Description
A portrait of a character of mine in a Heroes Unlimited game (palladium system). She was only in two sessions before the game died, but i spent a lot of time in creation with her - palladium seems to be that way. I rather like her, and hope to be able to use her somewhere else sometime.
She was a french Canadian photo journalist who was down in South America investigating some leads on a drug cartel. She stumbled on the site of a big paramilitary operation around some pyramidal ruins, but she got a little too close and was captured.
Turns out, as well as running drug shipments out of the compound, the site was also being researched by the group for the alien technology embedded in the temple - possibly part of an ancient science vessel which was surveying earth for it's myriad life forms and taking DNA samples. And what better place to do that in but the Amazon?
The paramilitary scientists reverse engineered the technology to manipulate and 'enhance' DNA, and had been running tests with it in hopes of finding a way to improve humans and sell supersoldier technology to the highest bidder. The researchers on the site were tickled to have her. They were running low on test subjects... most of their victims had broken down at the cellular level, had their internal systems shut down, or had gone comatose or insane. But luckily.... they were starting to get the hang of it.
She survived, one of their more successful test subjects, but she escaped before they could dispose of her and try it on people loyal to them. She ended up in deep hibernation hidden aboard a ship bound northward filled with crates of hidden drugs. The Canadian government got a hold of the ship and discovered the illicit shipment... and the stowaway.
After several weeks of keeping her in containment and under watchful eye, they decided that she was sentient, though she had no memory other than some fleeting flashes of torment. Skittish and chock full of feral instincts, they decided that in order to start her back on something of a normal life without releasing her on an unsuspecting public, and possibly get to the bottom of her strange circumstance, they turned her over to a superhero team in Thunder Bay in exchange for extra funding.
The Canadian scientists dubbed her Sphinx because she was a mystery. Or, as Sphinx quoted from Winston Churchill, "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma." Though she's confused as to why she knows that.
