Chapter Four: Work Starts

(Y/N) hummed quietly as she gave the blank, dingy looking walls of the building a look-over. She was about to give the whole building a coating of white paint. Said paint sat in a large bucket beside her. There were actually five more buckets waiting elsewhere in the building to ensure that she didn’t run out and have to start over. Each bucket held ten gallons of paint. While she personally doubted it’d take sixty gallons of paint to prep the interior of the building for her work, it was better safe than sorry. Anything extra could just be given to one of her coworkers. Calmly, she gave herself a final look over to make sure she was set and ready to paint. Her mask was on and she had a pair of safety goggles over her eyes. She was in her painting attire, so no harm if she got paint on herself. Her hair was in order and wouldn’t be getting in the way. She was all set and ready to start painting.

With that, she got to work. Truth be told, painting was a bit of a work out. There were constant up and down motions with her arms. At times she had to put all of her body weight into pushing the roller up the wall. To an onlooker it seemed like easy work, but the reality was far from it. Painting was a strenuous exercise- because it took stamina, patience, and resolve. At around the time she finished tending to the first wall, a semi-familiar face appeared to greet her. In blunt terms that face belonged to none other than a member of the City Counsel. His name was Nickolas Choir. Under normal circumstances, (Y/N) wouldn’t have had any idea as to why Nickolas would suddenly visit her. However, given the conversation she’d had with Meyla only a few days prior, it wasn’t hard to guess that he’d been informed of the little issue revolving around the carnival.

If she hadn’t been so worried about being wrong with her assumption, she would've likely confronted him on why he’d decided to visit her at work. This was a situation where she was better safe than sorry, after all. There was a good chance he’d just been sent to make sure everyone was actively doing their jobs. If that were the case, he was just dropping by to ensure she was pulling her weight to get the job done. She’d be paid based on quality after all. The counsel would likely want to check up on people from time to time. She didn’t say anything when he entered the room, and aside from turning to him when he first stepped inside, she did her best not to pay any attention to him. She continued to work on painting the wall in front of her, and he stood quietly behind her. He watched her while she worked, and she did what she could to keep from getting distracted by him.

“… Has Meyla spoken to you recently?” Nickolas’s voice rang from behind (Y/N), who stopped working for a split second in surprise. However, she immediately resumed working in an attempt to keep herself calm. As it was, Choir seemed to be implying that Meyla had spoken to him about the discovery. Granted, that didn’t mean (Y/N) was about to flat out dwell into it. She wanted to stay safe, and play it cool. In the end, she was better off waiting for him to talk to her about the issue. She’d just give him a little encouragement as they went so he wouldn’t believe she didn’t know what he was talking about.

“.. Yeah. I talked to her a few days ago… Why?” (Y/N) stated in response, ending her phrase with a simple question of her own in hopes of encouraging Nickolas to dwell further into the conversation. She heard the male standing behind her sigh, and for a moment believed he might leave. Instead, he continued.

“She… Brought something fairly, interesting, to light. Something interesting and important.” Nickolas said as he moved slightly closer to the woman he stood behind. She, in turn, stopped working with the paint and turned ever so slightly to peer at him. Still slightly unsure, (Y/N) remained silent so see if the male would state more. She was right to hold her tongue. He cleared his throat awkwardly before throwing out a bit more information.
“Yesterday, Meyla came to me to discuss something she’d discovered while looking into the history of this place. She found out why the carnival had been shut down, and… I must say, it’s not pleasant… She also told me to come and talk to you when I next had the chance. Is it, safe for me to assume that she spoke to you about this as well?” Choir inquired as he examined the woman, whom he now stood beside. With this, (Y/N) deemed it safe to discuss what she knew with the male. Meyla had informed Nickolas of why the carnival had been decommissioned, and had then gone out of her way to point him in her direction. After hearing what he’d told her, she was more than willing to communicate with him.

“Yes. Meyla, informed me, about her discovery… She talked to me about it while taking me to Home Depot to buy paint.” (Y/N) stated as she set her paint roller in the tray, before she retrieved some plastic wrap to cover it. She was still on the job after all, and she wasn’t about to let good paint go to waste just to discuss something with a member of the City Counsel. She still had to portray herself in a professional manner, and she couldn’t afford to leave him with a bad impression of her workmanship.

