Story - 373
Sparrow snorted as Eliza urged her into place, staring at the jumps that surrounded them worriedly before taking a deep breath to calm herself. Jumping wasn't necessarily her forte and she was still new to it, but Nickolai had faith in her. She glanced over at the stands, seeing her boss standing in his suit and tie next to a very pale man who looked too young to have white hair. Shaking her head to clear it, she gripped the reins before urging the mare beneath her to start. She'd noticed many of the jumps were quite high, giving her a sense of doubt, but she tried to push it aside and have confidence that Sparrow could make it.
They soured over the first jump, landing with a thud into the dirt before making for the next jump. They were all nicely decorated, having some form of wildlife infused with them to match the flowers that laid around the fence of the arena. Sparrow had even tried to eat one of the flowers before the competition had begun, something that didn't quite surprise Eliza.
The pair reached a row of three jumps back to back, Eliza's heart beating a bit faster than before and she could see Sparrow's ears pin back out of the corners of her eyes. The mare did not like what she saw, but Eliza urged her forward despite. The mare jumped the first, then the second, and barely flew over the third, making Eliza's heart skip a beat. Luckily no poles had been knocked down...yet.
Reaching one of the more harder jumps, Sparrow lept into the air, but Eliza cursed herself in her head. They'd jumped too late and she heard the clang of Sparrow's legs hitting the top poll, making it fall to the ground right before they landed.
Shit, she thought to herself but pressed Sparrow on, the mare flicking her tail and shaking her head, making her mane sway side to side.
When they finally finished the obstacle course, Eliza slowed the horse down to a stop, glancing over at Nickolai who gave her a thumbs up and a smile. She returned the smile with a weary one, uncertain of her performance and feeling on edge.
Party
Eliza didn't exactly care for parties, but Nickolai insisted she had to go to make a good reputation.
She let out a sigh, smoothing out her dress and looking around awkwardly as she stood beside her boss. "Ug, there's a reason I don't wear dresses a lot," she muttered, mostly to herself as she crossed her arms.
"Oh shush, you look nice," Nickolai complimented, making Eliza blush and let out a huff.
"I don't doubt I do, but doesn't mean I like it," she responded, her boss rolling his eyes. He was such a gentleman, she somewhat envied his wife in a way to be blessed with such a nice man as him.
Looking up when a young man approached, Eliza eyed the strawberry blonde man curiously. She recognized him as Leon Winchester, the owner of the stable. She was surprised by how young he was, but she had to admire his ambitions for being a stable owner at such a young age despite not knowing anything about him.
"Ah, thanks for coming!" he said as he shook Nickolai's hand and then Eliza's. "Have some drinks and food, we have a snack table over there. We're going to announce prizes in an hour or so so just relax and enjoy," he told them before spotting some more people entering the party. "Excuse me," he hummed before leaving to great the others.
"Well," Eliza said out loud before looking at Nickolai when he waived to a white-haired man.
"Max, good to see you again," he said and shook the man's hand.
"Same to you," he winked before looking at Eliza. "And ciao, my lady," he hummed in a quite stereotypical Italian accent while bowing slightly to her.
He was obviously American, no doubting that, but he also fascinated her, mostly because of his white hair, pale skin, and red eyes. After a moment she realized he was an albino, the first one she'd ever seen.
"If you wish to impress me try not doing so in such a bad accent," she told him, her face showing un-amusement at his greeting, the man lifting his hands up in defeat.
"Alright, alright," he chuckled. "Your friend Nick over here was telling me during your jump that you're still new to doing Show Jumping? Wasn't bad, everyone starts somewhere," he shrugged and grinned at her, making Eliza blush faintly and then glare at Nickolai for having told him she was a newbie.
"What? It's true," the older man chuckled. "Anyway, why don't you join us at a table and have some refreshments while we wait?" he offered Max.
"That sounds lovely," he hummed, winking at Eliza and making her roll her eyes.
"Oh goody," she muttered.
