I love these pictures. I get the hate for Zephyr since he does come off like a leech despite his anxiety (the ladies man arrogance didn't help). Personally I think the show should have given him a real reason why he was a recluse like he trained all his life for something but because of changing times or the economy couldn't do it at all (which is something I can personally attest) but then that would probably go against the very meaning of a cutey mark.

Yeah. I think a lot of "adult" viewers felt a little put off by him, since he may have come across as a critical representation of them.
Even if they made him more sympathetic toward the end, he was never the most likable character. And now, in the episode "Sparkle's Seven", it seems they rolled back even that character development.

i really wish fans weren't so hard on this guy, yes he's obnoxious but i get the feeling some of this is a coping mechanism of his, and one which could gradually be dismantled if people, er um ponies, were nicer to him. I say this because my sister is a jerk to me a lot, and doesn't seem to care when she hurts me, and my folks give me a hard time too, so rather than succumb to them and let them steamroll me i act like a jerk, and if they would just stop their constant nitpicking and putdowns and actually give a damn when they hurt me and *gasp* actually apologize, i'd probably be a considerable amount nicer to them than i am

That's rough dude. Do what you have to do, but don't be passive aggressive. It becomes a never-ending spiral of dysfunction. Communication is key.
That being said, Zephyr Breeze wasn't really presented that way. Everyone around him, except maybe Rainbow Dash, was "too nice" to him, and was enabling his obnoxious behavior. He was probably spoiled as a kid, and was never shown discipline.
I think the main reason people "hate" this character is because his flaws strike uncomfortably close to home for many of the millenials in the audience. XD
Not to pick on millenials too much, being one myself. But Zephyr is a cautionary tale for many who may fall into this trap of entitlement and lack of self-criticism.

Yes, I think Zephyr hit a little too close to home for a lot of bronies. XD
Which is part of what made him such an outrageous character, I think.

I never hated Zephyr nearly as much as a lot of the fandom seemed to... mainly because I understood him. I'm well aware of the feeling of not trying to accomplish anything because of the fear of failure, along with the insecurity that goes with it... I imagine that I myself am less obnoxious about my insecurity than Zephyr, but I still couldn't hate him because I sympathized with him and was glad to see his character development.
I even have a working hypothesis as to why he likes Rainbow Dash - she represents success. She doesn't let fear stop her (on the surface, anyway) and is an example of somepony trying and succeeding, and he's partially envious of her, but also awed by her, so this manifests as feelings of attraction - though his teasing of Dash is largely not that serious and is more to hide his insecurity and his personal belief that she'd never love somepony like him.

Excellent post, I agree wholeheartedly and I have to admit I also share some fear of failure and he reminded me of myself at times...
But that didn't make me hate the character, on the contrary, I actually liked the realism of his character; I also liked the good comic relief he pulled off (at least in my view). Not to mention he actually learned and changed at the end (perhaps a bit too quickly, but MLP being an episodic show it's only natural).

I agree with you. I also know what the fear of failure and thus do not wanted to do something. That's why I liked Zephyr so much. And you may be right, his attraction to Rainbow Dash may be related to the fact that she is all that he can not be. He is just too intrusive and it repels her.
Many people do not understand him and do not even try to understand him. Besides, most of the fans see Rainbow Dash with Soarin, and here comes a guy who a little disturbed popular shipping.
Most MLP characters are perfect. Zephyr disturbed this order. He triggered the chaos that even the Discord would not be ashamed of. And that's why I love Zephyr, he is not perfect, he is like .... we.

I wouldn't describe the MLP characters as perfect, they all have their flaws - and at the same time, they work to overcome and mitigate those flaws. I actually like MLP: FiM's handling of that, because the mane characters have their problems but that makes them more human, so to speak. Zephyr does, however, show mostly his negative side in the episode, and doesn't give him much screentime for afterwards when he stops being a burden on his family.
...Also, his teasing of RD probably doesn't help. Although I don't Soarin's the main pony RD is shipped with, so it's more than just the SoarDash shippers who dislike Zephyr for the reason. Soarin's the main stallion she's shipped with, sure... but I think it's more common to ship her with one of the other Mane Six. Of course, I've never cared for seeing Soarin' and Rainbow together. But that's another story...

Yes, but at the end of the episode, Zeohyr regained his faith in himself, finished his studies. I hope to see him in the future in a better way. Perhaps he will continue to live with his parents, but he will no longer be a problem for them.

If I could make a statement so bold, I believe that a lot of fans initially disliked Zephyr because he reminded them of themselves or someone similar. It's one of those times when an episode hits a little too close to home.
Same thing that happened when Amending Fences aired. A lot of fans empathized with Moondancer, (which is one of the main reasons why that episode is often regarded as one of the best). Except in this case, Moondancer was not shown in a negative and undesirable light. The same cannot be said for Zephyr Breeze, who is shown to be obnoxious, unemployed, and extremely intrusive.
I'm not saying that fans are indeed this way, just that they may have felt that way at one point in time or are reminded of someone similar.

That really would not surprise me. I looked at Zephyr and basically thought, "Is he... a Millennial stereotype applied to FiM?" And I did see a bit of myself in him. But I'm not the kind of person who can project their flaws or try and deny them, the things I saw in Zephyr that resembled parts of me, I disliked, but I wasn't going to condemn Zephyr for them any more than I'd already condemned myself. But as I mentioned, I also took hope from his character development - development than some viewers of the show seem to have forgotten... I guess I was (still am, really) the kind of person that episode was aimed towards, and even though Zephyr's behavior is emotionally painful for me to watch, his new leaf by the end (and that song!) makes it all worth it.
Unfortunately it would not surprise me if there were people who reacted as they did due to a certain.. self-loathing.

Those are some deep thoughts. Thank you for sharing. Especially the part about his attraction to Rainbow Dash. ^^
As they say, with understanding comes forgiveness.

Yeah - I understand what it's like to have that burden of self-loathing, though as I mentioned I hope I'm not that obnoxious. I'm more self-depreciating and apologetic - the best traits of Zephyr and the worst traits of Fluttershy. XD But it was one of my favorite episodes of the season because I have some of Zephyr's issues - and the solution is the same.
That's also where my estimation of Zephyr's crush on Rainbow comes from - given that she's my favorite pony despite her arrogance and slight anti-intellectualism (both of which have grown better over time). She is, quite bluntly, an inspiration, a ponysonification of awesomeness, and she makes anything seem possible if you're determined and brave enough.

You know, I think that crush of his started the same way, too! I don't think it's going to lead to anything, though, but I think either Rarity or Twilight could understand his fears of failure really well.
