Description This is for my buddy and partner-in-crime Ian. The story behind this piece is fairly nutty (get it, Ian...?) but it's supposed to be fitness models Grace Grimes (the fairy bully) and Charis Nawrocki (squirrelgirl) and their antics during a show.

So cute! Great work on expression and body language! Tells the 'story' very coherently.

I like the tail-pulling motion...maybe less crop on the left of the page to give it more room to breath. It would have also been nice to see the leaf break the contour of the tree trunk. It seems to be recoiling in fear of falling.

The ink work is sharp...love the variance in line weights. Your markers' textures and values really top it all off...depth and volume! KUDOS!

Ah-HA! Compliment sandwich technique! Your crit-fu is strong!

Seriously though, thanks for taking the time to really study the pic. It made me go back and look at it too which doesn't happen very often. I just kinda draw the crap and move on. You're right on both the crop point and the leaf which seems more interested in what's happening above rather than just being a leaf.

I'm glad you dig my ink work on this piece. I suck so bad at inking it's not even a joke. Thanks again for the kind words and for making me take a second better look at this pic.

X infinity....

That first comment just had me laughing till it hurt! Especially how I actually heard it being said in my head!

If you think your work is crap and inking bad...well, it's your work and you see it how you see it and I said how I see it. So now it's up to you whether or not to take those two pov's and further your abilities to strive better (than you think you are).

Take my comments as something to reassure you that you are doing something that pleases somebody...even if it's not you to the degree you wish it to.

I know, I know. Self deprecation is my worst trait but I just don't like being accused of having an ego (which between you, me, and the monitor has only happend a few times and from laughable sources thankfully.) and it's just easier to steal everyone else's thunder in that situation.

Honestly though I look at my work through almost hateful eyes but I really don't know any artist that is 100% satisfied with their work and if they are they're not telling me about it. Even if I really dig something I draw today by tomorrow I see all the things that are wrong with it and it pisses me off because I figure-if I can see the mistakes now why didn't I see them when I drew it in the first place.

It's a sad, vicious cycle but I am grateful that there are people out there in the digital Wired that seem to like what I do even if it's a struggle for me to just let the pieces go and move on. If I kept noodling on them I'd only have one piece in my DA gallery and it would probably be in the Scraps section at that!

Dammit girl...you make me think too much. Who are you? Brain hurts, I gotta go lie down now.

"I figure-if I can see the mistakes now why didn't I see them when I drew it in the first place."

Well, because one: you stepped away from the piece. When you're working on it, you're so involved and have been staring at the same image for hours on end. You're looking at the little things your tweaking and doing...not the whole picture from fresh new eyes. Take breaks away from the room/art, then come back. Flip it upside down...looked at it in a mirror.

These are things to help see anything you may have missed otherwise.

Two: You also noticed things after the fact because you're also growing as an artist. You should be grateful that you can see your mistakes. That means you know what to fix and improve on next time around.

Otherwise....you'd be in the same place you started.

Noodling's okay when you have the time, just for learning's sake, but yes...one must find that happy medium and move on to the next project. Is there growth from piece to piece...for the most part? Then poof! Progress means growth!

HEheheh...

Yeah, I hear you and I do everything you say but I guess it's my being a failed perfectionist that kills me. Plus being under the deadline crunch so much holding down a "day job" and doing the comics gig I sometimes find that I don't have alot of time to just noodle away. I just want to get to a point where I can keep putting out quality work AND still hold down all my gigs.

Maybe one day I'll actually sit back and go, "Yeah, that's the ticket." But until then back to the drawing board as they say.

Thanks for the insightful and supportive comments. I don't hear this very often and it's a nice change of pace. All the praise in the world is very much appreciated and great for instant gratification but it wears off real quick and sometimes (and I don't know if you feel this way as well) you feel like you're just creating in a void especially posting online on sites like this.

Would you really be happy always putting out "Yeah, that's the ticket" work without the challenge of improvement and growth? Growth is based off of something previously inferior. If you always consider your work ' perfect ', where will you end up?

Where you started.

"Thanks for the insightful and supportive comments."

You're very much welcome. I'm very grateful for your substantial responses to them.

"I don't hear this very often and it's a nice change of pace."

I completely agree. The same goes both ways in regards to comments on the art as well as the replies to the comments.

That's cute. Love the tail pull...and the fact that this is a b/w piece. Don't see many of them around, and I love them.

Oh wow, this has some lovely ink-wash style to it--given the humourous/sexy nature of it and the crispness of the grey-wash it's almost Adam Hughes-esque, which is about as high a prise as I can muster. You get better all the time, man!

I'm pretty sure you can, it's not that hard especially since I have no clue what I'm doing just kinda going with the flow and hoping not to mess things up too bad.
