Description
Mariah awoke six hours later, and being lazy she simply rolled onto her side and looked down to the floor; Sarah still slept curled up like a small animal in the cold. A smile crept onto Mariah's face as she watched her friend sleep, amused at how innocent she appeared to be while reasting. Sarah's wolf like ear twiched slightly in her sleep, and she rolled onto her side; shirt riding up her abdomen exposeing her stomoch. Mariah reached her arm down and poked Sarah in the side, laughing when she jumped up with an animal like yipe. "Mariah! You know I don't like that!" Sarah whimpered, curling into a ball and covering her sides with her arms to keep Mariah from tickleing her. "Your such a crybaby!" Mariah chuckled as she climed out of bed streaching with a yawn. "C'mon. Its time to eat." Mariah muttered walking out the door;Sarah followed shortly after with a small box under her arm as she trotted up to her friends side. "Mariah." Sarah said as she stoped, holding out the small box in both her hands. "Happy birthday!" Sarah giggled, puting the box into Mariahs waiting hands. Mariah opened the box quickly and pulled out the item that was placed inside. "Sarah...This is..." Mariah gasped, gripping the edge of the bone that Sarah had taken the time to carve with her knife. "Yeah, its a skull-face mask. I figured it would b fun to wear while out hunting." Sarah chuckled, taking the mask in her hands and helping Mariah put it on gleefuly.Mariah tryed to reajust the mask that had been placed in an odd position on her face, but Sarah quickly grabed her arm and dragged her twoards the garden. "C'mon! Lets celebrate your birthday!" Sarah cheered while picking strawberries off of the bushes. "Lets make a strawberry pie!" Mariah cheered taking the dark orange fruits from Sarah. Sarah smiled and ran inside while Mariah followed, Sarah quickly took out flour, sugar, vanilla, baking soda, eggs, oil and milk. "I love baking!" Sarah cheered placeing a large mixing bowl on the countertop of her kitchen, putting flour, eggs, oil and milk inside and mixing them thuroly. Mariah took out a smaller bowl and a cutting board; quickly cutting of the grassy tops of the strawberries and placeing them into the bowl to be mashed. Sarah added suger, vanilla and baking soda to the mixture and stiring. "Mariah, you done with the strawberries?" Sarah asked just as Mariah droped the strawberry paste on the counter. "Yes." Mariah laughed while Sarah poured the strawberry mix into the cake batter and mixed it in carefully. Sarah quickly put the batter into two cake pans and placed them into the over, fliping the hourglass that was timed for thirty-five minutes.
"So, what you wanna do for the next half-hour?" Sarah asked lazily, washing the dishes quickly and putting them up to dry. "Lets go take a bath." Mariah said smiling, grabbing Sarah by the arm and draging her out of the house. "We didn't take a bath last nigh. I reek!" Mariah spoke calmly, stoping at the lake and striping off her clothes; folding them gently and setting them down at the waters edge to be picked up by the lesser imps for washing. Mariah steped into the red water of the lake calmly, allowing her tence muscules to be relaxed by its coolness. Sarah walked into the water slowly, inching herself into it inch by inch;Sarah does not like the cold. Both Sarah and Mariah took their time cleaning themselves, enjoying the feel of the water on their skin as they washed away all sence on agitation. "You really love the water dont you Maraih." Sarah stated this fact rather that question it, knowing her friend's enjoyment of the water. "You know what I miss Sarah?" Mariah asked, changing the topic from the water to her question. "What?" Sarah asked as an answer, a light frown appearing on her wet face. "The rain." Mariah stated brusquly, wipeing her face with the back of her hand. "The rain..." Sarah muttered to herself, before diping herself under the water; quickly resurfacing the squeeze the water out of her hair. After the pair finnished washing they dried and put on the clothes that one of the lesser imps leftbehind for them to wear.
Mariah and Sarah went back to their home quickly to check on the cake, seeing that it was done they pulled it out of the oven and placed it on the counter to cool. While the cake cooled Mariah made some lemon flavored iceing and Sarah started to write down some notes; though she did not let Mariah see what she had written. Once cooled, Sarah frosted the cake and put a bowl over the top to prevent it from going stale and left the house saying, "I've got something I need to work on. Have a nice day Mariah!". Mariah took the oportunity to fix her mask, and walked out of her house and hell to have some time to herself. Mariah wandered around aimlessly the entire day, stoping only once to lay in the cool green grace of centril park and take a nap. Mariah awoke at a quarter to ten and quickly put on her mask; she wanted to see if Sarah was out searching for any souls. Mariah quickly made her way to the middle of the city and climed to the top of the nearest building; whistling a small tune in an attempt to contanct her friend. Twenty minutes into the whistling Sarah arived and appologied to Mariah for keeping her waiting.
