Description Full view of my everyday carry knifes leather case. Lidded cases or etuis were fashionable for a long time. They offer way more security than normal sheaths and much thinner and lower quality leather can be used for them as they are made of multiple layers. In this case, it's four layers of goat leather. The obvious downside is the much longer time they take to make, but in period, time was not really an expensive resource.
The central motif is Judith with the head of Holofernes. While the theme itself was popular for a while, there's a distinct change in the early 16th century concerning how she's depicted. Earlier, she was always show fully clothed, implying that it was her god who put Holofernes to sleep. Coinciding with the sack of Rome, the religious wars and the disenchantment of large parts of the population, she appears naked more and more often, telling a different story that gives her way more agency.
