Niclear carpet bombing of cities is not just a fantasy. In the middle of the Cold War both sides figured out that it was a much more efficient use of fissile material and energy to use ten or so medium size bombs in the hundred kiloton range instead of one or two multi megaton bombs. A city like New York or Beijing would face anihilation via precisely placed warheads spread out over a large area, completely carpeting the city in nuclear fire.

This is fantastic work, the only problem I have with it is that by the time the mushroom cloud was that big, the blast radius would be much much larger. More like 40-70 city blocks.

Well, if the Japan did not surrender after Hiroshima, US did planned to do that before the invasion. About 14 bombs were ordered.
