Description
A fun little take on Pokemon variation per some idle suggestions of a friend on Tumblr. These are primarily nocturnal Pokemon who would be referred to as "Fungus rodents", because they thrive akin to mushrooms. The brown markings on the underside and feet is actually caked on soil, which clings to their extremely short fur. They pack nutritious material into this bodily soil, and in times of dire need they can sap this emergency nutrition from the soil to boost their health. In essence these Pokemon have a new ability dubbed as "Failsafe", which means that they can fully restore their HP once in battle after reaching the point of fainting. So these are a pain in the arse Pokemon which would need to be defeated twice. This behavior is what warrants the proof of their Ghost type abilities, given that they effectively bring themselves back from the dead. In the wild they can continue to do this for as long as they are able to apply more nutrition material to the soil glued to their bodies.
The addition being that their tails act more like a modified root, which is used to help them draw in minerals from deep within the earth. These tails also help to control the amount of moisture retained in the body. They will effectively swell when there is to much water inside of them, and then the Pokemon will chew off the water filled lump. It grows back completely by the next day.
The dark markings under the eye help them to see better at night, and prevent them from going blind during the day. They also have shorter teeth than their traditional forms, which are designed to make slicing through bark and roots easier while also allowing them to gingerly pierce the flesh of berries without crushing them.
These Pokemon live above ground in giant nests composed of organic material. Typically leaf litter, sticks, roots, and mud are compacted into a sturdy den around tree trunks. Family groups live together, and as the population grows these nests can connect, eventually covering the forest floor completely. So be wary when stepping into a forest area which appears to have a lumpy, muddy floor sporting dozens of holes.
Rattata evolves into its Raticate form only at night, under the light of a full moon.
