Description
THIS IS ALL I USEBoth programs are free and the camera is just a simple $50-$70 (depending where you live) Wal-Mart camera. Now some may ask how I use this equipment to make an animation...Well Guess What I'm here to give you my personal and simplest steps on how to make a simple video animation. Hope this helps you all.
STEPS
1. get some video of a pose or action then save it on the computer...(AVI files work well)
2. open it on quicktime player which is free at this site or any other on google
[link]
3. just copy LAYERS of the video while its paused in quicktime and paste it into gimp.....(gimp you must press the "new layer" button on the layers dialog box after each paste)
4. gimp can be found at the following links.....
Windows: [link]
Mac: [link]
5. then just keep pasteing image by image in gimp then save it as a GIF format which all you do is just add ".gif" at the end of the name of the document then you'll have the option of saving it as an animation or "save as merged"...select animation.....and ta da u made a simple animation
P.S. if u wish to add effect like erasing urself or shooting lighting waves then please do effects before u save it as a "gif".....or either you'll just have a picture that moves which is fine just no super effects...if u dont finish a project then dont worry gimp also has a file type u are able to save to called XCF....so basicly when u saved ur project just add ".xcf" at the end of the name......and u can get back to ur project with no lost data
SUGGESTION: An actual video camera is alot better to use then a digital unless you can set your camera to NOT have auto light setting

What I've done in the past is uploaded the video into Vegas with effects, then upload privately into YouTube. After that I import it into a paid version of gifsoup.com, download it, then import it into Photoshop and edit all the frames, then I transfer it into Illustrator for final touches.

in gimp you can download an extra animation pack GAP that makes it way easier, you can just pick out a video and the frames from the video you want and they all show up in layers! ^~^ love your animations btw

Do you have to have GAP to make animations, or can you just use GIMP?

That's cool Thanks for makin' a little thing so people can -try to- make things like you. I'll have to try it out sometime.
I have a question though; I got GIMP a few weeks ago but I couldn't make animations until I got GAP: do you need both programs or was that my error?

You don't need Gap but you can use it as a replacement, it just tends to be abit more difficult and time consuming.

Thanks. All I really need to get is Quicktime.
Just curious...can you use any video player on your computer and just press the "print screen" button, then paste it into Gimp?

you can use that method too. you just have to crop it when your done with all the layers.

I use gimp but every time I upload it dA says "select a preview image" because it saves as a document! How do I convert it to a picture file?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Splinks In reply to HPbowchicka [2009-06-02 03:40:18 +0000 UTC]
You'll have to make 150 x 150 or smaller sized image as a preview. So basically just upload both animations, the miniature and regular...and should be ok

well it depends on the effect. for a simple one without effects it would be maybe 10 minutes, But effects and tons of touch ups take and hour to 5 hours with no breaks

I might add that if you have a way to lock down your camera you should. Also, if you have a camera you can set high speed multiple picture takes you can get pretty much the same effect as a digital camcorder and not have to worry about copying frames from a video.

Hmmm that's not a bad idea, but during filming there's a lot of dead footage that i cut out. And my camera unfortunately doesn't have that feature. But if I were to do picture shooting I would make so many mistakes like accidental deleting and image sizing
