Territoriality Level:
Other members of the species) Moderate
Rival predator species) High
Typical Behavior: The Nobleman is considered to be a fairly docile dragon, so long as it is left alone. When in no state of distress, this species is comparable in behavior to that of an alpaca. Vigilant and calm. They spend their day to day lives grazing, foraging, and caring for their young. When tension is high, and they become agitated, it is normal for adult individuals to behave in a territorial and aggressive manner. They will 'yawn' as a means of showing off their teeth, which is a common act of intimidation among beasts. Males are prone to kicking up clouds of dust and tearing grass as a display of ownership. When a male does this, it is their means of stating that they are in charge. By claiming ownership, they enforce their dominance over all who reside on their land. Such behavior is also a means of challenging rival members of its species.
Females take a different approach should they become agitated. They are prone to making loud noises. High pitched hisses, angry snarls, screams - numerous sounds are made in order to frighten or intimidate the enemy. On top of that, the females will slam their tails into the floor, or surrounding objects. Large numbers of trees have been severely damaged, or destroyed, as a result of these displays. Should a full blown fight break out, a family will be broken into two groups. The main group will stay aboveground to fight, and the secondary unit will coax all young into the burrow. The adults in the second unit will only be forced to fight should the main group fail to keep the assailants at bay. Fights between rival clans of Nobleman are long, and gorey. Males and Females attack relentlessly, striking with intent to kill.
Should the defending family win, any killed enemies will be dragged to the edge of the burrow and turned into a source of food. Any assailiants who managed to escape will have suffered dire wounds, and if hirt badly enough, will die as a result. The victorious family will be free to live, and fight, another day. Loss of an invasive fight will result in the deaths of all adult members of a clan who fail to escape. The same will apply to the young, unless victorious adults of the rival family decide to keep them around as mates. In the case of juveniles, failure to escape alongside family members can result in death, or being claimed as a partner. Any killed enemies will be used as a food source, while fallen allies are left alone. Violent as these creatures can seem, they do mourn their dead.
As such, any captured and claimed juveniles will suffer dearly, because they will be forced to dine on their dead relatives. Nobleman mate for life. So, should a captured individual fail to escape prior to being forced into breeding, then they will never leave. They will essentially become prisoners to their loyal nature, despite bitter feelings. Be they a Polyamorous breed or not, they will remain at the side of their mates. Females are known to actively breed with up to three males within their clan. They will remain faithful to all of them simply by staying within the territory for life. Albeit, the more bitter members can - and will - kill their own offspring as an act of defiance. A brutal stance from those whom had endured the most horrid of fates.
Body Description: The Nobleman is a nice sized dragon which bears a coating of thick fur and soft quills on its body. The hair is thinnest and shorted around the face, near the feet, on the fingers on each wing, and along the length of the tail. Round and pointed spines grow along the center most line of the body, trailing from the back of the head, down to the tail. These spines, like one-third (1/3) of the hairs in the body, become hard and rigid in response to threats. These spines and specialized barbs stiffen as a result of minerals being fed into them. Adrenaline, and other chemicals produced come high stress situations, is what triggers this rush of mineral deposits to the hollow spines. The dragon has complete control over each individual hair, ensuring that allies cannot be accidentally harmed. The result of these changes more or less ensures that the Nobleman becomes the dragon equivalent of a porcupine.
This species is a Wyvern in terms of body type. Meaning that the Noblemans' forelimbs act as wings. Each wing sports two finger like appendages, which are used primarily for travel. This species - like many Wyvern class dragons - can and will travel on all fours by evenly balancing its weight on the main joints of its wings. As such, the forelimbs will sometimes be used as legs, and sometimes be used as wings. The forelimbs themselves, like the rest of the body, are coated with fur. As such, the bones that support the wing are carefully hidden beneath thick elastic skin, and dense hair. In blunt appearance, the Nobleman is fairly bland looking. It sports mouse-like face with Whiskers along the muzzle and brow. The ears are large and rounded to catch minute sounds, while the eyes are of moderate size.
Long neck, body, and tail. Sturdy hind legs, each sporting three toes. The fur hides the nails on these toes, but cannot conceal the spur that grows just above each foot. The tail is roughly one and a half times the length of the body, making it the longest and most maneuverable part of the dragon. The tail ends with a specialized club formed from mineral deposits. Essentially the Noblemans tail ends with a stone club sporting numerous spikes. Others might describe it as a mace tail. Fur color and pattern tends to vary between individuals. The most frequent colors portrayed being white, gray, black, brown, red, and yellow. Eye colors are limited to brown, green, blue, and red. Brown and green eye colors being common, blue being the result of exotic genetics, and red being an indicator of higher power bloodlines.
