Description A few years ago I began work on a Pokémon fan project entitled Pokémon Rust. I opted for a word that deviated from Pokémon nomenclature if only slightly, alluding to a shade of orange while also calling back to the roots of the series. I began my venture down ol' Pocket Monster road with Blue back in '98. In recent years, Pokémon designs have evolved and devolved in varied regards. I wanted to recapture a certain feel from Generation I that hasn't shone so brightly as of late. Can't say what, but these designs are what my search has amounted to.

In terms of typing, I wanted each starter to have strengths and weaknesses in inverse triads. Fire beats Grass, which beats Water that beats Fire. Check. But now our Fire Pokémon is half Psychic, so it beats Water's Fighting, which beats Grass's Dark that beats Fire's Psychic. Inverse cycles. Balances and provides an interesting conceptual basis for which to design elemental creatures. Thus an ostrich witchdoctor, a jackalbat monk, and an octopus warrior.

After a week of plowing through failed designs, I ended up with these, and I'm very happy with the turnout. Maybe I'll design some more Pokémon. I never expect Pokémon Rust to be anything more than a nod to nostalgia, it's just been a constant avenue to explore Pokémon artistically. After all, it's the creature designs that reckon me back time and again to the series; I no longer play the games. Enjoy!

So I was just informed by someone that Warctopod highly resembles a Smogon fakemon called Arghonaut. Looked it up. DAMN. Total coincidence, but I'm disappointed in the sheer similarity. Even the typing is the same. Oh well, c'est la vie.

Probably the best pokemon designs I've seen(including the real ones).

Alright! I may some day revisit with their pre-evolutions. I'm still fond of these designs, I think because I slaved over getting Sugimori's style down and even then, I deviated a bit with sharper shadows. Glad you enjoy!

I really like the ideas and the style is cool too ^^ it's nice to have such a description on it as well it was cool to read up on ^^ by also sheer coincidence, I read it and realised you had the exact same thoughts as me with the reverse typing haha

grass    > water   > fire   > grass

fighting < psychic < dark < fighting

Great minds? xD I hope you do continue though your other work is also stunning,

Thanks dood! I'd like to eventually try my hand at Pokémon again, though I'd say this was definitely my most focused effort. I worked for days on these portraits, trying to get them just perfect. Of course they're not; there are small areas (specifically thinking of Skeltrich's mouth) that could use some refining, but overall I am very happy with how they turned out. This was a personal study of Sugimori's art style, nothing else. A full Pokémon Rust Pokédex would be awesome, but I have neither the time or interest to invest myself in such an endeavor. Glad you enjoy!

I'd like to collaborate with you on a design or two sometime. We could trade the Pokémon back and forth throughout its development.

Np ^^ and you should even if not a full dex just perhaps a legendary concept I will be refining my work too over time it's a pain but it must be done, I wanna redesign Squoink I hate it lol, and I just saw a fakemon artist who has like a full dex or something of designs sketched together on pages and their originality coupled with the genuinely perfect pokemon look of their concepts made me wanna cry and if I'm honest made me highly critical of everything in my gallery lol, so I guess I need to improve a lot. That or the whole artists will always despise their own work thing is kicking in >.>

I would love to collaborate sometime though sure ^^ I'm not sure exactly what on but I guess we could figure that out xD if you ever have something specific in mind shout me I'm always around [=

I'd love to see someone make official-quality sprites of them. I'm not sure I'd get around to it, though I could...

I'm excited about X and Y moving into full 3D, but the lack of sprites is saddening. It's been a staple of the games for so long. Guess sprites will fall into the realm of fan games. I forsee as Pokémon continues to evolve through 3D that fan games will come to full fruition and release, the likes and quality of Pokémon Garnet. I think the lack of old school Pokémoning from Gamefreak will inspire the fans to emulate what we're all nostalgic for.

