As the Terran Civil War rages all over the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, the ISS ENTERPRISE arrives in orbit around the Terran planet Alpha Centauri on a classified mission. My story illustrated by www.deviantart.com/jetfreak-7

Captain Christopher Pike, the recent conqueror of the Talarians, has taken his famous ship to this peaceful planet, one of the jewels in the Imperial Terran crown. Alpha Centauri is an 'Imperial' planet, meaning that it is the personal property of the Terran Emperor and is administered by a governor chosen by the Emperor. At the moment the governor of this planet is the youthful Count Basilio Orsini, the son of the powerful Duke Fausto Orsini, the hereditary administer of the city of Rome.

The Count was given this important governorship two years ago by Emperor Philippa Georgiou as sign of her favor for the ancient Orsini family’s early support and continued loyalty. He was considered young at the time, he was thirty-two then and married to the lovely Countess Paola Gracci-Orsini. Basilio, however, turned out to be an able administrator and has done a commendable job.

Since the assassination of Emperor Georgiou, the Senate has been in control of the Empire and they have left Count Orsini in his governorship after he swore alligence to the Senate. At the out break of the war, the planet's defences have been beefed up, some. Because of Alpha Centauri's location close to the Imperial Center, the planet doesn't have orbital weapons platforms or a squadron of ships guarding it. But it does have some nasty orbital weapons satellites that are quite capable of damaging a starship.

As the ENTERPRISE approaches the planet it slows to half impulse and runs with its shields down and weapons off. Not the way any Terran ship wants to approach a planet. Alpha Centauri's security defense scans the ship as it slowly moves closer.

"Sir, we are being scanned from the planet." Lt. Spock reports from his tactical science station.

"Good," Captain Pike responds as he crosses his legs and sits erect in the command chair. "Let them see that we're not a threat."

"Captain Pike, we're recieving a transmission from Planetary Command." Ensign Singh reports from the communication station. "They are sending instructions for us to go into orbit."

Pike smiles slightly. Inside he is relieved to see that Governor Cooper's plan is proceeding well. Alpha Centauri is aware of his ship's mission and they're cooperating.

"Send it over to the helm.." Pike orders. "Take us in Number One.. nice and easy.."

"Aye captain..." Number One replies. "On final approach for standard orbit."

Pike relaxes a little in his chair as the sight of the planet begins to grow larger on ENTERPRISE'S viewscreen.

"Now comes the hard part...." Pike thinks to himself as his ship moves closer to the planet...
