Scrounging about in her pocket, Yucca withdrew a now crumpled envelope. “Got a letter for ya.” She wheezed.

“I think that can wait.”

“Not really. It’s from the Hunter’s guild. Said you should read it immediately.”

Hamish helped the girl to her feet. She staggered a bit, and she sounded like she was breathing badly- who wouldn’t after a fall like that? Despite her attempts to look nonchalant, he could tell she was gritting her teeth, and her shoulders had that tense, fragile look that came with trying to hide severe pain.

“I’ll get to it. What were you thinking, jumping from that height?”

Yucca coughed and spat. “I was thinking I could grab that tree and climb down. Ain’t nowhere to land around here.” She brushed his hands away, and took a moment to steady herself. “You should read it now.”

“Why don’t you tell me what it says. Come, you should at least have a lie-down.” He reached out to her again. If he could get her back to the cabins, he was willing to bet she’d pass out on her own, and that would buy him time to high-tail it down to the little village at the base of the mountain and fetch a doctor.

“Didn’t read it. S’not good practice to go readin’ other people’s mail.” She shook him off. It took her a few steps and some painfully deep breaths before she started to move normally again- or at least, for her to start moving in a mostly-convincing facsimile of ‘normal’.

He took a deep breath. “If I read the letter, will you lie down?”

“Sure.”

It had been hastily stamped with wax, and on being crumpled, it had already broken loose. Hamish stuck his finger under the flap and flicked it open.

Marsa has gone rogue. She’s poisoned several people and fled in your direction. If you could cut her off and detain her until we can catch up, it’d be appreciated.

Hamish barely remembered Marsa, and from what little he did remember, she didn’t much seem like the poisoning type. Still, far be it from him to deny a “formal” request. His unpaid debts lay scattered throughout the guild like debris, a thought that bothered him just a bit more than he cared to admit. Along with the letter was a small strip of cloth- presumably for tracking purposes. He pocketed both. “What do you know about Marsa?” He asked.

Yucca’s eyes had closed while he’d studied the letter, her arms folded over her chest as she took shallow breaths, but they snapped open again when he spoke. “Heard she was behind the poison at the party.”

“Hm.” Had the letter not already mentioned it, that would have meant less than nothing to Hamish. Suddenly, he regretted putting off getting his busted radio fixed for so long. “All right. I oughta get Pokey afore I head out, you can rest in my cabin till I get back.”

“Thanks, but I’ll be fine. We can take Scoops down to the plains.”

“Scoops?”

“My linny.”

“Linny aren’t known for taking multiple passengers.” Hamish said incredulously.

“It won’t be far.” She reassured him. “’Sides, I promised I’d take you where you need to go.”

Hamish pinched the bridge of his nose. “You really need to rest. I’ll take the linney on my own and bring him back.”

“Not likely. Scoops doesn’t like when other folks try to drive ‘im. He’ll eat ya before he lets you on his back. I’ll rest once I get you to the plains.”

Hamish let out a protracted sigh. “Do you promise?”

“Cross my heart.” Yucca grinned.
