Description
So uhstory time
Three young SharkScales from Queen Thrashkill's pod go out swimming around the ShoreScale hunting areas. It was a nice partly cloudy day.
They were all playing simple games and chasing each other around until the oldest, Fishblood, started to tease their younger brother, Stingtail, about how he has yet to catch a ShoreScale by himself. Unlike Fishblood, of course, who definitely has without exaggeration at all.
So then Stingtail rashly declared he would go and catch a ShoreScale all by himself right then, so Fishblood would finally shut up about it and Stingtail could brag too.
The youngest, Shellbite, who was Stingtail's friend, tried insisting to follow Stingtail at least, but Stingtail adamantly declined. He's not a little dragonet after all - and what would a ShoreScale even do to him? Blind him by flashing?
With that, Stingtail swam off, closer to the shore (around the the "middle finger" of Chimarra,, on the Eastern side,) while Fishblood looked on unimpressed, and fully expecting Stingtail to come back empty handed and with some kind of excuse.
The day was pleasant and the water was calm.
Shorestalker was helping Froth, an elderly ShoreScale lady, catch crabs. She had scars all across her front legs that ShoreScale could never figure out what made then, and she was known for limping heavily on her left hand, but she never complained about it - just glared at at any dragon who stared at her too long or dismissing anyone who tried to do things for her.
Froth's pretty stubborn in a kinda unpleasant way and Shorestalker was 99% sure she disliked him, but he still chose to go and help her crab fish when he could. She'd glance at him a lot though, like she expected him to tear her apart any moment.
So anyway, Shorestalker followed Froth more north than crab-fishers usually tend to go as she insisted there always was and always will be better catches there. He helped her collects some crabs into some nets, before she got annoyed with him over something and said she'd do better on her own and Shorestalker could just help her carry them all back. So while Froth stayed fishing around the shore, Shorestalker swam out a bit farther.
Not far from there, Shorestalker noticed an unusual movement in the calm water and he caught a brief smell from nearby that he wasn't used to. And then he saw it - the silhouette of a reddish-purple SharkScale. One not much bigger than him, in fact, and they had a cluster of stinging tendrils around their tail.
Shorestalker felt terrified seeing a SharkScale so close like this on his own and he wondered where they were going - then he realized they were heading down the shoreline, straight towards Froth. Shorestalker couldn't tell if this SharkScale was aware of Froth or not, or whether they were really alone - but Shorestalker panicked at the thought of Froth being killed and quickly swam in front of the SharkScale.
They stopped and looked at Shorestalker confused and slightly annoyed, making some kind of clicking and humming sound that Shorestalker couldn't understand. Then silence. Red eyes staring into red eyes.
Then the other SharkScale made some low clicks, and began to swim past Shorestalker, but then Shorestalker moved without thinking, scratching the maroon SharkScale. They looked back with wide, startled eyes - despite being from a wild pod, Shorestalker noticed they had somehow looked even more terrified than Shorestalker could ever imagine a SharkScale looking.
He was used to all the SharkScale murals, of sharp-toothed smiling monsters.
What happened exactly then, Shorestalker doesn't remember. It felt like he blacked out somehow and all that was left was the taste of blood and the images of murals depicting ShoreScales being eaten alive and hunted by smiling SharkScales flashing in his head.
And then there was a dead SharkScale.
Shorestalker felt indescribably terrible after the event, and he prefers he never think about it again. After the killing he decided to drag the body out of the water, maybe so the smell of blood wouldn't have to linger there for long. He hid them in a cave and ran back into the waves.
After cooling down as much as he could, Shorestalker went back to find Froth had already left without him. Swimming back home, he found her along the way and apologized for abandoning her.
She scoffed and then paused, squinting at him.
"What's that blood in your teeth?"
"O-oh, it's nothing! I just ate some fish."
Shorestalker couldn't tell if she believed him or not. His brain hurt to much to be afraid of her, because he was more afraid of himself.
