Description
Lately, I've been doodling a lot of these little Les Mis characters. They're a lot of fun and very relaxing to draw, I doubt this will be the only set of these guys I'll post! I already have a list of people I want to draw next. Can you recognise everybody here? Maybe not, this is a bit Nordic countries heavy – and even though each of these drawings was inspired by a certain actor, creating perfect likenesses clearly wasn't my number one priority here... Here's a list, left to right and top to bottom (but feel free to guess before looking and let me know if you guessed anybody right):
Jean Valjean, Tero Harjunniemi, Tampereen Teatteri; Fantine, Thérèse Karlsson, Åbo Svenska Teater
Cosette, Leanne Dobinson, West End; Cosette, Sarah Nedergård, Tampereen Teatteri
Enjolras, Rune Sæter, Åbo Svenska Teater; Enjolras, Michael Maguire, TAC
Éponine, Rosalind James, 25th Ann. Tour; Grantaire, Glenn Daniel Nilsson, Malmö Opera

Oh! I love Rosalind James as Eponine! I hardly ever see her anywhere though. She's my favorite Eponine, I think.

I've never seen her in the role, but she has an amazing voice, so she certainly deserves some fanart!

So cute! And I love the painting style, too. Since I have seen many of your drawings in pen, water color, and colored pencil, It looks a bit fresh to me!

Thanks! It's fun experimenting with different styles a bit. I think the brush I used here looks a bit like oil pastels – so next, I guess I should learn to use the traditional irl oil pastels, then...

I recognised every character except Grantaire (but I don't know the smaller characters that good anyway).
It's interesting to see how different the characters look like depending on the production. I prefer the left Cosette and the right Enjolras but you did great work with each of them.
I really like it and I would be happy to see more

Haha, yeah, I'm sure the Grantaire here is nearly impossible to recognise – the Malmö Opera costume designs were really unique!
But thanks so much! I'm definitely drawing more soon!

You're welcome.
I'm not quite sure, but isn't Grantaire usually portrayed with black or at least dark hair?
I thought he would be another design of Enjolras

Malmö Grantaire had dark hair too, but he wore a blond wig over it. What makes it weird is that he took the blond wig off onstage sometimes! I guess it might be interpreted as Grantaire wanting to be like Enjolras but failing – if the production's Enjolras had been blonde. But since Enjy was brunette too, I really don't know what was the deal with that detail. It was just odd. Then again, the production was full of weird directional choices, so...
But yeah, I've never seen a blonde Grantaire, actually, unless you count the Malmö one – but I don't, since he wore the blonde wig only a part of the time. They all seem to be dark-haired!

Okay, that sounds really weird
Seems as if the director had some very special ideas
That's good to know. It'll help me to recognise Grantaire better if he's always dark-haired

Cute little Rune! You just can't have an other Enjolras...

Thanks!
Yep, there can be only one... Nah, I've seen a couple of performances in the role that I really like, but Rune is still the number one on my list. Speaking of that list, though - I have to admit I drew Michael Maguire here more because I find his performance a bit hilarious, not because I'm a big fan of his Enjolras (though he does have a nice voice)...

Thanks! Yep, I'm a bit in love with that brush. It has a fun look that reminds me of oil pastels a bit. All the fun and none of the frustration and mess! (Or maybe I should just practice with the oil pastels more...)

Yeah, it's a great brush. That's one of the reasons I enjoy digital art: no mess to clean up.

OOOOoooh they all look so great! I really hope you make more! (mainly 'cause there's no Javert here for now
)

Starlene In reply to NoOneWouldListen [2013-11-20 21:34:10 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! I guess I need to add some Javert to my to-draw list! To be honest, I don't much like drawing him because of the dark clothes. Same with Marius. I just like colouring with bright shades way too much! But I think I know one production where dark clothing is not a problem, not even for Javert... We'll see.
Btw, didn't we discuss 1789 the musical with you a while ago? That discussion inspired me to order a bunch of French musical CDs, 1789 of course included, and they just arrived... Loving all of them so far!

NoOneWouldListen In reply to Starlene [2013-11-20 22:18:39 +0000 UTC]
You're welcome! I know what you mean about Javert, I should draw him too for my project but I haven't started here, and mostly because his clothings are not so interesting to draw... and yes Marius... he's always in black, I really try to draw him but he just looks like a black spot for now. I'll be waiting to see how you'll draw them!
Yes we talked about 1789! My DVD haven't arrived yet... I'm so happy you like them! 1789 is the one I know better (and I don't even really know the ending ), but I have the DVD of Romeo et Juliette too. (and... well I only know a little about Mozart L'Opera Rock. I don't know much more
) Hope you found interesting plays!

Aw, hope you'll get the DVD soon! I bought, besides 1789, Mamma Mia! in French (I'm something of an ABBA fan – I now own MM! in four different languages...) and a musical about Robin Hood called Robin de Bois. I don't even remember how I found out that Robin de Bois even exists, but after listening to the sneak peeks in Amazon, I got really interested... And I was right, the songs are really nice, I recommend! Hmm, I guess I should buy some DVDs next – I have Romeo et Juliette's cast recording and I quite like it, so I guess it'd be fun to see it, too!

I hope to get it soon too, I can't wait to see it! (it will be a special day)
I like Mamma Mia too, but I didn't knew there was a French cast! About Robin des Bois, I first saw it on Amazon when I was looking for 1789... have to take a look about it too!
Romeo et Juliette is nice... the costume design and the sets on the DVD production I own are not exactly Shakespeare-like, they have a sort of... a steampunk/gothic feeling that turns out very interesting!
But I think the best Romeo and Juliet version I've ever seen (the play, not the musical) was here in Portugal, on Sintra (I don't know if you've heard about the place) on a garden called Quinta da Regaleira that is from the romantic era, created to look like a gothic medieval fairytale forest (with the caves and balconys and everything). It was at late night and the performance was all over the garden and the several palaces on it, we were invited to follow the actors along little trails of candles on the floor to find the next stage and scene!
(but if you are afraid of getting lost in a forest only hearing the owls and the wind it might be a little scary I think the illusion of danger is part of the experience
)

Starlene In reply to NoOneWouldListen [2013-11-21 18:42:26 +0000 UTC]
Wow, that sounds pretty much like the perfect setting for Romeo and Juliet... Definitely a unique experience, I'm sure! I've never heard about any other production of any play done in a similar manner.
Heh, the getting afraid part reminds me of a guided tour at Turku castle, a medieval castly here in my home town... It was called Horror Tour and was held at night. Mostly, it was just spooky stories. But at one point, they had an executioner with a huge axe jump out of the shadows and scare the whole group. I screamed lots (right into the ear of a lady I did not know that happened to be standing next to me...) and was pretty terrified of dark a few weeks afterwards – so I think after that, seeing theatre in a forest would just be relaxing!

NoOneWouldListen In reply to Starlene [2013-11-21 19:10:32 +0000 UTC]
Well yes, it wasn't that scary! I would have screamed a lot too! the scariest part on the play was when we were following the path to the masked ball stage, and suddently Mercutio and his friends appear from the middle of the trees laughing a lot and scaring everybody
but it was funny because they were running along with us, like if we were part of the play
You can see the garden here, but it looks totally different in the night: www.google.pt/search?hl=pt-PT&…
(wow, what a huge link. Sorry!)

If you ever come to Lisbon I really recommend you to visit Sintra... it's very close (like 30 minutes driving) and you can see this garden and other beautiful places there! The entire city seems stoped in time!
