Chapter Six: Moving along

Nickolas was a heck of a lot faster at doing things than (Y/N) or Meyla expected him to be. He managed to get information on the carnival completely changed in only a matter of days. He somehow managed to convince the owner of the carnivals website to let him edit everything. (Y/N) had yet to figure out how he managed to pull off such a feat, but there was still no doubt in the matter of whether or not he pulled it off. Meyla had confirmed that all of the negative information she’d dug up had been changed. Any evidence of the news reports revolving around the missing and dead children were long gone. The story itself had been edited to say that one of the old tents collapsed while people were inside it watching a show, and that three people lost their lives as a result. The edit also stated that after the accident, people were too afraid to return to the carnival, which led to it being shut down due to lack of funding.

All in all, it was a highly believable story given. Even in the current time people would be hesitant to return to a location if an accident occurred, especially if it resulted in someone dying. That being said, Nickolas had managed to successfully remove any online information that could potentially damage the carnivals new reputation. Well, the information on its official page, which was all that mattered. People would be more likely to believe the information on the official history location than on some other site anyways. Either way, a major issue had been swiftly dealt with because of Nickolas’s ability to get things done quickly. To top it all off, he had gone a step further and proceeded to arrange to inform his fellow colleagues about Meyla’s discovery. The arrangement included (Y/N) and Meyla being taken to a meeting with him, where they would present the original content of the website in hopes of getting something done.

Needless to say, the two women were extremely nervous about carrying out the plan. Partially because of the serious trouble they could get in if the counsel members were against their plans. Some of them were known as being extremely stubborn and idealistic. The issue with that was that, idealistically, the bodies had been lost so long the odds of them being accidentally uncovered were zilch. Said members may even dwell on the fact that the construction crew didn’t happen upon anything while they were working. Granted, crew hadn’t exactly torn anything down or done a lot of digging. Surprisingly enough, all of the buildings were up to code stability wise. Stone and brick doesn’t exactly break down as easily as wood and plaster, after all. All that the construction crew really needed to do was get the wiring up to date and set up the tents. The latter of the tasks being so the artists would understand the basic set up of everything.

In the end, it was easier to create a design for something if you knew exactly what you had to work with. Besides, the tents were easy enough to put up and take down. The crew appeared every day to put the tents inside to prevent any unneeded damage. Once the carnival opened though, the tents would be up for weeks at a time without being taken down, so they absolutely had to be secured. Despite all of that though, the pair were extremely anxious. Meyla wasn’t exactly the sociable type, and (Y/N) hadn’t had to go to any meetings where she’d be the center of attention. Not knowing how people would react to the potentially damaging information didn’t help with the situation at all. As it was, they two were waiting outside the meeting room while Nickolas gave those inside a summary of what was going on. He had promised to inform the other counsel members on what the meeting was about.

He had also said he’d do his best to get everyone on board with things before bringing them inside. All they really needed to do was answer any questions they were given on the matter, and hope they didn’t make fools of themselves. Thus far, they’d been sitting in the hall outside the room for just over an hour. They couldn’t exactly hear what Nickolas- or any of them- were talking about, but they could hear the muffled voices from where they sat. Going by the volume, it sounded as if someone were in an argument on the other side of the door. That didn’t do anything to calm the women’s nerves. Not in the slightest. That as it was, when the door abruptly swung open the pair visibly jumped in surprise. Partially because of the unexpected movement, and partly because the door was pretty much slammed against the wall. As was, expected, Nickolas stood in the doorway. He hastily invited them into the room so they could speak.

Still shaken by the abrupt noise, and unnerved by those they’d meet inside the room, the pair stiffly stood before walking towards the door. The room was dead silent when they stepped inside, and the eyes of everyone in there were on them. They counted their blessings that they didn’t snap well under pressure, otherwise one or both of them probably would have had a panic attack. Nickolas led the pair to the center of the room, where he stood patiently beside them as if to offer some form of support. Neither of the women spoke. According to their understanding of the situation, they were just there to answer any questions the counsel members might have had. Seeing as they’d been brought into the room, they could only assume there was at least one question for them to answer. For a few minutes, they stood their in complete silence, before the head of the City Counsel stood to address them.

For a moment, the pair stood silently and stared awkwardly at the male. Charlie Nubbs was his name. A foolish name that seemed to be a cruel joke, but it was his legal name. People often questioned why he never went through the process of getting it changed. (Y/N) could only guess he liked people finding something amusing about him, seeing as he seemed to completely lack the ability to tell a joke. Once he was standing, Nubbs cleared his throat and eyed the women intently.

“… Which of you is Meyla?” Nubbs questioned as his eyes flicked between their faces. At this, the woman being called out seemed to stiffen a bit, and she fidgeted slightly before hesitantly raising her hand a bit.

“I-I am, sir…” Meyla said in a hesitant manner, still clearly distressed by the situation. These people had ties in high places after all. If she- or (Y/N) messed up, they may very well wind up in jail under false claims. Didn’t really matter how or why they were arrested if the police were more worried about having funding cut further. Nubbs, and a few other members of the counsel, seemed to nod a bit in acknowledgement.

