Description The MV-14B Hornet is the UNSc's replacement for the Human-Covenant War era AV-14 Hornet, which had seen service continually since 2424. Like its predecessor, the MV-14B achieved hover and vertical take-off and landing capabilities, as well as unparalleled agility and high speed, through a combination of engines; two vectoring downwards-facing turbofans provided vertical and lateral thrust, while two additional rear-facing turbofans provided linear movement. The MV-14B included dozens of major and hundreds of minor improvements over the A model, the most notable of these being more efficient engines, stronger armour and advanced avionics. A major change of layout was the addition of two large wing stubs, which could hold a substantial arsenal mounted to hardpoints. This meant the Hornet could be armed with weaponry specific to its current mission, carrying air-to ground missiles, air-to-air missiles or rockets exclusively, or a mix of the three. The Hornet was capable of a range of combat, support and utility roles, including personnel transport, escort and attack missions, search and reconnaissance, casualty evacuation and observation. The Hornet's most common tasks included close air support and insertion of small scale regular and special forces infantry units.

length:7.9m
width: 9.6m
height: 4.11m
mass: 1,345kg (unloaded)
armament:
-chin-mounted M84 heavy machine gun (1)
-M477 15mm railgun (2)
-wing stub multi-load hardpoints (6):
--M691 rocket launcher (19 rockets/hardpoint)
--AIM-109 Medusa (4 missiles/hardpoint)
--AGM-148 Scorpion (2 missiles/hardpoint)
-single load ventral hardpoints (6)
crew: Pilot (1)

I love the Hornet's design, but felt it was under-armed for the roles it's supposed to fill. It's probably over-armed now, but oh well

has anyone ever wondered why we can't use all the rockets on the hornet at once?

If the pylons are removable then it can easily perform it's multi-role fuction, If not then oh well, you still have a kickass gunship Plus you still have the standard AV-14 and the Falcon.

Yep, they're removable, but that was mostly an after-thought after I realised that I couldn't add more weapons AND change it from an AV to an MV designation.

Would be nice to see the Hornet in Halo 4, provided 343 don't completely mess up the design like they did, IMHO, with the battle rifle!

SplinteredMatt In reply to JeanLucCaptain [2012-02-23 22:02:46 +0000 UTC]

Haha. I used Avatar's Scorpion as well as the AH-64 Apache as references for this. I only fear that now I've given it too many weapons to be a multirole aircraft.

But hey, they say you can never have too many guns!