I forsee a near-future where Pokémon is equally created by both Gamefreak and the fans alike. It's not farfetched to assume fan artists the likes of Poke-Luka would be hired by Gamefreak to design official Pokémon either. I think fan art is the future of franchises. The people are what keep these franchises alive, literally. The developers create, but the fans provide love enough for the series to continue being produced. That love is the nexus of continuity.

As such, fan art may very well evolve into a realm of honest concept art, where companies outsource creative roles to internet artists, sowing the franchise's future in the fans themselves. I would love to see this level of cooperation develop. Some developers listen intently to the fans' pleas, interests, and desires. If more developers would hire the fans on, we could have a multitude of content produced at a higher frequency and with widespread fervor.

What a tangent! Glad you enjoy my work Puppeteer-D!

Interesting theory. A game made by both the devellopers and the fans could definitely amount to something amazing. If not the future of franchises, definitely a very important stepping stone to their survival and continued popularity. And hey, don't mention it, man. You're a talented artist and i'm an advocate of well made fakemon. Great work!

Very good!

I like these designs because they are, somehow, a gush of fresh air compared to what is usually around here. The Pokémon fandom has evolved together with the games and the Fakemon look progressively simpler and smoother. These three, however... they have that kind of "wild" appearance of the old sprites and the first generation illustrations for Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise. Apart from that, of course, the technique is very good.

Very nice designs. I just love them! I'll watch you just in case you decide to make more ^^

Good luck!

Thank you! That's exactly what I was going for. When I think of sprites from Red & Blue, I think of Mewtwo, Golbat, Dragonite, Pinsir—those you remember to be more feral; as if the design had yet to be tamed, but possessed early nuances no longer prevalent in the Pokémon aesthetic.

I really like your ideas and designs !!

The only similar thing with the Smogon octopus is that it's a "pirate-like octopus", but both of them have their own designs ^^

Trueform [2012-08-08 21:02:49 +0000 UTC]

I had noticed a similarity to a smogon creation, but in all honesty i could tell it as a passing resemblance of coincidence. I think I would choose Jakylpyre, just because he looks so badass and moody sitting there, but I do have a liking for both the psychic and fire types! It is hard to choose though.

Incidentally, it is also the creature designs that appeal to me most about the pokemon games (I played Pokemon Black/White, but not as much as the other games). At the moment I'd rather design something than play an official game.

Spire-III In reply to Trueform [2012-08-08 22:45:41 +0000 UTC]

Dude, exactly. I played White, beat the E4 and grew incredibly bored. The designs of the Pokémon weren't captivating enough to propel me to catch 'em all.

I too would rather design the creatures than play the games. Drafting ideas is more enjoyable than playing a stagnating game. The imagination is boundless!

Also, I noticed that Jakylpyre and Skeltrich are totally Batman and The Joker, whereas Warctopod is a nod to The Legend of Zelda (Hylian Shield-shaped head, Majora/Sheikah eyes, Octorok..) Subconscious channeling at its best.

Trueform In reply to Spire-III [2012-08-08 22:53:27 +0000 UTC]

I think it could stem from the inspirations behind the ideas; a lot of the time, recent pokemon designs are either indefinable in their inspiration source or based on inanimate objects Don't get me wrong, some are really good, but some are just...

Yes! The imagination is capable of so much more than rubbish tip mounsters shaped like mice! (ok when I say it like that, it sounds interesting but you should be ashamed, Garbedor!)

Oh wow, that is a good point, awesome! I was considering doing some fakemon based on heroes and villains (though more directly I guess) but hell yeah, when you mention it you can see the comicy awesomeness in a very subtle sense!

Very epic designs. Definitely watchin' ya, since you have epic fakemon designs and also are a Zelda fan.^^ Like yourself, I've got a number of Zelda game concepts as well. 10 of them actually.

These look really great, I love the art and the colours!

I know exactly what you mean about the generational changes and I, too, have tried to keep the same ethics of the original pokemon with my designs.

Also like you, I chose an inverse triad (the typings are identical!) so I hope you visit my galler yand let me know what you think!

Great job on these, truly awesome work.
