Description fffffffff. Guys, this is my new fandom. I am so serious. (The Nyoro~n comic should prove my seriousness beyond a doubt) The Brothers Karamazov ! I'm not sure why it doesn't have a fandom; I've seen quite a few entries about people lamenting that fact, though. So rather than just depressing about it, I AM BEING PROACTIVE. You know this is an awesome fandom that you want to be in. Hell yes books written in 1880.

Moar probably coming in the future, hahaha. The physical descriptions in that book are incredibly lacking, so I'm just kind of making shit up, I hope everyone's identifiable for who they are ; ; Various scenes from the book pictured here, not gonna mention them all (extra points for you if you can pick out which, though, I suppose XD). Except the one with the blood, since I swear to god that chapter was comedy gold:

"Pyotr Ilyitch seemed to hurry Misha off on purpose, because the boy remained standing with his mouth and eyes wide open, apparently understanding little of Mitya's orders, gazing up with amazement and terror at his bloodstained face and the trembling blood-stained fingers that held the notes"

(Additionally, Ivan didn't come there to make friends. He came to win. )

Incidentally, I saw they are showing a miniseries of this in one of our channels beginning this week. I can't decide whether to watch it or not, as I usually tend to shy away from movies or series made about books I like.

Yeah, I liked this book, allthough Crime and punishment hold a special place in my heart, so it's still my fave Dostojevski. When I read it ten years ago, I realised Dostojevski wasn't utterly odd and boring. You see, before that I had only read Dostojevski's humorous parodies (which my mom loves) and they just didn't work for me. I didn't understand the humor and the parody of them.

I should re-read Idiot.

BTW, have you read Crime and punishment?

Oh, is it this miniseries? I've been looking for any other info on it everywhere online, but all I can find is the trailer T_T If so, envy!! It looks quite good.

And no, I haven't read C & P yet, though I plan to soon!

For some reason, I can't follow that link, but it's a Russian mini-series.

Woops, I messed up the HTML. This should work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lieju In reply to spoonybards [2009-11-14 08:51:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's it. It's an 8-parts miniseries, about 8 hours in total, so it should work better than a movie-format. BTW, does your copy of the book have a foreword written by Dostojevski? Where he talks about how this book is a one story, but two novels?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

spoonybards In reply to Lieju [2009-11-14 09:05:26 +0000 UTC]

Aw man, neat!! I hope it's online at some point. And..I..think so! In the beginning there's something like "This story is in two parts, one written in present time, and one in the past." Which is so weird because I was set up to believe that there was gonna be a jump in time at some point within that book, and then there...wasn't XD I later learned about how he was gonna make it part of a series, but you think they would of mentioned to readers (*btw the guy kinda died after this, don't pay attention to this)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lieju In reply to spoonybards [2009-11-14 09:42:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know that, but it's a good thing the book can stand alone so well, allthough it's a shame we never got to read the continuation of the story.

I was kinda confused with that "two stories". Apparently he means that the first part is the family history where he explains how the brothers were related? Since he says that the first novel is not a novel at all, but just a "one scene of the early life of our hero" .

I...don't think I can love you anymore than I do. I freaking love Dostoevsky (and I agree that there was a lot of inadvertently funny stuff in the book; but that's bound to happen when most of the men are mentally ill and the women are all rambling and histrionic too).

I love your take on these characters!! Ivan's the one with the sideburns, right? He's fiiiiine.

spoonybards In reply to SabreSoul [2009-10-03 05:19:47 +0000 UTC]

Haha so true! By the end of the book I was like 'this needs it's own drinking game -- 2 shots every time someone gets ill from all their hysterics'. Drunk by the end of a single chapter. XD

Yeah! Thank you!!

Hahaaa, great idea! I would try that when I read it again, but I think it would kill me. XD

And also, you have the most delightful, fun, confident drawing style and I hope this isn't the last of the Karamazov brothers I'll see from you!!

I used to read Dostojevski when I was a kid. I mean, his stuff was easily as exciting as any adventure books for kids, and as a bonus, more thought-provoking. Unfortunately, I haven't read them for a while, got swept to other things and fandoms. I am not even sure if I have read this particular book, but thanks for reminding me of it.

You know what, I'm gonna find this and read it, and if you want to have a discussion about it afterwards, well, that would be fun.

Is that by the same Russian guy who wrote Crime and Punishment? I was debating whether or not to read that cause Crime and Punishment was AWESOME.

Books of literary merit meets fandom, gotta love pop culture! And I think "Fuck Everything" is a much better alternative to Nyoro~n. xD
