Description It is a custom of our local alternative (read: free) newspaper, the aptly named City Paper, to publish a list of little known important peoples who've died over the past year. For this go round I was a bit disappointed that Nikki Sudden got the only music related obituary in the issue. That's Nikki Sudden of 'Swell Maps' and 'Jacobites' "fame".

2006 was a year when a slew of important artists moved on, Syd Barrett, Arthur Lee, James Brown, and Jackie McLean who is the subject of the drawing above.

Jackie was a personal friend of Charlie Parker in his youth, and later matured into a top shelf saxophonist himself. Despite having a decades worth of solid to classic releases on Blue Note in the late fifties to mid sixties, he remained just as anonymous as the other players on that label.

As for the painting it's gouache and pencil. Who knows? One day I might just get the hang of this paint thing...

I can't fault your logic. Please, allow me to respond in kind.

A. One of the Jazz Musicians in my opinion, have you heard 'Love and Hate'? Phenomenal.
2. Mississippi John Hurt from his '20s sessions. I haven't heard the Taj Mahal, I'll have to track it down. The Clash did it right too (though they called in 'Wrong em Boyo' for some reason).
C. Thank you.
