Description
First picture with a full background in a while.Originally this was supposed to be for a contest, but I just missed the deadline, plus I didn't feel like rejoining the club on this account....so here it is, for your enjoyment.
The idea is that the Glaceon just barely beat the Nosepass by spamming Water Pulse (which it can learn in the Generation III and IV games via TM). The Water Pulse is supposed to be the main light source.
I wish I planned the background better so it looked like more things were smashed...oh well. I also should have remembered to give Nosepass a shadow.
Please critique, especially the shading!

nice background! did you use your thumb to rub on the paper so you can smudge it? :3

Kleenex actually; I learned in art class that if you smudge with your thumb after a while you'll get bad oil stains on the picture.

Oh man, I am just looking at that black background of the cave and my hand is cramping. XD;;; Did that take a long time to do? It looks stressful...
I'm not sure what this looks like irl, but the contrast definitely needs to be upped. D: I couldn't tell how the battle was going before I read your description. I mean. I thought Glaceon, like, dodged some Rock Gems or whatever that move is called (those lines are nice and sharp and the rocks seem lodged in the wall), but I guess maybe the Water Pulse needs to be a lot whiter if it's supposed to be, like, the glowing lightsource or something? It's hard to see. ;;;
To go along with contrast, maybe the rocks in the back could be a little darker since they're farther away from the light source? Same goes for the rocks in front. For, like, distance effect or something.

Oh yes, it took a lot of patient to get the darker areas done.
Unlike my previous black and white pictures, I tried to make this look close to the original when I tweaked it in photoshop (instead of using auto correct)
The Glaceon dodged some stone edges and they're imbedded in some of the stalactites (and moves from earlier in the battle knocked some stalactites down).
Now that you mention it, the water pulse probably should be lighter so it's more obvious.
Another good point, but I was trying to show perspective too, and darker objects tend to look more like they were closer to the front. Meh, I really need to do more backgrounds to practice this stuff.

Hmm, I see. You wanted it to look closer to what you did, right? Though in the end, I guess the end product is what matters. D:
Hmm, that's true. But isn't that because they're getting closer to the sun or horizon or something? Does that apply to caves when there's a limited light source? Man I have no idea. I:

Yep.
Maybe....I'm not sure now. To be honest a part of me is tempted to give up on backgrounds after Poni's pic.

Hahaha, if you give up now, you'll never grow any further past your ability. I need to start having composition and backgrounds in mind now, just drawing lone people in white space looks silly. I:

Ahh, but I just did this lone figure with no background pic and it felt soooo good.

Fine, fine....it's okay to take a break now and then, but don't get too used to just drawing floating characters in white space. XD

I know. If it makes you any feel better, once I finish this HP art, I'm going to work on comics (both strips of varying length and manga style stuff).

Hopefully (although some of them ended up with some monstrous scripts, so they'd take like forever).

Are you gonna do them digitally or traditionally? Writing the words traditionally gets really messy.... D:
