Orion scampered back to Phoebe with the returned tear. He grinned. Phoebe could plant the seed. Her first one would be a magical one from the Blue Moon Cresselia too. The Sneasel grinned wider at the thought. Phoebe smiled back and wiped her eyes on her hands before taking it.
“Thank you,” she said. “It’s not too late. We can still do this. I love you so much.”
She pulled Orion into a tight hug. He licked his trainer’s face.
“You guys!” she called before turning to her other Pokémon.
Miriel and Tunc were sitting next to each other. Tunc was curled up in a ball, while Miriel looked really exhausted. The shadow’s second attack had come down on the little Budew’s entire body. Phoebe pressed a hand to her throat. It was still tender; it would’ve been awful to have that pressure on her entire body. She pulled herself closer to the other two Pokémon. Orion followed but plopped across Phoebe’s legs as soon as she was in place.
“We’re almost done, you three,” she said. “We just have to plant this, and we’re one step closer to saving the planet.” She placed the seed next to Orion’s nose and pulled out a journal and a silver berry. “If you three want to do a little more, we can do this together.”
She opened the journal, which was filled with notes on Pokémon attacks, then held out the berry to Tunc. “Hey, buddy, eat this and learn Rototiller for me. We’ll really make things grow faster. Miriel, when you’re ready, think about refreshing water and making seeds grow, so you could help with Water Sport, and you’ll be showing all the Water types how to do it when we get back to the Homestead and start replanting. Sorry, you have a bit more work than the guys, but I really think you’ll love it when you’re done.”
There was a long pause. Miriel eventually stumbled next to Phoebe and began concentrating. Little drops of water rolled across the top of Miriel’s body, then a stream. Her smile grew stronger.
Tunc, stared at the berry for a long time before finally eating it. He concentrated on digging deep into this dead earth and making it something. A part of him didn’t believe it’d be that good, but it’d have to be better. He spun in a ball. His armored back tore at the earth and sent it flying. It felt a little better as Rototiller went over more of the land that it already touched. He stopped and shook the dirt out—although for once he felt like having wasteland dirt stuck between his metal plates wasn’t the worst thing, or that uncomfortable really, then dug a new hole next to Phoebe.
When he was done he looked up to see Miriel splash a fully formed Water Sport onto Phoebe’s head. Phoebe nudged Orion off of her lap and picked up the seed. She tickled Tunc’s chin.
“Good job,” she said. “Sit back, it’s me, Orion, and Miriel next.”
She dropped the seed, and Orion began pushing the dirt back into the hole and patting it down. The Sneasel was naturally approaching it with the attitude of one building with snow instead of an experienced digger, as he packed it down a bit roughly at points. When he stepped back there was already bits of bright green grass growing, but Miriel still sent up a Water Sport to help the plants along. Grass grew faster and faster, and she already felt better seeing the grass grow and began dancing around as she used more Water Sports. The grass spread out further and further. Light blue flowers were popping up in the grass. Here and there a small branch like plant would slowly sprout as it steadily turned into a young sapling. When the patch of grass expanding from their seed bumped into another trainer’s field, more flowers of different colors would spring up. First a bigger variety of blues and some pastel pinks and yellows, but in waves from where the newly grown plant life from different seeds met new flowers and saplings burst out of the ground with even more variety. A field with what would eventually have groves of trees sprung out from a dull and lifeless wasteland.
The four looked on in awe, feeling at peace. Orion was the first one to move away from the sight. He turned and dug into Phoebe’s bag. He fished out Pokéballs one by one and pushed the button open allowing Phoebe’s other Pokémon out. “You have to see this,” he squealed both to Pokémon he was close to and Pokémon that he rarely interacted with. In turn, each one grunted and gasped.
Phoebe turned around. “Good idea,” she said. She pulled out Pokéballs and began sending out Pokémon. “Come on out! Look at this! Come and play! But don’t wander off too far now, I can’t move very much!” She gestured casually to the ankle she twisted in Tunc’s first hole during the shadow attack.
When the sky grew dark and the rest of the Pokémon returned from their games, Phoebe, Tunc, Orion, and Miriel were asleep in the soft grass. A few of the older Pokémon kept the younger ones away, the bruises from the shadow’s attack were now very obvious on Miriel’s body and the others’ necks. In spite of what happened to the first four, everyone felt as if the world would be made right and full of life again.
And that there was no red crescent moon waiting in the shadows.
