Remember this old thing?

Old designs:
spookapi.deviantart.com/art/Wo…
spookapi.deviantart.com/art/WO…

I’ve just been looking back on the other two designs and I realize I like a lot of things from the first but I felt like it needed to be a lot more polished.
Honestly I’m still not probably going to do much with the Deepwings, I’m not planning to anyway. But I still like them and felt like now that I’ve made some improvement in my art, I might as well draw them as good a reference as I can for now.

Basic info I guess:

Deepwing scales are usually quite desaturated blues or purples to just grays. Uncommonly they can be reddish as well – but very rarely are they really ever green. Green scales is more of a Seawing color.

Deepwings have more ‘open gills’ unlike the Seawings more closed ones. This makes their gills a bit more vulnerable to injury but it increases their efficiency in getting oxygen from the water. It also makes their gills more sensitive to dry air, and the gills are the first part to dry up on a Deepwing that’s out of the water for too long.

Deepwings have a light underside and a dark top to help blend in with the water. From above they blend into the shadows below, from below they blend in more to the light closer to the surface.

Most if not all of the things I’ve said from past refs still apply to Deepwings now, so if you really want to learn more you can go read all the info I put there.
