant the body looking similar hehe.

Ah okay, I'll check that out ^^Β

Never seen those before. Dang, those are some big tails, they look heavy!

spiralofvertigo In reply to space-commander [2013-04-07 16:03:31 +0000 UTC]

They are pretty heavy! The Swift are a race that are big on body modifications; which is one reason why the tails are often docked in city regions. Sometimes in half or fully removed. Full removal is much more rare though.

Many of the guards and warrior types however keep their tails and use them in combat.

Interesting species! I'm curious though, why do the female have retractable blades while males don't? Did they evolve it back in their prehistoric stages as a defense against jerks, like a biological concealed taser? I'm curious to know because the man is brimming with (flaunting?) (non retractable?) spikes all over but doesn't appear to have those blades here, while the lady is considerably less pointy; except for her giant tail scythes.

Thank ye <3

Both sexes have retractable blades I probably mistyped something in the desc.
The Swifthorn race has very different gender standards than humans. Males and females are equal in strength and neither are held in higher regard than the other.
All of the spikes on the male can be retracted; both are normally displayed when they are around each other and either hidden away or docked when in cities and around other races.

Gorgeous work - love the details you've put into your species, and the male's colour scheme looks great, as do all of those wonderful spikes on both genders!

Loooving the anatomy and work on here, though I juat HAVE to ask XD How can some of those spines and blades retract? I'm sure you're planning on explaining but it's buggggiiing meeeeee.

Also, the color coordination here is epic. Epic I say.

Basically the curved ones on the female retract similarly to a cats claws but with a bit more of a curve....I'm gonna need to illustrate this lol..
[link]

The blades are tucked into a pouch and are connected to a finger like joint. A lot of city dwelling Swifts get their spikes and blades removed as well as dock their horns slightly like this guy - [link]

Also the blades and spikes can be customized surgically to retain a certain shape. They are a very technology driven society; so having these blades are just there as a reminder of their more brutal past.

Hopefully that helps <33 and thank you so much for the compliments!

I see now! This makes a lot more sense, thank you XD And wow, it really is all very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to satisfy my curiosity! I've always loved seeing created races, especially when they have explanations for everything!

I'm gonna say this is one of the more complete ones I've ever seen! You deserve the compliments XD
