Description
a not so good picture of my newest project. oh well. i'll try to get a better one, i was just so excited to finally have finished it!now, the technical stuff.
this is a locket i made out of brass and brass and copper mokume gane (a really cool traditional japanese technique for patterning layered metal, you should check it out). i made the mokume out of 17 layers of brass and copper, and the fired it in an electric kiln, and forged it/roller milled it to 18 gauge sheet, then patterned it. that whole bit took me like, an entire week of 5 hours a day. crazy. i wish you could see the mokume better n the image.. it looks way better in real life.
anyway, the mokume is sweat soldered to the brass, which i then die-formed using a die i made (which is why there is that cool ridge in the back!). the brass lip that is on the inside holds a mechanism that prevents the lid from opening farther than it does. the lip also holds two tiny magnets at the bottom point that hold it shut when worn.
this is the locket open, you can guess what it looks like closed. or maybe i'll upload a picture of that too. the whole thing is maybe 3/4 of an inch wide, and 2.5 inches from top to bottom. the back is the reverse of the front, mokume and all.
ok, end rambling.

Beautiful work !
But I can't see the ridge detail...in this shot.
I'm trying to figure out how to do makume gane in stainless, titanium and maybe bronze. Not sure if their melt temps will be compatible, but what the hell, nobody ever learned anything by following the rules...

Oh wow, hon, this is fantastic! I wish I could see it in person Did you do that in Duke? I SO wish I could work the metals and do a class but I'm sure it would be so expensive....I already know how ridiculous the other classes are in terms of supplies O_O

it actually isn't expensive at all- i never paid for any of the materials i used, even the silver.

...whoah, are you serious?!!! I may have to enroll in that class after all! Was it advanced metalworks or the beginner's class?

Anne, I'm so proud of you! I love your work...I've been looking at all of your latest stuff, and I haven't said anything, but you are very, very talented. I'm impressed.

Very impressive. I especially like the brass and copper mokume gane. The whole piece has a nice earthy feel to it. How do you plan on attaching it to a necklace, or the bail?
I need to learn how to do the mokume technique. I see it here and there and have always liked the way it looks. I wonder what the pieced would look like if the brass and copper mokume was patina'd with liver of sulfur and then the brass polished leaving the copper black. hmmmm...

Wow, when you said the dimensions - it's a lot smaller than I guess by looking at the picture since it's zoomed in so much! Nice job!! I need to do some mokume again!