"Find any corrupt souls?" Mariah asked while climbing down the building, catching Sarah who simply jumped off the roof. "As a mater of fact, I have." Sarah said with a sly smile, griping Mariah by her arm and draging her twoards the Church of Great Saints. "He works as a church official on weekends. Apparently the sick prick likes to put rat poison in the holy water and watch as people slowly die of sickness." Sarah chuckeld, letting go of Mariah's arm and walking into a shadow on the north side of the church. "You should hide Mariah. It's your day off and Jasmin will get mad if she catches you working." Sarah advised, watching Mariah climb up the east side of the curch and siting herself in front of the virgin Mary statue that guarded the green walls of the church. The pair only had to wait a few moments for a man, in his mid thirty's to exit the church; completly unaware of his danger. Mariah simply watched as Sarah followed the man, concealing herself in the shadows as she pursued her prey. Sarah drew a small oddly shaped knife and walked out of she shadows to stand in front of the 'part time preist'. The man did not appear to see the knife; he smiled sweetly and held out his hand in a kind gesture. "What is a pretty young woman like yourself doing wandering around at this sime of night?" The man asked taking a step twoards Sarah who was now smiling viciously.
"And what's a preist doing putting poison in holy water?" Sarah asked sarcasticly, walking twoards the man in short easy steps, pointing her knife in the mans direction while doing so. "I-I don't know what your talking about!" The man gasped, clearly fearing for his life. "Ah, but I think that you do know exactly what I'm talking about." Sarah chuckled, waving her knife side to side as if shuning the man for his actions. "And I think that your going to die here tonight!" Sarah laughed, watching as the man turned to run; quickly finding that he could not outrun Sarah. A short game of tag ensued, Sarah would run out a few yards in front of the man, then watch him turn to run before geting in his way again. Finnaly Sarah grew bored with her game and, while the man was runing she appeard inly inches awat from him and plunged her knife into his chest; the death was quick and painless. Mariah smiled and jumped off of the churches roof, landing silently next to Sarah who was extracting the mans soul; sure enough the mist that Sarah held in her hand was this and black, a true corupted soul. Just as Sarah was about to put the sou in her canester, a bolt of lightning struck her in the side and sent her flying backards into the roar; there before the two creatures of hell, stood an angel. "What the hell was that for?!" Sarah growled angrily, while Mariah helped her to stand up. "This soul is now the property of heaven." The angel stated coldly, the emotion in his tone was cold and heartless. "That's not possible!" Sarah spat, preparing to fight the angel that stood before her.
"That soul is corrupt, so it is the property of hell." Mariah said, trying to keep her voice calm. The angel only smiled with anoyance. "One girl to another, I doubt you could take me on Sarah." She laughed, enjoying Sarah's frustration. "I'll rip your eyes out!" Sarah threatened, allowing Mariah to hold her back. Mariah turned to the angel in front of her and asked "Excuse me miss?" Mariah trailed off, gesturing to the angel that she did not know her name. "Alex." She said cooly, puting the soul into her own canetser. "But just how is it possible for you to take that soul into heaven with you, seeing as how it's so corrupt?" Mariah finnished her question with a gesture to the body only a yard away from them. "Simple. He made a confession to god just before you killed him, and my master has granted him forgiveness." Alex stated, opening her gray wings wide and giving a single flap. "Now if you'll excuse me, I really must be going." Alex chuckled as she went airborn, dissapearing into the night sky in an instant. "Shit!" Mariah growled, finally revealing her frustration. "Jasmin is going to kill us!" Sarah whined, stomping her foot like a four year old who was not given a peice of candy. Mariah and Sarah gave worried glances to eachother, and started their journey back to hell with a grim look plastered on their faces.