Correct Terms:
Male) Buck
Female) Doe
Offspring) Fawn
Gender Ratio:
Male) Forty-Five percent (45%) population estimate
Female) Fifty-Five percent (55%) population estimate
Gender Differences: As a whole, female Noblemen are larger and more muscular than males. Standing taller, measuring longer, and holding higher levels of strength than Bucks, the Does are typically the ones in charge.
Age of Sexual Maturity:
Male) Four and a half (4 1/2) years of age
Female) Six (6) years of age
Breeding Season: Early Winter
Mate Type: Polyamorous
Seasonal/Lifelong: Lifelong
Breeding information: Adult Noblemen enter their fertile cycle come the start of every winter. Females will go into heat so long as they are of a breedable age, and they will mate with any trusted male deemed suitable of giving them offspring. However, be for a female will mate, she must be aware that there is a sace place to tend to her young. Eager males will provide her with the material needed to build nests. A smart female will dig a moderately sized hole in the ground, which will be up to six inches deep in order to prevent future hatchlings from escaping. The diameter of the hole will be big enough around for the female to comfortably lie in. Males who seek to court an unclaimed female will provide her with leaves, animal fur, sticks, and anything else that might make suitable material in terms of nest building.
The male that manages to earn the affections of the female will be given the permission to mate - and the responsibility to help care for their young. Once the nest is built, the female will mate. Come the approach of her time to birth her offspring, she will refuse to leave the nest. In which case, she will become entirely dependent on her mate - or mates, if at an older age - for food and water. Labor typically lasts only a few hours, ending once the last newborn has been expelled from the body. Young are born head first, and are wrapped in a thin layer of tissue, which forms a sack around the body. One parent will take responsibility for tearing these birthing sacks in order to prevent offspring from drowning in the amniotic fluid. These sacks are essential for safe birth, as they protect the unborn from harming one another while in the womb.
The sack also helps prevent any damage to mother or offspring come birth. Without these sacks, a breach birth would result in deaths of all unborn offspring, and the mother. Likewise, the sack prevents the bones of the wings from getting caught come birth, removing chance of injury. Young are born virtually hairless, blind, and deaf. The Nobleman is neither a mammal nor a reptile, but is considered to be a mix. The sacks which the young are born in are, in a sense of the word, soft shelled eggs. Umbilical chords connect these eggs to the womb to provide nutrients to the growing fetus', keeping offspring alive during gestation. Placenta will be passed naturally only a few days after a successful birth. The female will eat the placenta, as they contain much needed nutrition. The young typically gain sight and the ability to hear after two weeks.
Egg Laying/Live Birth Species: Live Birth
Typical Egg/Offspring count: Two (2) individuals - max of three (3)
Incubation/Gestation length: Six (6) months
Survival Rate: Sixty-Five percent (65%)
Parental Information: Males and Females care for their young. Mothers produce a high nutrient, fatty milk to spur fast growth. Young are weaned after only three weeks as a result of how effective the milk is at inducing rapid growth. Once weaned, the offspring take to dining on grass, leaves, wild vegetation, grains, fruits, nuts, soil, and small animals. The soil - and consequently small stones - consumed by the individuals become the material used to strengthen their barbs and spines. Both parents watch over their young until they reach breeding age, meaning that females will be cared for longer than males. As far as legitimate care goes, young will be groomed/bathed, fed, protected, and nurtured by their parents. Offspring will venture away to claim territory so that they may form their own family groups.
This behavior brings about a complex network of family groups, which will cooperate with one another in order to obtain food and fight off larger, more dangerous dragon species. Such a complex clan setup is the key means of defending against rival members of the species.
Dietary type: Omnivore
Typical Eating Habits: The Nobleman is a grazer. This species will spend up to six hours of its day eating. Usually they eat in two hour segments, then pause to process their food, and resume their dining. A majority of their diet consists of vegetation and the insects that don't leave their greens in time. When in need of a protein boost, they will hunt and devour smaller animals. These animals typically include snakes, lizards, birds, and rabbits. Larger animals - usually threatening predators - will also be killed and used for food. As such, bears, wolves, and foxes are also a part of the Noblemans diet. Soil and small rocks are also consumed regularly to keep mineral levels within the body stable, given that these minerals are used to hone and strengthen their protective barbs and spines.