Later that day, he told his mom, Queen Myriad Splash, that he noticed the smell of SharkScale out around where they were fishing. She went on to warn the fishers about it.
Meanwhile Fishblood and Shellbite had been waiting for a while. Fishblood was listlessly sifting through the sand while Shellbite paced anxiously. It was going to get dark soon and Stingtail had yet to return. So Shellbite convinced Fishblood to go help him look for Stingtail. If Fishblood didn't go, Shellbite would have looked for Stingtail on his own anyway.
They swam out for a while, and then there was a concerning smell of SharkScale blood. Fishblood found a trail of blood across the nearby shore, and there they found Stingtail laying limply, his head propped on a rock as if he was resting on the most uncomfortable pillow.
He was dead, and the bite-mark on his neck looked just like a SharkScale's.
Even aloof Fishblood was a little freaked out, and could barely comprehend their little brother's demise. Shellbite on the other-hand, was shaking and couldn't bring himself to look at Stingtail any longer than he had to.
Fishblood took charge and tried to calm Shellbite down (albeit Fishblood was never good at calming anyone down.) Fishblood would carry the body back and show the wound to Queen Thrashkill - there must be some kind of cannibal pod or rogue SharkScale around who did this after all. With Thrashkill's support they could avenge Stingtail. They had to avenge Stingtail.
They returned to show Queen Thrashkill the body and tell her what happened. Only then did they realize how suspicious they ended up looking - the bite mark wasn't big, and in fact wouldn't be too hard to imagine being a bite mark from Shellbite. Queen Thrashkill pointed this out, which caused Shellbite to go wide-eyed in horror and Fishblood admittedly felt terrible that they hadn't realized the danger Shellbite would be in - and they wished they had thought of making up a less suspicious story to tell Thrashkill.
Queen Thrashkill decided she'd hold off on punishing Shellbite though, since Fishblood was defending him, and she'd look into this murderer on the loose or potential cannibal pod.
Stingtail's body was eaten the usual Thrashkill pod way, but Fishblood and Shellbite were excluded from it - but even if he could, Shellbite wouldn't have touched the body.
After the incident, some time has went by without much evidence of Stingtail's murderer and Shellbite grows more and more scared of being executed each day. Other young SharkScales often tease him as "Neckbite" and exclude him from joining any games.
Fishblood feels terrible about Shellbite (and Stingtail) and they're often trying to hang out with Shellbite whenever they can, so Shellbite doesn't feel too alone. Fishblood still avoids being near "Neckbite" around their friends or family though, in fear of being too closely associated with him by others.
Shellbite might just run away, if Stingtail's killer isn't found soon. Even if that makes him seem more suspicious, he's afraid of what Thrashkill will do to him once time runs out.
Yay tragic story that took too long to write.
I had all this in my head, but geez writing it makes me suffer apparently
lol
So this is a fun image too, I hope it isn't too graphic? I was trying out some stuff with the perspective/lens blur. I'm hoping it looks okay
Also:
- Fishblood is red with red eyes and lighter marks on the back of their ears. They're probably around 8 years old.
- Stingtail was a maroon color with red eyes, lighter marks on the back of his ears and also a bunch of stinging tendrils around his tail. He was probably 6 years old.
- Shellbite is blue-purple with dark red eyes. He's probably 6 years old, but also younger than Stingtail.
- Froth's scales are a mixture of white, mint green and light blue, with a slightly darker blue-green underbelly and her eyes are light blue. She has many scars criss-crossing across both her arms, probably from fighting a SharkScale and living once when she was younger. The scars are so bad on her left hand, that she has trouble walking on it (it might also have long been twisted, or something.) Froth is probably around 66 years old. Her scales are duller than they used to be.
I might give these characters refs, in the meantime feel free to interpret their descriptions and draw them if you want lol
might be fun to see what others imagine
