Description A little something I've been slowly sketching on the back of my notebook for the past few months. Not especially impressive, I'm afraid, but maybe neat enough to share with you guys.

Whooooa!  Very, very neat!  I don't know how you manage to be so skilled across such a variety of styles/media.  This looks like it could be an illustration in a children's book -- seriously!

Aw, thanks so much! I guess the ~13 years I took weekly art lessons after school paid off a bit: I've tried lots of different techniques and aren't scared trying out new styles. I'm far from skilled with most of them, though. Maybe I look better than I really am since I only post the stuff that doesn't go horribly wrong here... For example – I just bought some gouache colours, I've never used them before, and I can tell already it's going to be really hard getting them to behave like I'd want them to...

(Also, hey, you're back in my inbox – yay!! )

Yeah!  I don't know what happened, I just wasn't making art like...at ALL for the last half year.  But I'm making an effort to get back in the swing of it now, and even if I don't, I want to be participating in my dA communities again!

Lots of fun to come back and see everything you've been doing, though!  :-D

Aw, not too much, lately!  Wait...that might be a lie.  Hehe!  I'm still living in Madrid, Spain, and in the process of applying for legal residency.  If I get it, then I'll be able to live and work here for three years without having to do any more paperwork, and I can exit and re-enter the country at my leisure...which will FINALLY mean I can travel to other countries in Europe, as I've wanted to for the past 4 years!  (I was too poor for the first year, and not in a good position with legality and paperwork to do it, after that.)  Provided I can save up a little money... I'm excited to see more of the world~!

But that application took forEVER -- I started last spring, and I turned in the final papers halfway through February.  Now I just have to wait for something to come in the mail...and wait...and wait... I don't know when to expect it, though I think I MUST have it by the end of June.  End of April would be nice, though.  Sometime that would let me take a short trip or something.

I haven't been home to see my family and USA friends since the August before last, so it's been a hard year.  I'm really aching to go back and see my parents and brother and sister -- in fact, this past year, both of my siblings had their first children: my brother had a baby girl, and my sister, a baby boy, so I have my first niece and nephew!  I won't get to see them until they're both over a year old, though...    So, it's been a year of ups and downs.  Overall, though, I like living here, I like teaching here, and I'm building up my clients and my teaching reputation bit by bit.

Then I just didn't draw forever.  I think I was depressed, or anxious, or a combination of both, plus I had NO free time.  I started taking a Spanish class at the Official School of Languages, last fall; when I moved here, I didn't know any Spanish, so everything I know now is just from four years of conversation, reading, and trying to teach myself.  The class is a big challenge for me (my grammatical knowledge was so far below my classmates' at the start of the course), and in fall, I was so busy with the residency paperwork that I hardly had time to do my Spanish homework or study.  This year, I've been able to actually do the homework and be a slightly better student, thank goodness.  And it seems like my schedule has cleared up enough for my creative brain to start waking up, again.  I did one decent painting last fall, as a gift for a friend -- one of my best ever, but it was just an island of art in a sea of nothingness.  The last couple of weeks, I've been drawing on those little artist trading cards, mostly pictures of characters in a book I'm writing, but also a few Enjolrati.  That man WILL sneak back in there, you know?  Something about all the possible variations just makes him so compelling to draw!

And, hm...  I've been learning how to knit?  So far, I've made 2 easy scarves, 2 baby blankets with a pretty wavy scalloped pattern, some triangular bandanas, some cup cozies, one very nice lacy scarf for my mom, most of a hat to go with it, and several knit kittens (2 are gifts for my niece and nephew) that still need me to embroider faces on them.  I'm at that point where I need to FINISH MY PROJECTS ALREADY.  Oops!

So, that's the scoop on me!  How about you?  What have you been up to?  How is life?

Keeping my fingers crossed everything'll work out and you'll get to travel soon! There's so much to see all around here, I'm sure you'll have a great time once you get to travel around! (Come to Finland. ;D) Also, hope you'll get to take a trip home sometimes soon... I does sound really tough, not seeing your family for such a long time... Congrats on becoming an aunt x2, though!

And best of luck with your language course! Since you're surrounded by the language all the time, I guess you'll learn it a lot faster than in normal school setting in any case, right? I suppose moving to Sweden for a couple of years would do me some good in that respect. Though, whenever ÅST has a musical in their repertoire, I'm listening to people sing in Swedish all the time – let's say that I can sing half of Les Mis in Swedish, but actual conversation is still impossible for me.

Can't wait to see your art again! Haha, you can really count on Enjolras always being inspiring, I guess... :') A while ago, I did a little countdown of the Enjolrati I drew and published online during last year – it was over 20. Heh... Knitting, though. Sweet! Especially sweet since I find it really difficult myself. We had handicrafts lessons in school – I never got to the hats and faceles kittens stage, I got stuck at the easy scarves level.

As for me, thanks for asking... Hmm. Journalism school and musicals, in a nutshell.

It's been a slightly crazy year, school-wise – lots and lots of journalism assignments to do. Some have been fun, like the one that gave me an excuse to interview the current Finnish Jean Valjean – but others, like the big everyday-life-working-on-a-newspaper simulation we're going to do at the end of the year, just fill me with horror. Oh well, what can you do... I kind of ended up in this school instead of having any burning passion to become a journalist, so sometimes, it's really hard to find motivation and not feel stressed out of my mind. But at least I'm almost 50% done with this school already, so there's hope that I'll survive this alive!

But yeah, when I'm not busy with that, I'm running around the country and some of the neighbouring ones and watching musicals. I figure that as long as I have the chance, I should see everything I can... In February, I saw four different shows in Sweden and Denmark, that was pretty much the vacation of my dreams! What else... Ah! Work-wise, I'm having an internship at a culture event during the summer, I'm going to work in their PR. Pretty exciting!

I somehow like it. It's an unusual interpretation of Elphaba, but I think some colourful clothes look good on her
And I like her face and the hair.
