A little Halo commission in it's pencilled stage. Still needs some tweaking but I'll do that in the ink and color stage. Drawn on 11"x14" Strathmore Bristol with an F Lead.Reference for this piece was a must. I don't know how the guys that draw the Halo books handle having to illustrate all the little nooks and crannies of the Spartan armor without going nuts. You must really love you some Halo or the paychecks must be that good.

Y'know as I was drawing this I couldn't help but notice that a lot of the design is really kinda pointless. Just a mish-mash of what I guess the designers felt it should look like once the graphics caught up with the ideas of the game.
It's not bad, just nothing aside from the headgear is really unique. The designs from the most recent games are a bit more interesting and better fleshed out I feel but it's more from the toy designs I've seen than actual gameplay.
The posing is okay but looking at it now I could've pushed the action a lot more in the piece. The Spartan could have his arm drawn back instead of in what appears to be mid-stab and the Arbiter could be leaned back even more to gesture more action and really translate the weight of the Spartan bearing down on him/it. Things to remember for the next one.

Oh I think you did an excellent work for the first try. As you say, the armour is just hell to draw, but you managed it very well. My first try was horrible.

Thanks but you're just being sweet - my inks are horrible! It's such a chore for me and I struggle so much with getting my lineweights down and popping stuff out. I'm trying though and I appreciate the support!

Naw, I am never sweet! I can't even do line weights, the whole concept boggles me and I always mess it up when I try. If you DO struggle with inks, I hope you at least take some encouragement in me saying I have certainly never noticed.

Oh definitely. Not to mention model sheets, maquettes, and actual game footage stills. I think that's pretty obvious and common knowledge when dealing with any character that has a complex design to it.
If you read my comment again you'll realize that what I meant was more along the lines of the repetition of having to draw the Spartans over and over, panel after panel. For that kind of commitment you either have to really love the property or design or the money has to be pretty decent.
As someone who has done plenty of pages of work it's a chore just keeping basic stuff consistent. You throw in something like the Spartan's armor and that's a labor of love.

Somewhat but I had some really great reference shots of the toys and a statue to work from so it was just trying to translate what was there onto what I had laid out on paper. I love a good challenge!