“You are the one who first found all of this… Problematic, information, yes?” Nubbs inquired as he eyed the woman, who offered a nervous nod in place of a verbal answer. As it was, that was only a yes or no question. She seemed intent on not speaking unless she absolutely had too. Again, the group of people nodded. Nubbs sat back down and folded his hands in front of himself on the table.
“Just how, pray tell, did you happen across the information you found?” The male questioned upon making himself comfortable, before he felt silent to await an answer. From there, Meyla stood virtually still for a couple of minutes as she thought over how to continue. She was stiff as a board, and clearly uncomfortable with the situation. So was (Y/N), and she wasn’t even being questioned yet. Imagine how awkward she was going to feel come her turn answering strange questions. Eventually, the woman found it within her to tell her story.

“I was, curious as to why the carnival had been abandoned… You see, it’s a hobby of mine to do research on old buildings. I actually have a habit of visiting abandoned homes to see what’s in them… A-anyway- I went online and did some research. It took me a couple of days, but eventually I found a website dedicated to the carnival. I looked into it, and that’s when I found out what had happened...” Meyla stated awkwardly, doing her best not to bite at her lip or fidget like she wanted to do. The situation was very uncomfortable for her, and given how little time Nickolas had given her to prepare for it, she was having a much harder time dealing with it than she would have otherwise. The counsel members sat quietly and listened as she spoke, though they seemed to mutter things to one another from time to time. They were, if anything, discussing the likelihood of her telling the absolute truth. As far as they could be concerned, she was. They didn’t need to know the extra reason she had taken interest in looking up information on the carnival. They wouldn’t believe her anyway. Nubbs cleared his throat to make sure he had everyone’s attention.

“I see… Well, from what Mr. Choir has told me, you told a miss (Y/FN) (Y/LN) about the discovery to enlist her help in the matter. I believe she’s the woman standing right next to you.” Nubbs inquired as he motioned towards (Y/N), who offered a nervous nod. Meyla nodded as well, seeing as she was the one who had actually been questioned. The male seemed to ponder at this before his attention turned to the woman he had yet to question.
“You were informed prior to Mr. Choir, correct? What made you so willing to help?” The man questioned as he eyed (Y/N) intuitively, as if trying to study any thoughts that might be running through her head. The woman bit her lip at this, and seemed to shrug awkwardly.

“The town's desperate for money… Getting the carnival going would do the trick, seeing as it’s stationary and comes with things the everyday fair doesn’t have. Like a cool place to eat that’s out of the sun… The town really needs the tourist money. If something bad happens, then everyone here’ll suffer for it. I mean… A couple months ago I had three neighbors move. People are leaving town because the economy here is so bad.” (Y/N) spoke awkwardly. She rambled a bit, trying to make it clear why she was so willing to try and help Meyla when she had been told of the discovery. All she really did was pointlessly speak about how the town needed money and she knew it, but, that was basically her reason for helping. Well, that and because she really did want to see the carnival up and running again. Nubbs and the other members of the counsel seemed to eye each other as she spoke. They muttered things to each other. Some of them nodded, others shook their head or shrugged. From the looks of them, they didn’t quite like (Y/N)’s response, but they were a stoic group of people. You couldn’t really judge their feelings based on the expressions on their faces. After a few minutes, Nubbs stood and motioned towards the door.

“Ladies, if you would please excuse us for a few minutes. My colleagues and I need to discuss a few things.” Nubbs stated calmly, before he sat back down and waited while the pair of women left the room. Nickolas shut the door behind them, and they were left to their own thoughts while they tried to guess what might happen. Truth be told, the silence was deafening. Yet, they couldn’t bring about the urge to speak. Meyla was too lost in her own thoughts to even consider speaking. She seemed fairly distracted. Her eyes kept darting to the side as if she saw movement, but there was never anything there to see. The brunette fidgeted in her seat and seemed to chew on her lip anxiously. Eventually she just closed her eyes as if to try and calm herself down, but given how she kept squirming in place it was obvious that the attempt was in vain. After what felt like hours to the two anxious women, the door creaked open and Nickolas poked his head out, before waving his hand as a signal for them to go back into the room.

They did so hastily, and once they were in the room they stood awkwardly in the same spot they had when they’d been questioned. Sure enough, everyone in the room had their eyes upon them- but, they didn’t seem cross. There was an odd glint of curiosity in their eyes. Nubbs seemed to sight, before he stood up to lean over the table a bit.

“The counsel and I have, discussed it. We’ve weighed all the options… As is, we’re better off searching only to find nothing. If there really are corpses hidden in the carnival grounds, we need to find them and remove them before anyone can find them.” Nubbs stated in a rather stern voice as he eyes the pair, who visibly relaxed upon hearing they weren’t just going to be cast off. Calmly, the male sat down before pointing at (Y/N).
“You… I looked into your work history. I must say it’s among the best I’ve seen… You know how your coworkers will think. We need to get the police out there to look for the bodies. They’ll know what they’re looking for, but the painters won’t. We need to keep everyone off the grounds while the police do their search… What story should we tell them? We need something to keep them from wanting to enter the carnival.” He inquired as he eyed (Y/N), who furrowed her brows in thought. Surprisingly enough, she didn’t need to think long to know the best course of action. She also didn’t need to hesitate before telling the group of people the thought that came to mind…