The boat ride, which was usualy full of Sarah's playfull teaseing was quiet; nither Sarah of Mariah would say a word to Lauren, who was becoming concerned with their silence. Once they were off of the boat Mariah and Sarah made their way to Jasmin's home, and kneeled before their master patheticly. "Sarah, where is the soul that I sent you after?" Jasmin asked, anger evident in her voice. Sarah took in a deep breath and replyed quickly, her voice shaky from her fear. "I-I don't have it!" Sarah said, pressing her head to the floor of Jasmin's home and squeezing her eyes shut. Jasmin smiled, and glared at the soul stealer that kneeled before her. "Then where is it? I know that you killed the man allready, where could it have gone!" Jasmin yelled out angrily, raising her hand into the air to strike Sarah; Mariah caught Jasmin's hand before she could slap Sarah. "Its not her fault!" Mariah pleaded. "An angel came and stole the soul before Sarah could bring it back to hell!" Jasmin gasped, lowering her hand and kneeling in front of Sarah, who's face was still planted firmly on the ground. "Is this true Sarah?! Did an angel steal that soul from you?!" Jasmin asked hurriedly, lifting Sarah's face off of the floor and holding eye contact with her. "Y-yes." Sarah stuttered, skaking in Jasmin's grasp out of shock. Jasmin stood quickly and closed her eye's, gritting her teeth and turning away from her servants.
"Leave me!" Jasmin ordered harshly, turning to face the two soul stearler abruptly. "Do not go out after more souls of return to my presence untill I tell you to!" Jasmin spat, and both Mariah and Sarah left her home quickly and without hesitation. Mariah led Sarah, who was still in shock, back to their home and sent her to bed; trying to comfort her. Mariah sayed up, and began preparing breakfast unintentionaly. Still feeling a little uneasy, Mariah fed her portion of the food to one of the animals that waited for scraps outside of the house; though they were weary of the food because Sarah usualy fed them. Sarah awoke some time later, and walked into the kitchen; Mariah could see that Sarah's face had gone white and her eyes were glazed over with fear. "I made you an omlete." Mariah said with a forced smile, handing the food to Sarah who simply stared at the omlete as if she had never seen one before. "It'll help you feel better, try to eat some of it." Mariah encouraged Sarah, who took only a few bites of the omlete, then hand fed the rest of the food to a small dragon that sat outside waiting patiently for the scraps. Sarah sat across from Mariah at the table, and rested her head on the wooden surface lazily. A few hours later a knock was heard at the door, Mariah quickly answered and let Audriana, the dark angel enter the house. "Audri?" Sarah asked, looking at the dark angel with worry apparent in her eyes.
Audri glanced at Sarah, then at Mariah and back at Sarah again. "Jasmin want's you to come and see her Sarah." Audri said, holding out her hand to help the shorter girl stand up. "Hold on, let me get a new shirt on..." Mariah said, heading up the stairs. "She doesn't want to see you Mariah, just Sarah. She wants you to take a few days off." Audri said as she led Sarah out of the house and twoards Jasmin's home, keeping her hand on Sarah's back and holding onto her arm to help her stay standing. Mariah simply stood at the window and watched as her friend was led away, leaveing the window when the formes of the two women dissapeared from sight. "Oh Sarah..." Mariah whispered to herself, looking at the mask with a defeated expression on her face. "Just what is Jasmin going to do to you?" Mariah trailed off, and a single tear fell from the corner of her eye as she placed the mask back over her face; she then stood and left the house, leaveing hell for the time being. Mariah wandered around in the state of North Dakota for most of the day, returning to hell at nightfall to find Sarah siting in the windowsill of her room with a slip of paper in her hand. "Sarah?" Mariah asked, watching as Sarah jumped slightly in surprise. "Oh, your back. I was waiting for you." Sarah said smiling happily, standing and puting the paper in her pocket before joging across to room the hug Mariah tightly.
"Sarah...Are you Ok?" Mariah asked worriedly, not liking Sarah's sudden change of character. "I'm find Mariah. Jasmin wasn't mad at all. To be honest she sent me on a solo assighnment." Sarah laughed, rubing her arms with a smile on her face. "Really? She wasn't mad at all?!" Mariah gasped in surprise, noticing how Sarah's eyes seemed to be confused. "Well, not at me." Sarah said quietly, gesturing with her hand for Mariah to lean in close to her face. "But she was totaly pissed off at Maria. She went to heaven to have a little talk with her right before she sent me home." Sarah whispered, not wanting anyone other than Mariah to hear the conversation. Mariah nodded and looked Sarah over, just in case she was lieing about Jasmin not being angry with her. Finding no physical sighn's of an attack she took Sarah by the hand and led her to the kitchen, smiling happily. "Good, now lets have some of this cake we made. It smells really good!" Mariah laughed, pulling out two plates and a couple of forks while Sarah cut two slices out of the cake. The two sat down smiling and ate the cake silently, still slightly conserned about the situation.