Females will live off of half ingested food provided to them by their mates for up to four weeks out of the year during the time when they care for their newborns.
Bloodlines:
Common Bloodline) The most frequently seen of the genetics, Nobleman of the common bloodline sport no special traits. Members of this bloodline are of average strength, and lack any unique abilities. As such, those of the common bloodline are the easiest to defend against, because they lack any above-average skills or abilities.
Hence, the traits of the common bloodline revolve around: Porcupine barbs; average sized stone club on the end of the tail; the 'breath' ability is that of molten soil and fire. The Nobleman produces a lava of sorts after eating rocks or soil, which retains heat for extended periods of time. These lava bursts can be fired up to twenty feet in any direction. When lacking the earthy material, this species produces an intense flame that it can use for short distance attacks.
Exotic Bloodline) The exotic bloodline can be applied to the genetics of both the common and the superior sets. An exotic bloodline is simply a member of the species who holds traits which make them appear and sound unique. An exotically colored Nobleman will hold a voice of a softer, or a deeper pitch, which humans find surprisingly attractive. They also sport a coloration which naturally catches the eye. Exotic Noblemen are considered to be the most beautiful of the species, whether they are of common strengths/skills or not. Their abilities are completely dependant on whether they are a Common-exotic, or a Superior-exotic.
Superior Bloodline) The Superior bloodline - known as the Knighted genetic - is a rare form of Nobleman which holds heightened strength, endurance, and unique abilities. Knighted Noblemen are stronger, can fight for longer periods of time, and can fly for longer periods of time. They can also endure more damage, as they are twice as resiloant as typical members of the species. This makes them extremely powerful warriors in terms of their breed. On top of this, the Knighted Nobleman sports a unique breath ability that others of its species lack: long distance fire. This genetic allows them to produce a condensed flame, which can be fired from the mouth as a thin stream. This flame is shot in short bursts, and can travel up to thirty feet before being extinguished. Hence, this breed can defend itself from a distance.
Fighting Methods: The Nobleman is a violent fighter, taking to acts of lethal force come every brawl. Specialized barbs and spines are a primary defense, with thick skin acting as the secondary means of protecting the body. The spurs on their feet are used to jab an opponent in the face should they draw close enough to bite their hindquarters. Their tail acts as their primary weapon, and is used to bludgeon and puncture the body of an enemy. Strong kicks are used in hopes of breaking bones. Their teeth, which are designed specifically for cutting and chewing, are often used to tear at the face and throat of a threat. Their jaws are strong enough to crush stone, and hence, bones are easy enough to bite through. With a mouth large enough to swallow a human skull, they can easily mangle an enemy with the sheer force of their bite.
Family groups are prone to defeating an enemy by attacking in numbers. They will bite, kick, and tear at any threat with the intention of killing. Their fire can (usually) only be fired a few feet, and hence, must be used at a close range. Their spines and hair will be burned away as a result of the heat, but their skin is specialized. The Nobleman can withstand high levels of heat without becoming dehydrated, or suffering from burns. Hence, it takes repeated bites and blows from the tail to bring about death. Massive blood loss or organ failure are the typical results of death - and are the result of these brutal attacks.
Diurnal/Nocturnal: Diurnal
Home Type: Underground Den(Burrow) + Nest
Sleeping Habits: Adults of this breed requires only six (6) hours of sleep per day, but will gladly sleep for ten (10) or more. Offspring will reguire up to twelve (12) hours of rest per day.
While primarily active during daylight hours, the Nobleman is prone to activity after dark. This is a result in family groups establishing watch units in order to ensure protection. Given that family groups can consist of numerous mating partners, and their offspring, it is important that all can be kept safe. As such, all adult individuals will take turns keeping watch while others sleep. Due to high intelligence, and unique social skills, watch rotations occur every few hours to ensure that all can get required levels of sleep. These rounds repeat nightly, ensuring that all pull their weight in terms of protecting the family.
Known Health Issues: This species is prone to easily dehydration; Eye infections occur frequently as a result of fighting and sleeping habits; Calcium build-up on teeth (a result of diet) can cause gum irritation make eating difficult.
