As a bonus for that drawing, here's Mickey in a power overload. If I'm going to be honest, I was mostly inspired for this idea by MLP, with Twilight's story in 'Cutie Mark Chronicles', or more specifically, Twilight's magic overload. I just like that idea, especially when paired with the concept of a character who seems so weak and powerless, but has powers beyond his appearance or actions. I also referenced it by having Duncan being turned into a houseplant. I suppose in the TDHW universe, that sort of transformation is less permanent than in the traditional HP universe, or the transformation wasn't as permanent because it was a magic outburst, because this is my world, for my fun, and I enjoy it. It's just something I'm doing because I like it, so I don't feel like I need to make it make perfect sense, as long as I'm having fun.This is the reason Mickey wears the helmet. Jay may be more able to use magic, but he's not the more magically powerful of the two. Mickey is. Mickey can't always use his wand well, but he has a lot of magical power... he just can't control it. I'm talking serious magical power, electric currents of magic, glowing and floating type. But the helmet suppresses that magic, for the most part. If he's frightened to an extreme degree, or hurt badly, the overload can overpower the helmet. They found that one out when Duncan decided to mess with them, and... well, do you know how hard it is to figure out how to turn a person back from a houseplant? The answer is; very. So basically, do not take the helmet off, and don't be a dick to Mickey. Or Jay, for that matter, that can end badly too. Mickey is working on figuring out how to use his wand better, since the magical outbursts are caused by built up magical power that overloads, learning how to express the pent up magic would 'fix' it. He still has a low ability to suppress magic, but the helmet does keep it in. If he can work out how to lower the buildup, the helmet will keep the rest of the magic controlled.

Mickey: And how bad our luck is... *the crystal releases and the magic bonks him on the head*.. Owww....
Sky: I can vouch for it; behind Tyler, they end up in the infirmary more often than anyone else.... *suddenly looks apologetic! realizing her choice of words* No offense.
Jay: *shrugs, genuinely not minding* None taken... We know it.
Mickey: *rubbing head* Really know it...
Jasmine: At least you don't try to do things that get you hurt, like Tyler does.
Sugar: Ah'm not forcing it! If it's gonna break, Ah'll just start making it outta the little bits! *struggling to make the crystal 'bend' with new directions*
Shawn: How did he stop the ball without his wand? What did he- How- what?
Jasmine: Calm down, Shawn. Weird isn't bad... Sammy and I hang out with you, for one.
Shawn: Hey!
(His overloaded magic drives react faster to his emotions than his wand can channel it. His wand requires him to focus and think, the overload works on pure primal reactions, like stopping the crystal from hitting him, or transforming a threat into something harmless... It's the randomness and raw power that's the real problem.)

Aden: Sugar, set down your wand and relax, you are forcing it unintentionally. If you try and bend that crystal any more it will shatter. I am not asking for perfection, I am asking for impression. I will be satisfied with a simple circlet.

Sugar: Ah ain't makin it for yah, Ah'm makin it for me!
Sky: You still don't want to break it!
Sugar: Ah'm not going to! Ah got this! *has finished the rough spikes that vaguely resemble a tiara, but looks like she's trying to go further*
Jasmine: Shawn, aren't you supposed to be making something out of that, and not just... staring.
Shawn: *staring intensely at the crystal, eyes wide* Shiiinnnnyyy...
Jasmine: Aand... We lost him.
(And if it shatters, there's no doubt who'll get hit by it. Gravity is a weaker force than theirΒ bad luck.)

Aden: I don't CARE that you plan on wearing it, I CARE about the fact that if or when it shatters, it might KILL someone! {is now glaring heavily} SHAWN! Get to work!

Sugar: How come y'all are so sure it'd kill somebody? Ah'm done anywho, but... Ain't deadly.
Sky: She does have a point.
(Bad luck is powerful. And so would a magical outbreak from being almost stabbed.)

Sky:... Good point. I guess I assumed it would be like normal crystals shattering. You know, mainly that they don't tend to cause anything besides really sharp messes
Sugar: Ah'm done already, anyway. It's done.
Shawn: *looking at his crystal like it's a bomb, nervously making it spike up slightly, clearly rattled by Aden's revalation* Do all shiny things have to come with so much deadly stuff?

Aden: It's... passable, Sugar. And Shawn, that's how angler fish hunt down in the dark of the ocean. Now calm down and make something.

Sugar: *is admiring her tiara in one of the more reflective crystal* Yeah, this is a good look on me.
Shawn: That angler fish comment is not making me feel safer, for the record!

Aden: it's technically not supposed to. Now go step outside and calm down. When you are calm, you may come back in and use magic.

Shawn:... Ok.... *walks out*
Jasmine: You do realize that means Shawn can't come back in ever again, right?
Sky: *giggles*
(Calm and Shawn are antonyms.)

Aden: Good point. Shawn, you take your experiment crystal with you. You can do your assignment out there.

Shawn: *walks back in, looks at Aden and swipes two crystals nonchalantly, exiting afterwards*
Sugar: Ah know that these crystal things are all prettyful, but he's all stupid over them.
Jasmine: *whisper* You're one to talk.
Sky: He kind of reminds me of a packrat...
(Which is his Patronus and TDAnimals form... although... I'm not.... exactly... keen on doing that anymore. I'll tell you if you want. I blocked him. I let it go on way too long.)

