"I am as God made me - I have no desire...
For a mouth at my breast - Or a pot on the fire...
I heed the higher voices - I go where I'm sent...
To mow down the men who refuse to repent..."
Twisting, the beast dove from the sky to avoid the onslaught of arrows that hurdled towards her body. Her vibrant, ash-white fur caught the light of the fire below her frame, and gave off a silver glow. Closing her eyes she darted downwards, towards the flames. The heat surrounding her threatened to latch on to her frame. It was her speed that kept her body from catching fire...
"I'm a scythe...
In a field full of briars..."
"Keep steady!..." The voice of her companion rang in her mind just loud enough to be heard over the shouts of the surrounding army. How the hybrid woman was able to keep hold of her, she had yet to determine. As it was, she wore no saddle. There was nothing attached to her frame that the hybrid could cling to. That was what made these events so memorial. She, a young and powerful dragon, and the hybrid woman that rode atop the base of her neck. Together they rushed head on into battle. The dragon spewing her mystic, element changing mist to counteract the enemies flames, and the hybrid taking aim with her bow to wipe out all who stepped within their path...
"And they won't call me Mother...
Or Sister...
Or Wife...
They will know me or not - By the strength of my life...
I will burn with a light of my own..."
"Don't lose your bearings!" The dragoness thought as she darted through the flames. Their mental link ensuring that they could communicate with each other despite the chaos around them. The heat was intense. She feared her companion may fall off of her. Seeking to put an end to the fire, she parted her jaws and forced her mystical mist from her frame. The magical gas that rushed out of her maw took on a nearly clear hue, before abruptly solidifying enough to become water. Time and time again she exhaled her element changing mist onto the flames, putting out the fire as she flew through it...
"They'll know me as Joan...
They'll know me as Joan..."
As the fire grew thin around them, she noted the number of barbarians approaching. This was by far the largest army they had gone up against. The dragoness feared that her companion hadn't the magic to produce enough arrows to kill them all. She may need to land and resume the battle on foot. Oh, but that brought about so many risks. If she dared slow, if she dared put her frame on the scorched, barren land, they could restrain her. She was a breed that relied on speed and ambush. If she was captured and bound by ropes, she would be unable to escape without severely damaging herself...
"The courage of Catherine - The flames of the forge...
Sword of Saint Michael - The blood of Saint George...
I take what I'm given...
I follow my truth...
I gladly abandon the bloom of my youth..."
"I know what you're thinking! Don't even try to land!" The voice of her companion rang in her head once more. Ah, at times their mental connection was a blessing - at others, it was a curse. She needn't be given that instruction a second time. The chance of ambush was long gone, but she still had speed on her side. There wasn't a breed of dragon her size that could move faster than her.
"Look for the opening in their formation!... When you find it, you know what to do." She heard the instruction of her companion clear as day. The hybrid riding upon her had grown surprisingly calm. Though, that wasn't a new behavior trait. There was always a moment of calm before the storm. That calm made the storm seem all the more violent, when that first bolt of lightning struck its unsuspecting victim...
"I'm the lashing...
That falls from the scourge..."
"Calm and collected as ever, aren't you, Gohana?" The dragoness thought. Her goal was to make light of their situation. At times it proved to make their battles easier to deal with. A light note of play to the death and destruction going on around them. Being caused by them in their drive to rid the land of evil. The armies of the dark were massive. There were many in alliance with the dark one. Many to slay and fight against. But there were few to combat them - and only one hybrid in existence to work in unison with the dragons she was raised by...
"And they won't call me Mother...
Or Sister...
Or Wife...
They will know me or not - By the strength of my life...
I will burn with a light of my own..."
"You know me well, Joan..." Gohana gave her response as she unleashed her flurry of arrows. The magic taught to her by the dragons gave her a number of skills. Each time she pulled back on her bow-string, fifty arrows of light were released when she let go. The arrows twisted and turned as they flew towards their mark. Every arrow was guaranteed to strike down a follower of the darkness.
"That means you know what I intend to do once we near the camp." She added after a moment. The pained, defeated screams of those she shot down rang loudly in her ears. The wind striking her frame was so strong it remained a strain to keep her body atop the dragon she rode. Everything around her was littered with death and destruction. If they won this battle, then the land would have its chance to heal under the care of the dragons...
"They'll know me as Joan...
They'll know me as Joan..."
"Of course I do... When we reach the camp, you'll shoot the demon that rules over the dark forces of this army." Joan thought as she continued to wind her frame through the chaos. It took time, but she found the flaw in the army's formation. When she did, she followed her instinct from there. After going into as many battles as she had, it didn't take any real effort to act upon what she knew she was supposed to do. She found the flaw, and took advantage of it. This time around, there was to large a gab between the combat units. She darted into the gap, and extended her front legs at both sides. Those standing to close were knocked over by her legs. Those standing far enough, were cut apart by her claws. Most of those she struck down, were unable to get back up. Getting struck by her legs as she flew by, was the same as being stepped on by an elephant, given how fast she was going...
"I fight where God tells me - I never ask why...
I've bloodied the Devil - With steel from on high...
I kill without consequence - Heed no Man's law...
I sift out the righteous like grain from the straw..."