“… I see. So, you’re aware of what might be found here if we have the carnival reopened too soon?” Nickolas asked as he watched the woman get her work station shut down. Granted, she wasn’t done working for the day, not by a long shot. She just wanted to conserve her supplies. Seeing as she didn’t know how long they’d be talking, it was better safe than sorry.

“Highly aware…” (Y/N) stated as she placed the lid atop the bucket of paint she was using, to keep it from forming a layer of film atop it. Once done, she sighed and moved to stand directly in front of Nickolas, who gave her a pleading look. No doubt he was as worried about the situation as she had been.
“Do you have any idea what we should do?...” She asked in a fairly pleading tone as she looked at the man, who sighed tiredly and rubbed the back of his neck.

“Right now, I don’t have a clue… We need to get everything removed before the carnival opens. We actually need to do so without alerting the other workers. Most of the people in town are highly superstitious, and, I wouldn’t be surprised if people refused to come just because of what happened here…” Nickolas stated in a glum tone as his gaze fell to the ground. With those words, he revealed a number of other difficulties to (Y/N). He was right. At least seventy percent of the people in town were highly superstitious, including at least half of the workers. If any of them found out about the bodies, and what had happened at the carnival, they’d deem the location cursed, quit their work, then spread word around to keep others from setting foot there. That’d ruin the reputation of the carnival before it even had a chance to be opened. On top of that, (Y/N) now realized that other people could access the same records Meyla had discovered while looking into the carnivals history. There was going to be a huge news report, come the time of the grand reopening. If reporters bothered to check up on the place prior to the event, the carnival wouldn’t stand a chance of gaining popularity.

All of which meant that the trio now had a lot more to do to ensure the carnival didn’t meet an unfortunate end. They needed to have the bodies safely removed without anyone superstitious hearing about them. All of the online information either had to be tampered with, or removed entirely to keep the reporters- or anyone else- digging it up. Of course, they’d have to do that without somehow drawing unwanted attention. All in all, the situation was growing more and more complicated with every passing moment. For all she knew, in a few days they’d have to realize something else extremely important that would be difficult to have taken care of in private. Given what they were dealing with, that would probably happen. There wasn’t really a doubt. As if sensing what (Y/N) was thinking, Nickolas sighed and shook his head.

“Considering your expression, can I assume you’ve realized how difficult this is going to be?...” Nickolas asked as he finally locked eyes with the woman, who began to chew on her lip as she slowly nodded her head. Seeing that the woman seemed to be on equal footing with him, the male raised a hand to rub his temples.
“This… Really isn’t the best place to discuss this. You’ve gotten a lot done here, probably more than anyone else on site. I’ll tell your employer you’re done for the day.” Choir said quietly, making it clear with his statement that he intended on taking (Y/N) to a more secluded location to better discuss the situation with her. Granted, the woman wasn’t exactly ready to just be taken from work without explanation. Not from him, but towards her boss. She still had another six hours left to work. She worked ten hours at a time, from nine in the morning to seven o clock at night. She’d managed to get one and a half walls covered in a fresh layer of paint in her four hour time period, but she’d probably have to put another coating or more before she would be ready to start painting the designs on the wall. Given her tight schedule, she couldn’t afford to throw that much time away.

“Mr. Choir, I can’t just leave. I’ve got a lot of work to do here. I’ll lose too much time.” (Y/N) stated boldly, not willing to dump six hours down the drain for sake of discussing something that could probably be talked over later on in the day. In response to this, the male sighed and turned to look at her.

“I’ll come in and help you paint tomorrow. You’ll get twice as much work done to catch up on anything I’ve cost you… Besides, I am a member of the City Counsel. All I have to do is tell your employer I need you for an important side project, and no one will bat an eyelash in concern.” Nickolas stated, before he turned back towards the door and proceeded to leave. For a moment, (Y/N) considered arguing with him, but she soon thought against it. If he was willing to come in and help her catch up on lost work if it meant being able to discuss the matter with her, she really wasn’t in any place to deny him. Sighing, she moved all of her supplies to a corner where they’d be out of the way, and she draped a table cloth over them to keep anything from being disturbed or harmed by the sunlight. Once done, she started towards the door to follow Nickolas wherever he decided to take her. She didn’t know what to expect, but she could hope he had a means of getting things fixed without a scene being made.