Aden: {pulls out a comic and puts his feet on the desk} You all can show me your trinkets any time. {starts reading}

Mickey: *helpfullly* We do have the ball, at least.
Sugar: Ah'm wearing my crown thing already!

Aden: {vanishes the spear} Anyone else?
(I'm suddenly imagining that the sound lessons WILL make Aden throw her out via craptry)

Sky: I'm... Kind of having a hard time. I want to do a trophy, but it's kind of... Expected, and... Harder than expected. *the trophy crystal is small, roughly hewn, and she's struggling to get the handles*
Jasmine: It's the handles. You're trying to carve the circles in. You shoulda made the piece first and grew them out.
Sky: Little late for that....
(She wasn't as heinous as she could have been. I mean, it was terrible, but not Vanilla Ice levels of obnoxious fame and self arrogance with no talent and a terrible rapping voice and whiny voice in general. Damned By Faint Praise, much?)

Sugar: *growl* Did Ah say nuthin' to yah?
Mickey: Eep! *small electrical crackle leaks out of the helmet, fizzling out just barely before it overloaded* I'm sorry! *Jay puts his hand on his shoulder*
Jasmine: *cautiously* Hey, it's alright, little guy. Sugar, stop bugging the little kid.
Sugar: Why? If he got somethin' tah say, he should say it!
(Sugar. Magical overload. Duncan being turned into a fern, that good enough a reason not to bother the kid?)

Aden: Sugar, zip it unless you WANT to be turned into a puddle of thinking goop. At best. {goes over to help comfort Mickey} It's gonna be okay...

Mickey: *the power light on his helmet is still glowing, but he's not overloading it yet* I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to, I wasn't... *the thing glows brighter* Oh, I just made it worse, I am so bad at- *it's clearly about to burst, but Jay puts his hand on his shoulder*
Jay: Mickey, Mickey, it's ok, you didn't do anything wrong! You're fine! Sugar's not gonna hurt you, you're not gonna hurt her, nothing's going to happen... *whispering* ok, Sugar might, but... not gonna push it...
Sugar: He ain't gonna explode is he-*Jasmine covers her mouth*
Jasmine: Not helping.
(It's really hard when apologizing for it makes you more panicked so you apologize again and it gets worse (so much experience with it that it hurts DX). Kinda like Nathaniel, except Nathaniel can't explode into lightning bursts and transform you into a potted plant or worse. That actually might help things, thinking of it that way.)

Jay: Mickey, it's ok, she just... does that, you know that.
Mickey: *trying not to panic more because he can see the helmet's light still glowing* Yeah....
(They're like more physically rather than mentally fragile Nathaniel's XD. I didn't plan for canon coming up with characters like my own, although they handle it mildly better. Also, Jasmine as Garnet is ingrained in your head.)

Statue: {draws sword and holds it upright in a salute, then bows}
(sudden mental picture: Jasmine singing Stronger Than You... dear god it fits!)

Aden: It's crystal. Attack. {Aden conjures another statue, which the first promptly destroys before giving another salute and returning into a gem the size of Aden's palm}

Sugar: *giggling*

Jasmine: He could run away.
Sugar:... Who cares?
Sky: He could try and dig another fort in the hallways. They hated that one.
Jasmine: He once found a new secret passage.
Sky: He could be anywhere by now.

Aden: :eyeroll: {peeks outside corridor to see Shawn pulling a rather good Gollum impression over a diamond} Uh... Shawn? Dude? You okay?

Shawn: *aggressive hissing* It's mine!Β
Sky:... *looks at Jasmine* You have weird taste in boys.
Jasmine: Yeah, he's kind of a weirdo.
Mickey: What's that hissing?

Aden: {looming avatar of DOOM} WHAT WAS THAT, MORTAL? {threatening growl}

Shawn: *makes a small squeaking noise and drops the diamond* M-mine?
Mickey: *both he and Jay jump up in fright, but Mickey's eyes start glowing* Eep! *his magic zaps a nearby desk into a large crystal spire, but his eyes stop glowing and it's the end of it*
Jasmine: I f-forgot he can do that..
Sky: Mickey or Aden?
Jasmine: Both.
(hey, at least he managed to make a large crystal thing with his magic, though involuntary.)

Aden: {GLARE... turns to spire and instantly switches to "impressed teacher" mode} Now that's pretty dang cool!

Jay:... Well, yeah... *Mickey nods as well*

Sugar: Figured yah' blow a gasket.

Aden: This is what Reparo is for, yes? {casts at desk, which fixes itself and pushes the crystal forward a bit}

Jay: *dodges the crystal moving forward barely* Be careful!
Sugar: Ain't Aden's fault yer cursed and such.
Mickey: It's not a curse, just a little before that, actually.
Jasmine: 'Least you got somebody to protect you.
Jay/Mickey: *both, at the same time, confused* Who?
Jasmine: I can't let a couple of little defenseless joeys like you get hurt.
(Just pictured Mickey's helmet emitting a bright pink light around Kitty and the sparks flying turn into hearts if she accidentally makes a cute comment or accidental almost flirting with him.)

Sugar: *butting in* And their freakish like bad luck.
Jasmine: I can't lie, I'm no doctor, and I certainly am not some expert on magic yet... But I'm there for you anyway, ok?... The... luck thing... I'm not sure how to fix that... Maybe Aden might, but I'm just a big strong gal.
Sky: You're more special than that.
Sugar: Sounds like accurate to me.
