Description
Edit: To everyone who has a technical question such as the size of my brushes or various other settings, I'm sorry but I no longer use SAI. I'm currently using Photoshop on a Mac, and so it's not possible for me to check these settings so I can answer your questions (unless you know some way for me to run SAI on a Mac with pressure sensitivity, in which case I'll love you forever). I'm very sorry if this causes an inconvenience, and while I will still gladly attempt to help with technical problems, I apologize if I'm unable to do so adequately._______________
[link] Download a 31 trial of Easy Paint Tool SAI here.
[link] Purchase a program license here.
Questions or concerns are welcome.
Part 2: [link]
Edit: It's come to my understanding that the ink pen is not a standard part of the basic SAI's tools set. I obtained it from downloading the trial of the 1.0.1 version of SAI. If you want the ink pen tool, you can download my brush set from here . Simply replace your folder "toolnmr" with the one contained in the .zip and you will have access to all of the same brushes used in this tutorial including the ink pen. (In the event something goes awry, you may want to move your original "toolnmr" folder before replacing it with the one in the .zip, just to be safe.)
[May 16: I just realized that I had the wrong file up for download; the .zip contained the elemap folder instead of the toolnmr folder. It should be fixed now, but please let me know if you run into any other problems.]
Edit 2: ~phirecracker left this helpful piece of advice for anyone having trouble getting the ink pen tool from the above download.
"After unzipping the file, open up the folder 'toolrnm' that you have just downloaded, copy the file
'10.ini' from Spoonzmeister's folder and paste it into your own 'toolrnm' folder. It works
btw '10.ini' is the ink pen tool. This method would work for any other tool that you're missing too. gl!"
Everyone say thaaaaanks to ~phirecracker !
MOAR EDIT!: If you STILL can't get the ink pen tool to work, you can try making your own.
1.) Open Notepad.
2.) Copy and paste the following into your new text file:
[ToolParam]
id=1
name=Ink Pen
desc=
key=
tabflt=0
tabflt_prs=0
brpat_vsbpos=0
brwav=2
drawmode=1
brsize=66
brsizesc=1
depth=100
f_showopt=1
f_prs2dp=0
f_prs2sz=1
f_prs2bl=0
prsfeel=10
szmin=0
dpmin=0
dpmax=100
bfval=50
txval=95
quality=1
blend=0
water=0
stretch=0
smooth=0
f_keepopac=0
edgehdns=0
brfnam=[None]
texnam=
3.) Save your text file.
4.) Open your toolnmr folder and look at the file names. Pick a number that isn't already in use - since you're making the ink pen tool, chances are the number 10 is a safe bet.
5.) Rename your text file [number].ini (ex: 10.ini)
6.) Move your text file into your toolnmr folder.
7.) Load up SAI and see if it worked!
Another option similar to this method would be to open 00.ini (the standard pen tool) and change the parameters to match the ones I supplied. Technically you could alter any of your tools to function as the ink pen tool, so if there's one you don't use much (like the binary tool, for example, or maybe the brush selection tool), you can find it's corresponding .ini file (just load each of them one at a time; the name of the tool should be within the few couple lines) and alter it.
Edit: ~CelestialDragonsoul provides this alternative to the above which has worked out for multiple people: "the pen tool download didn't work for me cuz somehow my SAI deleted it XD, i tried the alternative method of creating a notepad doc and neither did that work. what did work though was copying my 00 pen tool file, renaming as 10 and copying the above code into it. thankyou! though i would love to know what the 11 tool is, i'm missing that one too XD"

Wow! Your lines are so gosh darn sure of themselves. how do you keep your lines from turning out all squiggly?

Spoonzmeister In reply to Thecatoflostwords [2009-07-04 22:34:53 +0000 UTC]
Oh they're VERY squiggly if you zoom in to the full resolution. Generally I work with an image at a resolution that's at least twice as big as I want the final product to be. That way, when the lineart looks squiggly or jagged or rough at all, when I zoom out to the final size, it all looks crisp and clean.

