I remember when I first played the 8-bit incarnation of 'Tactical Espionage Action' on my Nintendo oh so many moons ago! I was but a wee lad astounded by all the bells and whistles that the gameplay contained.Fast forward to the Playstation version and all I kept doing over and over just because it made me laugh and laugh was to find a walking sentry, run ahead of his patrol zone, activate my Cardboard Box and giggle as he walked up...looked at it and spouted my favorite line of the entire MGS series.
"Huh? Just a box."
That's gold, Jerry-GOLD!
Anyway, here's my piece for the unofficial sketch jam thing that ~o-lee-a and I decided to do. This theme was MGS and hopefully we'll do more and more and get more people to jump in and post up.
I finished this early (deadline isn't until this coming Wed) because of two things:
-1. I wanted to do it, plain and simple.
-2. My work schedule for this coming week is crazy and I may not get a chance to pop in here until next weekend so I'm striking early.
No pressure YO-lee, but I still wanna see what the self-professed MGS MegaFan whips up. If you wanna know more about this silly little jam just check the basic details on my journal but above all else, DRAW!!!
Done with brush and watercolors on typing paper. Total time about five minutes...waaaaaaay too long for a "quick sketch!"

Yup, MGS is da bomb! The Raiden preview clips on YouTube from E3 look amazing and that new 'cutting' technique should be fun to play with.
Of course you're talking to a guy that used to just run around and shot stun darts into as many guards as I could for kicks.

Haha! Yeah I have the ringer of Snakes on my phone.
I still have the sound of Snake walking around in the snow, and the alert sounds! All the sound affects are great. I think the box thing is my favorite though. Now its the medal over turned trash can in the newest.

The Codec ping is my text message alert on my phone too! It's funny when it goes of in public because at least one person always asks, "Is that from MGS?"

I mus admit I was never much for Metal Gear but the pic is awesome as hell, man! I quite like the sketchy grittiness of it and how you adapted it to your style whilst keeping the splotchy, sketchy attributes of the Metal Gear art style.

If you look close I sneezed when drawing Snake's nose and the brush made an arch across his beak. Gotta love working with the brush. I was gonna digitally remove it but that would be against the whole point of the jam.

I've never been comfortable enough to work with a brush at all, so even with mistakes, I stand in awe of the brush skills, man!

Dude, it's not that bad once you get over the initial frustration. I never thought I'd ever use a brush to ink since high school and my first feeble attempts but I wrote it off too quickly and now I wish I had stuck with it more. I'm no master by a longshot but getting used to the brush and quills again is so much more fun now that it keeps me going and trying more!

I dunno, man--given my tendency for ultra-detailed stuff, it's kinda hard for me to imagine using something so imprecise as a brush. It works for you, because you can add a certain elegance to your work with it. Me. . .not so much. *L*

You can always mix it up, y'know? Use the brush to spot blacks or for hair and contour strokes and still use the nibs or markers for the finer details.

I use a brush-pen for a more graceful sort of hair detail sometimes, but I don;t have the grace to do things with full brush, I think . . .my line is just not that elegant. *L*

I think the most I've ever paid for a brush is seven bucks. Expensive tools may help here and there but in the end they ain't gonna make you draw any prettier than what you can.
Course I'm a hack so what do I know. I'm sure there's a ba-zillion inkers out there that would hang me up by my nether region for even thinking this way.
But I digress, I don't feel my brushwork is very solid either but we just gotta keep hacking away at it until we get it or we die. No other choices.

Dude, those first two paragraphs sound like a page right out of my memory. I remember when I first saw the original advertised on the back of a comic and how interesting it looked with all of the "gear" that you could get. Then that whole "Just a box" line, wow I totally forgot about that.
