I'm a realist too.
When my friends talk about going to top colleges, I raise an eyebrow and abstain from that.
And then when they complain about getting F's on their finals, I just calmly tell them that they probably just got at least a C.

I take the 'glass half full/empty' example:
Optimistic people see the glass as half full. Pessimistic see the glass as half empty. Me, a realist, sees it either way. If the glass was empty and you filled it half way, then it's half full. If the glass was full and you poured out half the contents, it's half empty. It depends on the situation. That easy... XD

For a time, yes, I was a pessimistic person who didn't think highly of anything. Rather, for a while, I thought quite LOWLY of everything.
Now that I've started to turn my life around, I'm finding that keeping a healthy vision of realistic value, while still retaining some fantastical ideals for my own entertainment, seems to give me more answers than questions. And trust me, that is a good thing.
Unfortunately, because my views are more realistic and critical, people mark me as a killjoy, or an asshole, or some other vulgar words that they think match my personality.
Well, pardon me for realizing obvious flaws in this idea and making note of them as a fair warning before you stupidly try and act them out, I didn't realize helping your case was against the law.

Reality is neither good nor bad -- but a nice mix of the two. Keep things balanced. It's one of the resasons why I hate emos and rose-tinted glasses...