I'm not spoonz obviously but SAI's ink pen tool makes really smooth lines pretty much automatically.

Ahhhh, I see. Unlike the awkwardly squiggly lines of the regular pen tool, yes?

Si. The regular pen tool tends to randomly change size as well. Ink pen is very consistent.

Spoonzmeister In reply to DreaChu [2009-06-21 22:08:35 +0000 UTC]
I'm not really sure what it is... A long time ago I downloaded the 1.1.1 beta which, for reasons I can't begin to imagine, is no longer available. The ink pen came with it, so I thought it was just a standard tool, but it doesn't come with version 1.1.0 which is the only version you can get anymore. So I guess it was originally intended to become a standard tool, but for some reason it was abandoned, so now the only way you can get it is to find a download.

Spoonzmeister In reply to NekoChicana [2009-06-18 23:39:31 +0000 UTC]
I'm pretty sure what you actually buy is a license key or a serial code or something rather than the actual program. You download the trial version on the website and somewhere there's a place where you input the code they give you and it unlocks it as the full version. I thought they e-mailed the codes, but they might mail them, I don't know...

How long ago did you buy it? If it's been more than a week or so, you should probably send an e-mail explaining the situation. If nothing else, it might make them go a little bit faster if you put a spotlight on them.

This was, like, the best tutorial ever! Really helped me a lot! I'm having trouble with the ink pen tool, though. I can't seem to find "toolnmr" anywhere on my laptop. Is it located in a separate folder? If you could help me, it would be much appreciated!

Spoonzmeister In reply to Sama-Rama [2009-06-16 23:36:34 +0000 UTC]
Hmmm, how about toolnrm? It looks like my silly self put the wrong folder name there. But if there's no toolnrm either, is there a folder that contains a bunch of files ending in .ini? If so, try putting the contents of the folder (which should be .ini files) from the download in the folder containing your own .ini files.

I'm a rabid SAI user, and I look to look at tutorials because I'm too insecure to make my own.
*wriggles with insecurity*
Uhm, the face beside the part where you add purple to her skin looks like an elfish Edward Cullen. I really dislike Twilight and all it stands for, so that doodle really made my day.
Also.
Instead of locking the opacity, have you tried layer groups? It's in that area, above the layer tray. If a layer is grouped, color only shows up where there's color underneath! It's nifty if you want to adjust the opacity of the shades. Which I do, because I'm bad at selecting color.
Also, if a layer is grouped, and the layer below it is also grouped, they all react with the lowest layer that isn't grouped. Play around with the feature if I make no sense!
A layer is grouped if there is red line to the left of the little thumbnail.
Uhh, long comment is long! Tutorial was nice, I saw the other part, and, umm, yey~

All you have to do is replace your toolnmr folder with the one in the .zip. SAI will recognize the files and add the brushes into the program all on its own.

Have they removed the tool from more recent versions? That's a real shame if they did; it's a really useful tool that I use all the time, and I can't imagine trying to work without it... At any rate, I'm glad the file could be useful to you.

Oh, and for the ink pen, I downloaded the zip you put up, but when I extracted the files, the folder was the elemap one...Do I rename it and replace the toolnrm, or just replace my elemap folder?

Oh jeez, I'm sorry, somehow I wound up with two files called SAI_brushes.zip and uploaded the wrong one. I fixed the link and double-checked to make sure the folder inside this time actually is the toolnrm folder, so if it turns out to be the elemap or any other folder again, let me know and I'll beat its face for being so antagonistic.

Argh! Now it's personal. I will not lose out to this file. Maybe Megaupload is just being spiteful. It keeps crashing my browser when I try to upload a file there, so I'm using different sites instead. I think it might be sabotage.

Yup, that's exactly right. Also, it looks like the file I had uploaded before actually contained the elemap folder, so if that's what you wound up with, I apologize; I fixed the link and made sure that it has the toolnmr folder this time.
