Description I’m having fun with these, continueing the series of characters i enjoy. (Takeo & Kaede [link] , Sookie Stackhouse & Bill Compton [link] )

This obviously isn't a loving couple compared to the other drawings, but I figured that Hook and Peter's hatred is so very passionate, it's strong enough to compete

I realize Hook is usually portrayed as a much older man, but it's Peter who thinks Hook is old as he's so frightened of growing up; So in my head Peter sees Hook much older than he really is. So of course Hook is older, but in this drawing I didn't want him to be the old man he's usually portrayed as, instead I aimed for 25-26.

About Hook
"In a word, the handsomest man I have ever seen, though, at the same time, perhaps slightly disgusting". quote J.M.Barrie
In case you do not know, J.M.Barrie wrote Peter pan.

If he does, it would be a coincidence as this illustration was made before rotg came out.

I like to think of Hook as being the age which Peter Pan classifies as being 'a man'... ie. 18. Peter is usually portrayed as a boy of 13-15 yrs old, and to him, the boundary of adulthood would be 18-20. I dont like Hook as an old man, personally. Great ideas though and lovely drawing!

I am simply in awe.
I love your theory of Hook's age, and it is something I completely agree with.
I am obsessed with Peter Pan and it's something I completely admit to. (toooootally have my right arm dedicated to Peter Pan tattoos and related tattoos!)
I mean there's something to said about never growing up, about a boy who takes you away from everything going wrong in your life to somewhere where it doesn't exist. Somewhere where you can fight pirates, feast with "Indians", build epic tree houses and watch Fairies gather.

I think you've captured their relationship beautifully! I mean it's perfect!
And it's so true, their hatred and rivalry is so strong and intense it is on a level with love.
One cannot exist with out the other. They are a cycle similar to the seasons, to life and death, to the setting of the sun and the rising of the moon.

My ranting aside. . . your work is simply exquisite!
I'm so glad to have come across it!!

Hook is an amazing character. You'd think he and Peter would get along better since Pirates do have a very child like side to them, or playful might be the better word. It's the type of adults that want to mess around, pull pranks and generally all around have fun. So it's really interesting that he and Peter don't get along. They both have flaws that you can relate too, it's very good writing

And thanks! I'm glad you enjoy my depiction!
There's a fine line between love and hate, so it makes sense, it both needs a great amount of passion

Hook most definitely is an amazing character!!
And I totally agree! You would think that Peter and the pirates would have a better relationship simply because of that child like side they have. Though Pirates are every child's favorite scourge and bad guy!! Though out of the "bad guy" category they are the most playful and almost carefree in a sense!!

I think that is one of the great things that Barrie did with his writing is that he gave all the characters flaws that anyone reading could really relate to. Some piece of them that they can see in the characters.

And you're ever so right, there is a very very thin line between love and hate simply because both need a great amount of passion to create!!

I've seen this picture so many times and never took the time to read the artist notes. You're actually right about Hook being around 25 and not being as old as everyone pictures him. Barrie doesn't go too far into his transition into becoming a pirate, all he says is that after spending a year at Oxford he just disappears. Usually people when they go to uni, they start at around 19 or 20, that and keep in mind the average life expectancy of a pirate is only about 5 to 6 years after they take off to sea. His age is never given, but it actually makes more sense to have Hook in his mid twenties than to have him in his late thirties like his normally portrayed. So yay for thinking out of the box!

I should read the book again, it's been a real long time. Actually, I think my dad read it to me cause I couldn't read yet myself, that long ago it was

TaranJHook In reply to ssst [2012-10-24 17:06:04 +0000 UTC]

I actually had to go back and see what my original comment was, haha! Peter Pan is one of those book where when you're little you side with Peter, but when you reread it when you're older you're like "Peter's a little turd, I feel bad for Hook." It adds a whole new level when you read it when you're older cuz now you see both sides of the coin. Highly recommended!

