Marrow was always a bit of a disappointment. While he did well in his lessons (His mother would accept no less), he took no joy in them. He hands shook too badly for surgeon's work (Passing out at the sight of blood didn't help either), and a chronic laziness made him more a liability in almost every other high-profile aspect of medical work. Eventually he became little more than a glorified secretary, analyzing and organizing tech brought in by hunters and the desperate- exactly what he wanted.

He has no desire to dip his hands in peoples guts or chase glory. Marrow would prefer a simple life- but with money. When it became clear her son would be no great medic or social climber, his mother grudgingly arranged a marriage into a family that was stable and well-off, but perhaps a little politically stagnate. It was perfect. Marrow had never been one to moon over love or romance- he was not nearly so amateur as that.

Then his sister was abruptly discredited. For a year or so, the once luminous Samovey clan may as well been radioactive. His engagement was severed, and Marrow found himself suddenly saddled with the weight of expectation his sister had carried for him.

Incredibly, he did not crack- but he did start to think, shaking the dust and cobwebs from his mind. He'd never been the fool he pretended to be, but he'd never had need to be otherwise. In an abrupt pivot, Marrow threw himself into his work with a new goal: Becoming a tech hunter. Or, more specifically, amassing enough scrapped technology to buy his sister's way back into proper society.
