Description My tribute to the Castle episode Killshot (4x09). This scene was so powerful because at this point Kate Beckett decided to change her life.

Dr. Burke: "Kate, what do you want?"

Kate: "I want to be more...than who I am."

Prismacolor pencils (Premier and Verithin) on A4 Bristol paper. First drawing I finished using Prismacolor \o/ And I used 's tutorial for colouring. Her tutorial is awesome! She is awesome! Go check out her gallery if you haven't yet, you will be mind blown!

This is also my entry for 's contest here [link]

Don't post this anywhere else without my permission. It annoys the hell out of me when people do that. Respect the artist please.

ETA: I've been staring at this for a while now and I like how you can actually see a learning process going on within this drawing (I'm still looking for things I can change, I see some but won't change it). I had never drawn with Prismacolor pencils before this and about halfway through I purchased Verithin pencils for the details. The lowest panel is the one I finished last and on the same day I had finished the background of the first panel. I like the middle one the least because I kind of messed up the skincolour. This turned out better in the last panel but it does make it look as though these two panels don't belong together. Thus concludes my own critique on the drawing, haha!

just so I understand (and I readily admit a lot of dA confuses me)
but if I was to feature this art piece, say, in my journal, to let my watchers know how great I thought your art was, you would be offended?
or am I missing your point completely?
I'd really like to know, because I do features a lot on my profile page and so far, the artists' have liked it

aw thanks for asking. Featuring here on DeviantArt is fine. I'd love that actually! Recently some people just took my art and posted it on sites like tumblr, pinterest etc. and I kind of felt I lost all control. So that is what I meant with not posting it anywhere else The feature thing on DA is more like a thumbnail with a link to this page, so that is fine

This is lovely, Arlene! The first panel is my favorite too. I think it could almost stand on its own. For me, furniture and background is such a pain but you really captured it beautifully, especially the lighting. Looking forward to seeing more as always

thank you! I'm still deciding what to draw next. I'm not even sure if the next one is going to be colour or graphite or even Castle related hahaha! We'll see

This is beautiful. I love the first panel. Wonderful colouring (I really don't have the patience for coloured pencils. Maybe one of these days I will, but not yet, and you do it so wonderfully).

It's actually quicker than graphite I think xD or maybe I find it easier now haha! You should try it it's really fun! I never thought I could work with coloured pencils at all xD

I doubt it will be quicker than my version of graphite (if you look at my pics you can tell I get bored/frustrated when it comes to hair and backgrounds).

That being said, I have decided to try it (I have lineart and am going to spend today trying to figure out colours a bit before I go to work). I have a feeling it's going to be a disaster, but what they hey. My biggest issue with using coloured pencils is that I don't really have a sense of colour so I never have any idea what to use. Graphite is easier...oh, it's not dark enough, let's add some more. Oh, too dark...let's erase some. Straight forward.

haha, oh I know, it takes some getting used to. I kinda messed up a drawing earlier. But I do try out the colour on a separate piece of paper before I use it on the actual drawing. You can erase it a little bit...just not all, which can sometimes be a pain :/

Yes...I just learned that the hard way. My orange pencil suddenly just decided that it didn't like how I was using it. I guess it thought that it wasn't showing through enough and now every time I use it, no matter how lightly I touch the paper, the lines are coming out quite strong. It is really a stuggle to figure out how to dampen those lines without having to recolour everything around it. :/

so far my picture hasn't been the disaster I predicted (it doesn't really look like the person I am trying to draw, but that is kinda par for the course with me). *fingers crossed* Hope that keeps up. I haven't done the hair yet and I am notorious for messing up hair.

Thanks for pointing the way to Crimefish's tutorials. I can't tell you how many times I have read pieces of those in the last two days. (which reminds me. I should probably comment on her tutorials...)

you could try a kneaded eraser to lift the colours a bit to make it lighter. Or use a lighter colour sometimes when there's a harder piece in the pencil lead I try to draw it out on another piece of paper until it draws okay again. I have no idea if this is the case with your pencil, tho :/

the kneaded eraser can't seem to pull it off. I have tried rubbing, dabbing, scraping, nothing is pulling that orange off (but it is pulling off the colours around it). I think I gave up and went over it in brown (and white I think. I mean, there has to be a purpose for white, right?).

I'll definitely try drawing it out on another piece of paper. Maybe that will help (or sharpening it several times...sometimes that works too).

hmmm, one last option is this: [link] I used it with the "It's what makes you extraordinary" drawing

Thank you for all your help. I didn't have any masking tape at home (and I don't know what that other thing is) so I used scotch tape. It didn't really work on the orange but it worked on my other problem area.

Anyways, here is my final result: [link]
(apparently I still have no patience with hair. )

This is just LOVELY. You've paid such attention to the mix of colours, even in the background! I think my favourite is the first panel, because the lighting is spectacular.

It's so flattering and so touching that you used my tutorial. *cries* Most people look at it out of curiosity, and I went into such detail at points that it's a chore to read. It's informative, but impractical. So it's a huge compliment when anyone looks past all that and uses the methods anyway.

I loved working with it! I always get lost when I draw. Having just the blue colours first made a great indication for me where to go dark and where I had to stay with the light colours. Way less confusing

And thank you so much! I love the first panel as well. I freakin' love the ornaments on the table and the table itself. It's my favourite part of the drawing. I should draw furniture more often! xD