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

ssst In reply to TaranJHook [2012-10-24 17:28:18 +0000 UTC]

Exactly right! I do feel much more sympathetic for Hook now that I'm older. Peter forces the "GET OFF MY LAWN" syndrome out of him much earlier than it should

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

TaranJHook In reply to ssst [2012-10-24 17:51:55 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, Peter is definitely the "little annoying kid that EVERYONE has encountered at some point and wants to choke" kind of person.
Just look at Hook in this picture, poor guy looks like he needs a drink, haha
[link]

It's similar to the movies, but the mood is vastly different. There is like no happy at all, everyone's pissed off and annoyed and trying to kill each other, it's great! Almost makes you want to sit out on your front porch with a shot gun because you have a sudden intense hate for small children. haha

ssst In reply to TaranJHook [2012-10-25 10:30:56 +0000 UTC]

Nice!

Well, that it's not as happy, shinny, bubbly doesn't surprise me. I mean, if you take the little mermaid by H.C. Andersen, it's completely different from most re-interpretations and especially Disney's take on it. I read that book a couple of years back for a school project - I felt entirely depressed once I was done with it It's a good story though!

TaranJHook In reply to ssst [2012-10-25 16:32:22 +0000 UTC]

omg Little Mermaid is horribly depressing! I read the original at a Barnes&Noble store and I'm standing there like "did she just die, holy crap!" A lot of these old fairytales have some pretty creepy origins, but at the same time, stories back then were actually meant to scare children and were used as lessons for what NOT to do. Don't talk to strangers, don't go in the woods by yourself, don't eat food if you don't know where it comes from. Basic stuff now, but back then, it was essential for survival. I really want to check out a lot of the original stories. Hunchback of Notre Dame and Alice in Wonderland are on the list.

ssst In reply to TaranJHook [2012-10-25 21:48:28 +0000 UTC]

Yep, good ol' mean stories to scare you shitless right before bedtime. Good times
The hunchback is really sad. And Alice in wonderland is actually three times more psychedelic for reals than the Disney version. But, they are both very good, just as the Little Mermaid and Peter Pan.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

TaranJHook In reply to ssst [2012-10-25 22:05:37 +0000 UTC]

Sweet!! One of my friends had to read Hunchback in her french class (in French) and she said that pretty much EVERYONE wants to sleep with Esmerelda, and then she dies. I remember that being my favourite Disney movie, and for what it was, that was on the dark side. I can't wait to check out Alice in Wonderland, especially if it's weirder than the movies! I remember reading Little White Bird by James Barrie and the way a lot of things were described and worded, I'm like 'whoa, my mind just blew up and such!' That book is crazy interesting. Yay for horrifying children's books!!!

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

ssst In reply to TaranJHook [2012-10-26 01:22:58 +0000 UTC]

Yes, Esmeralda dies and has a lot of love interests. Victor Hugo seems to like tragedy.
I haven't actually read the book, but I've seen the french musical which is intensely close to the book (I am french). It's just all around depressing, but very enticing and just a great story all around

It's been a while since I've read Alice. But unlike Peter, I actually read that one to myself, so it's a little more clear I do remember going "Whaaaa?" on occasion, but in a fun way

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

TaranJHook In reply to ssst [2012-10-26 02:08:54 +0000 UTC]

The weirder the better. Shame people can't write like that anymore, god forbid someone comes out with something original these days. I saw on comcast there was a Hunchbachk of Notre Dame movie from like, the 50's I think (I know it's in black and white), and I've been meaning to watch it, but just haven't really gotten around to it. I'll have to check it out just to see what it's like. I watched this old Jack and the Beanstalk movie from like, 1952, and that was actually pretty funny, I liked it. I can't stand old horror movies, because they're usually not done all that well and WAY to cheesey for me to even enjoy it, but other genre's (especially fantasy stuff) are always pretty timeless.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

ssst In reply to TaranJHook [2012-11-04 14:55:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm sure there's still weird stuff being written, it's just not what gets published and promoted properly. And yes, I think I've seen snippets of that hunchback movie, I remember it being black and white and they did a monstrously good job with the person who acts the hunchback.
I can't stand horror in general, I'm a wuss I think old movies just give this sense of nostalgia. And because they didn't have as many options effect wise and such, it's kind of like 'sometimes less is more'.
