Description
"Beware the glow that comes from the wetlands at night. Be it in the marsh, the swamp - or bordering the sea. If it hails from below the sky, it is not a gentle beast seeking to simply pass you by. It is a hungry creature that seeks to swallow you alive, and while you are still awake. Beware, the Neon Wyrm, for it is a cruel killer."The Neon Wyrm is a breed of wingless dragon that has taken to spending its life in the water. It cannot survive on dry land for long, for it has developed a skin that requires constant moisture. Its short legs are only able to help it drag its frame across the murky floor, and cannot properly support it out of the water. It sports six hearing appendages, each of which have a glowing tip. Its body is decorated with glowing stripes and spots, and a small, glowing sail that runs along the back of the neck, to halfway down the tail. The end of its tail glows, as do its eyes. This dragon is built as if it were a glowing lightshow - the spots and stripes will flash and sparkle, hypnotizing and drawing prey closer. It holds only six teeth, which it relies upon to help it pull food into its gaping maw. Prey is swallowed whole, and while still conscious.
Its body is long, easily reaching up to fourteen feet in length. Built much like a snake in some regards, its stomach is stretched to reach from the back of the throat, all the way down to the creatures pelvis. Lungs, heart, and other small organs are indeed protected by the ribcage - but it is not difficult to pierce this creature in the stomach given its length. However, is had adapted to survive and easily recover from such wounds. Even if prey were to somehow completely tear out of its body from one side, the wound would close over time and it could continue living for a number of years. The glowing markings and the like are bright blue, while its body tends to be pale green and white.
The Neon Wyrm is a specialized hunter, relying on its glowing markings to lure prey in. The creature will then attack, spitting up to a gallon of toxin laced water at its prey. The toxins in the water are quite literally a muscle relaxant. Prey becomes immobile, but remains conscious and able to breathe. After paralyzing its meal, the dragon will then proceed to swallow them whole - usually legs first. This breed of dragon prefers that its food be alive as long as possible during digestion, so it is not unusual for the dragon to physically swallow air in order to allow its victims to breathe while their body is being broken down. It is currently unknown of the swallowed victims are in any pain during this process. Prey that falls unconscious prior to being consumed will be ignored, and the numbing effect of the toxins will dissipate within an hour - in as little as five minutes if partially submerged in water.
Unless it is hungry, the Neon Wyrm is surprisingly passive in nature. It will completely ignore people, and tends to flee an attack rather than turn and fight back. However, if the creature is in need of a meal, a possible attacker will become a definite victim. So, few creatures dare to try and prey upon this beast. Its inability to survive outside of wet areas has not given it much favor as a dragon worth taming, though there are a handful of people who have taken to coaxing them into their land. People that do this already live on wetlands, and would rather have this creature living alongside them and eating other water beasts than resort to alligator or boa hunting. If done corrected, a Neon Wyrm will learn to associate man as an ally - not as food.
This dragon is considered a water/light type.
The Neon Wyrm sprays toxin filled water at prey, and attracts food using its vibrant glow.
This breed of dragon does feed on vegetation, but only for the days following the digestion of a large, meaty meal. Typical prey includes snakes, fish, crocodiles/alligators, small deer, and lost farm animals.
