Description I won't get in to specifics about what each and every server here does, but this is deviantART in all it's glory as of two nights ago. In short, the left hand side consists of the file serving and thumbnail serving. The right hand side consists of the databases, web servers, and other misc servers.

The location of our facility is a devious secret. Guarded by a clan of

What the hell would happen if the server died?! ...I'd be dead that's what, but no, seriously?

spyed, not like i want to know the details but I'd appreciate your help on this.

I'm doing this assignment on art group or movement and most likely I choose DA. I've gotten most of the information I want but the hardest to get is the techical side of dA. I want to talk a bit about the technologies used because I know some advanced shit is used here. It would add credits to my assignment if I can highlight how technology plays a major role in dA. So for instance you can give me estimated figures on bandwidth, storage, etc. Nothing precise, it can be off my couple thousands, but just something to go by, u know? I'd REALLY REALLY REALLY appreciate if you can get back to me on this. Note me or something. Thanks.

Well the truth is that's a confidential area of what we do, so it's going to be hard to get information even from me. But if you have some specific questions I'll see which ones I can answer.

You can ask me publically or in a note, the answers would be the same.

Best,

I understand. Thanks atleast for responding and giving some hope for answers.

Question:
Is it possible you can highlight the major web technologies used by deviantART?
On average, what's the amount of bandwidth used? No need to be accurate, just give me an idea.

and since I'm asking...
Where do you, the CEO, see deviantART say 5 years from now?

spyed In reply to depthskins [2006-03-10 18:42:19 +0000 UTC]

mysql, php, javascript, apache web server, and a system we call DIFI.

we serve around 400 mbits per second of images and text.

The potential for deviantART within 5 years is rather limitless. I see us embracing hundreds of additional forms of art work and empowering a massive community of artists far further than we have even today. We'll do this by providing a long list of tools and resources that will aid in the creation, promotion, distribution and sale of art.

Without getting too specific, anything an artist of any kind might want to do on the web is fair game.

Good luck with your project!

Thanks.
This is the design for project: [link]

I hope it's all good for me to use fella. Nothing harms dA in anyway but only aims to give it more exposure.
Thanks for your help and patience.

Is there a current photo of the gear? My rack at home looked a lot like this in 2000 (when the photo was taken), I'm guessing is a much bigger proposition these days...

Looking for any techs/admins in Australia? We have a good timezone (offsets US and EU nicely), and the nature of the DA community strikes me as being well suited to Google-style geographic clustering and caching?

Kudos to you, Jark and Matteo BTW - I'm sure it was tough in the early days, all great things grow from humble beginnings (and maniacal obsession!!)

I usually steer clear of any online community but i'm all like, becoming involved 'n stuff...I don't have work yet so i can't subscribe, but be patient with me and it will happen.
I'm here all the time lately, unless I'm bustin' my hump on the graphics.

Ha! Looks kinda like our old server room...

I especially like the three workstation class machines "rack mounted" by sticking them sideways on a shelf. awesome.

Hey... I can't tell if you do this from the pics, but it's usually a good idea to strap those down with tie downs if they aren't actually rack mounted. Those machines might not be able to actually fall completely off the rack in an earthquake, but if they can slide back and fourth at all, then they could potentially smack the sides durring a shaker and cause some unwanted drama.

But it's prolly not a big deal unless it's mission critical stuff.
