so to be completely honest I was originally inspired by that stupid low poly 3D Daytona USA bird model that literally is a boomerangbut then this turned into a lot more of a personal OC and i completely adore them they are my chILD
the more you know:
-Sail is about the size of a small Skiff/Sailboat, but can change sizes at will, anywhere from the size of a small bird to the size of a jet plane
-They are soft to the touch, almost feeling like a mixture of canvas and feathers
-when they fly or glide they sound like the light passing of wind over a plane, but if caught in a rougher draft their wings flutter and make noise like paper in a gust
-Flies almost without needing to move their wings, turning and gaining/losing altitude like a proper airplane
-They can fold their wings up tight to their body but they prefer to carry them extended upwards like great big boat sails
-likes water and can get wet. They like to sit on the surface of water like a giant seagull
-absolutely loves playing with sailors or anyone at the beach
-can crumple like a paperball if they are small enough, but will always pop back to form

The body shape, from legs to ear-nubs to face & eye shape to the tail fan, are all near-exactly like how toothless looks. My literal first thought at seeing this was you made a nightfury fan variant oc.

I can see why you think that, as the character can possibly be mistaken as a Nightfury due to its round shape. However, you need to look a bit more objectively at the designs, and the situation.
First, consider that not everything is 100% original. Secondly, just because something is famous doesn't mean it is the first.
The people who designed Toothless are artists, just like all of us here. They have influences, both conscious and subconscious, and these come together to form the final design/artwork.
Toothless didn't pop out of nowhere. Yes, he is an extremely unique design (and so cute!) but his design is inspired by real animals (like a cat) and other people's designs (like the original one in the HTTYD book)
There were characters with bulky legs before Toothless (though not common in dragons I think).
Ear nubs look similar from a distance but: Sail has one pair of smooth nubs. Toothless had three pairs of scaled, wibbly shaped nubs.
Face shape is completely different, especially the mouth.
The eye shape of Toothless (big, green, cat-like) is completely different to Sail (small, black, beady) so I have no idea where you drew that conclusion from.
Tail fans are rather common in most dragon designs, and is not original/distinct to Toothless. I have been drawing them on dragons before HTTYD existed, and I'm sure many others had too. Not to mention that the tail and wings of Sail is paper/plane/sail-like, and definitely not like Toothless's bat/fish-like ones; no idea where you drew than conclusion from.
In particular, their silhouettes are very different.
Designs don't pop out of nowhere. For example, dragons aren't drawn from nowhere. They are drawn from pre-existing knowledge of dragons from medieval times etc. Pre-existing animals such as lizards, dogs, etc.
The way we perceive the world around us depends on what we know as well. For example, I actually thought of something else when I saw just Sail's head in the thumbnail (a small anthro imp creature thing in a Japanese style if you must know XD Didn't think of Toothless at all). Because you have watched HTTYD, and are perhaps a fan, you are more inclined to first think of HTTYD when you look at Sail.
Lastly, trustΒ Spockirkcoy. They weren't thinking of Toothless while designing Sail, and hence wasn't inspired by him. However, they were inspired by a rather funny low poly bird XDΒ
It makes no sense for a person to deny inspiration from certain sources - also no benefit for them to not list HTTYD as an inspiration but list a gif as one.
I do appreciate your effort to catch lack of credit, though. We do need more awareness of art theft 
Both Toothless and Sail are creative designs, a result of the artist(s) and their experiences, individual and shared - this is the human experience.Β
(A bit out of topic, but I have a species which I have never posted anywhere, and was surprised when an artist I watched had artwork of an extremely similar creature. Did this artist steal my idea? No. We are all humans and have the amazing ability to conjure ideas from the things around us. It was a cool coincidence that we had a similar species

as far as I remember, Toothless doesnt have black bead eyes or an egg-shaped head. a lot of dragons have that body shape, and tail fans aren't exclusive to Toothless.

I'm an absolute SUCKER for simple or streamline (I think thats the word?) designs! Love the lore/facts too and I can totally see a fantasy world were these guys are out on the ocean and travelers come to see them gather or what have you. Awesome design~
