Description
Hermione twitched her whiskers in irritation as she watched Merlin. Her teammate had just evolved and enjoyed being a Milotic more than he had a Feebas. The Water type was sitting coiled in a fountain, examining his new serpentine body. He was covered in much smoother and more colorful scales than he had before. Violette and Arthur weren’t evolved either, Hermione mused, but they were powerful fighters and were representing Maris in the legendary battles in Lenx. Hermione’s whiskers drooped.

She scampered to the fountain.

“Merlin,” she said. “Are you getting vain now?”

The Milotic blushed and jerked his head around to look at Hermione.

“I’m thinking about the possibilities,” he said. “This is so different from being a Feebas. There is so much I can do now.”

He shook his colorful tail and sent water splashing out of the fountain.

A man walking with Maris laughed and said, “Looks like that Milotic of yours is excited.”
“Merlin is really happy he evolved,” said Maris.

Hermione looked at the man, annoyed. He’d helped Maris teach her, Merlin, and Violette new attacks and gave Maris the item that let Merlin evolve. Hermione wondered if she could evolve. She’d seen larger Electric types, maybe she could be one of them.

Maris stopped in front of the fountain and looked at the two Pokémon.

“We’re going to practice dueling,” she said. “I need you two come here with us.” She pointed to a field surrounded by straw dummies. Other trainers had Pokémon attacking the dummies.

Hermione jumped to Maris’s shoulder and nuzzled her trainer’s cheek with her nose. Maris gave her a pat on the head and smiled.

Merlin sighed as he uncoiled his body and wiggled along after them. Evolution hadn’t made him more comfortable on the ground.

The man happily clapped one worn dummy on the shoulder. “Fifty years of war and wrath, and this one is still in one piece,” he said. Smith gestured to a slightly singed part in the center. “It even took a Hyper Beam from a Dragonite. You go ahead and have one of your Pokémon take a shot at it Miss Mab.”

Maris nodded and turned to Merlin. “Do you feel like any new attacks are coming to you?” she asked. She placed a hand on his head.

Hermione frowned, jumped to the ground, and chattered in frustration.
“Have you forgotten me?” asked Hermione.

She was on all fours, her stance relatively low and feet spread like she was practicing with Violette. She bared her teeth and felt sparks flow around her whiskers.

“Hermione,” said Maris. “You want to fight?”

The Dedenne nodded and waited for an order.

“Merlin, we’ll all train later,” said Maris as she stepped forward. “Now, Hermione, Thunder Shock!”
The Dedenne’s tail shot up, and her fur rose. Electricity sparked from her tail to nose then gathered in both of her cheeks. Two bolts of electricity flew forward and combined in the air between Hermione and the dummy. The single stronger bolt struck the dummy. Hermione studied the dummy. She didn’t see a mark. She climbed closer to the dummy. There was a faint mark. Did she do that? She sniffed it. It didn’t really smell like something that was hit with lightning. Hermione scowled.

“That’s good,” said Maris. The trainer lifted the little rodent up and cradled her. “It’s nice to know you’re ready to battle, if the need comes.”

“She’s an eager one,” said the man.

“What next?”

“That’s it. You passed.”

“It was so simple.”

“If you want, you can duel another trainer. It will be longer, and you can test your Pokémon’s limits more.”

“I don’t think now is the time.”

Both trainers looked at the smoke streaked sky in the north.