"With the death of the demon, comes the demise of its army." Joan added as she forced her body upwards to avoid the arrows and spears that were hurdled at her. Albeit, speed alone couldn't ensure she wasn't struck. There were arrows and spears embedded in her body. Most of them in her rear legs and her tail, but they were still there. The pain they brought on didn't bother her though. By this point, she was accustomed to the biting sting of an arrow.
"Such is the fate of those who give in to the darkness..." Gohana responded. The calm tone she held was still there, but there was no denying the note of sadness to her thoughts. This was a dark deed they did. Be it for the sake of the land and the innocent, they could do it. But the guilt of having claimed so many lives instead of seeking to free them from their curse, would always remain...
"And they won't call me Mother...
Or Sister...
Or Wife...
They will know me or not - By the strength of my life...
I will burn with a light of my own..."
In time they came across what they were seeking. A dark and foul smelling expanse of land, ridden with death and decay. The home of the demon that commanded the army of barbarians they battled. Joan needn't be given the instruction to fly into that mass of land. The air was foul. The stench of death was so strong that at times, the dragoness was convinced that she may lose consciousness. At times like this, she couldn't help but pity her companion. The air was sickening - and it effected her in ways the dragoness couldn't understand...
"They'll know me as Joan..."
Before long, they found what they were looking for. A huge, black orb that seemed to radiate darkness. Harmless as it seemed, that was the source of all this evil. Demons tended to appear in these forms. Forms that seemed so safe to approach, that humans didn't fear going near them. Joan made sure to keep a safe distance as she soared in a circle around the demon. As inanimate as it seemed, she knew all to well what it was capable of doing. The powers it held would lay dormant until it was attacked. Then, there was chance of them getting seriously injured - even if the first strike destroyed it...
"They won't call me Mother...
Or Sister...
Or Wife...
They will know me or not - By the strength of my life...
I will burn with a light of my own...
They'll know me as Joan..."
Gohana took aim at the black sphere and tugged her bow-string towards her chest. Fifty arrows of light would be released the instant she undid her grip. Both she and the dragon she rode upon could sense the demon preparing to defend itself. Fifty arrows of light would either be an overkill, or massive damage, depending on how powerful the demon was. Either way, it was guaranteed that every arrow would hit their mark. That was the power of dragon magic. The magic that she, as a hybrid, had inherited upon her birth...
"They won't call me Mother...
Or Sister...
Or Wife...
They will know me or not - By the strength of my life...
I will burn with a light of my own...
They'll know me as Joan..."
The calm air about her broke as soon as Gohana released the bow-string. Like the first destructive blow of lightning from a mighty storm, the arrows of light shot towards the demon. The moment the first arrow struck the demons frame, a burst of dark energy sprang from its inanimate frame. The ring of shadow shot outwards in every direction. The blow of it was nearly enough to knock Gohana off of the dragoness. Had Joan not turned her body so that she took a majority of the blow, the hybrid may very well have been killed...
"No they won't call me Mother...
Or Sister...
Or Wife...
They will know me or not - By the strength of my life...
I will burn with a light of my own...
They'll know me as Joan..."
The first shot of fifty hadn't been enough to destroy the demon. Seeking to finish off their foe, Gohana took aim again and pulled the bow-string back.
"Steady... Joan, don't give up now!..." Gohana's thoughts rang in the dragoness's ears. Having taken such a blow, Joan was wounded badly. The injury held strong chance of being fatal if she overexerted herself now. She had to be strong though. Gohana and everything they sought to protect relied on her ensuring the demons demise. Oh, but it was difficult. The dragoness could no longer fly steadily, nor could she move as quickly as she had before. To much energy had been sapped from her by the demons dark magic...
"No they won't call me Mother...
Or Sister...
Or Wife...
They will know me or not - By the strength of my life...
I will burn with a light of my own...
They'll know me as Joan..."
The change in Joan's flying abilities brought about difficulty in Gohana's ability to aim. She struggled to keep her gaze upon the inanimate beast as she prepared to unleash her arrows. The guaranteed strike was only there if she could see what she was aiming at. If she didn't keep her eyes on the demon, then most of the arrows would miss. The moment she locked on to the creature, she released her bow-string. Another assault of arrows struck the demon as it released another wave of dark energy. This time, Joan was unable to keep from crashing. Albeit, she manage to aim her body in a way that had her colliding with the land outside the camp. If she was to die this day, it would not be upon ground laden with death and decay...
"They won't call me Mother...
Or Sister...
Or Wife...
They will know me or not - By the strength of my life...
I will burn with a light of my own...
They'll know me as Joan...
They'll know me as Joan..."
The second assault of arrows was enough to destroy the demon. Joan crashed into the damaged land outside the camp, and fell still. She did not die that day. No, she survived to face many more battles. But the memories of that fight became the essence of her greatest nightmares. The demons death brought on the demise of all its followers. When she fell into an exhaustion fueled slumber after the demons death, it was the pained cries of the fallen dark followers that stayed with her in her sleep. Gohana had fallen off of the wounded dragon during the crash. She emerged from the battle with far lesser wounds than the beast who had fought alongside her.
Seeking to repay her debt, the hybrid refused to leave Joan's side until she awoke. Then she spent her time helping the dragoness recover until she was ready to take to the skies once more. They lived on to fight - and that is what the sought to do as soon as they were able.
